90s slimming pills

Hi everyone

In the 90s I went to a private clinic and got some appetite suppressants. They were yellow pills but I forget what they were called. I wasn't overweight but I wanted to go from 10 stone to 9 stone and they worked. I took them for a month and lost a stone which I then kept off for about 30 years.

Now with some menopause weight gain, I am back in the position of wanting to lose a stone that just won't shift. No one is going to prescribe my WLI or anything as I'm not overweight but I want to look a bit better.

Can you still get slimming pills from anywhere like you could in the 90s? This post is just asking for information from anyone who has managed to get something prescribed without being overweight. I'm not looking for responses advising me of risk or judging my approach - just information and I'll be very grateful if anyone can advise.

Thanks

I remember my mum had these for a while.
They were pulled from the market after a few years. They were found to cause serious heart problems and stroke.
You won’t get them these days because they were banned long ago.
Someone will probably be along that knows better but I think they were basically a mild version of amphetamine.

Weren’t they basically amphetamines, aka speed?

FemBotinaManputerWorld · 10/04/2026 11:14

Actually I have just looked it up and they were probably Fen-Phen. They weren’t amphetamines. They worked by affecting seratonin levels.
They were withdrawn from the market because of serious health risks mainly heart and lung problems. They actually killed women who were otherwise young and healthy, so you won’t get anything like this from a doctor anymore.

Yes I think they were probably amphetamines. Maybe Fen-Phen though as that sounds familiar.

Google says you can still get diet pills - diethylpropion? But you need to prove you are overweight.

Thank you for replying

What have you tried so far? Some people are getting WLI if not obese but I think most online pharmacies would baulk at prescribing to someone not overweight.

Since perimenopause I'm doing once a week 24 hour fasts with a change in diet to prioritise protein and fibre (for example, tonight I have a chunky beef chilli which I'll have with a small sprinkle of cheese). Some people on here swear by reducing daily calories but some of the restriction seems pretty severe to me. I already exercise 5-7 days a week. Weight is coming off but for me only the fast helped.

I think it's fair to say what worked up to this age, stops working. That said, a lot of what you're advised to do when on WLI is good advice anyway. Prioritise protein and fibre. Lift weights. But even if you went on WLI, if your eating isn't currently excessive, you might find it doesn't work (they don't work for everyone and some people get quite bad side effects).

God, I can remember going to an “obesity clinic” about 25 years ago. I was a size 10 (5ft 7), not a bit of fat on me. I’d hand over my money and the doctor would give you the pills without so much as taking your blood pressure.

One day I was driving in a 30 mph speed limit area and I was getting really angry with the driver in front for driving so slowly. When I looked at the speedometer I was doing about 45, but it felt like I was crawling! I stopped taking them immediately. Horrible things.

BeSassyBalonz · 13/04/2026 16:17

Is it phentermine? I use it sometimes for weight loss. I think I use weight medics online or slimming clinic. They are pink pills, I take half usually. They are very similar to the 90’s pills as I used them too 😂 x

Sorry not have responded until now. I got caught up with work and family but thanks for all replies.

@Lemonthyme it's definitely true that the same approach has stopped working. I haven't tried fasting but, like you, I exercise most days. I only lose these days weight at 700 calories which is just not sustainable.

@DreamyJade that sounds terrifying. I didn't get any side effects really though.

@BeSassyBalonz can I ask where you get them from? I've seen a clinic online but my BMI is normal so they won't prescribe

Yeah it scares me some of the low calorie counts some people are getting to so that weight loss is prompted. I've been told 100 times on this board that fasting is no more than calorie counting another way but for me it's working in a way reducing every day wasn't.

Have you had your HbA1c checked recently? Also checked for any deficiencies?

thephoebejeebies · 13/04/2026 20:37

no I haven’t. Maybe I will try fasting. If I can summon the willpower!
