Freezing cold after weight loss

I've lost just over 20kg since last January and feel loads better for it. I'm just freezing cold all the time. Apparently that's normal with weight loss (less insulation, metabolism changes) but it's very uncomfortable. I'm literally shivering and covered in goosebumps all day. Does it ever get better?

That's an amazing achievement!

Have you tried wearing thermal layers or the Uniqlo heattech clothing, for trapping in heat?

JohnTheRevelator · 02/04/2026 17:05

I think this is very common after a substantial weight loss. I've lost 7 stone (44 kg) over the last few years and I definitely feel the cold much more than I used to. What I have found odd though is that I am still really affected by very hot weather. I used to think that the reason I was sweltering and feeling so uncomfortable in 30 degrees heat was because of the extra weight I was carrying, but strangely,I am still just as badly affected! Now I don't even have the consolation that when it's 5 degrees, everyone else is shivering but I'm just fine! The worst thing for me is freezing cold feet. My feet seem to be permanently cold from the beginning of November until the end of March nowadays!

SilenceInside · 02/04/2026 17:11

I have just adapted by wearing lots of layers, the M&S thermal range is good for that. I have heated throws, a heated under sheet on my bed. I wear wrist warmers or fingerless gloves, a neck warmer as well as a scarf and so on. I don’t know if it gets better, maybe once you’ve been at a stable weight for a while and no longer in a significant calorie deficit it might improve.

I was happy in the summer though as I didn’t feel the heat at all, even when it was 30 degrees plus,

OneToThree · 02/04/2026 17:18

I only lost 2st but I get so much colder now. I love wearing my long sleeved thermal vest underneath my jumpers and bought fleece lined flared leggings that I wear all the time.

BlueShoeGlue · 02/04/2026 17:27

Also the trick is to try to not let yourself get too cold (if possible!) in the first place as I find it really hard to raise my temperature once I’m really feeling the cold!
thermal vest tucked into trousers makes a difference- my lower back really feels the cold, also I always sit with a heated blanket on my lap in the evenings. I’m only 30 but I feel like an OAP due to being freezing since loosing so much weight.

Owenspannas · 02/04/2026 17:30

I’ve lost 9 stone. I’m permanently freezing. It is however preferable to sweating as soon as I try and move so I’m looking at the positives 😂

I sadly eventually regained when in perimenopause but remember this well.

Just a daft question though, is it worth checking your iron and B12 levels? I was recently diagnosed as having low B12 which can cause low thermogenesis (heat production in your body). So it might be worth supplementing (bear in mind B12 is badly absorbed so a mouth spray or melt version which is directly absorbed works better as does the "gentle" iron apparently.)

Zempy · 02/04/2026 17:31

I lost over five and a half stone last year and I am FREEZING!!! 🥶

PersephonePomegranate · 02/04/2026 17:32

I haven't lost weight, but am fairly lean (BMI of 19.5) and I am often cold. I recommend thermal layers, gloves, pebble hand warmers.

I haven't tried any heated wearable, but am very tempted!

Well done on the weight loss!

Lemonthyme · 02/04/2026 17:33

Also, apparently if you can face it, those whole "cold" exposure things (think Wimm Hoff) apparently work to make your thermogenesis more effective. I have a phobia of being cold after a trauma so I've not been brave enough to try it yet but it can just be finishing your shower with a brief cold burst. It's meant to help and I know that when I was younger, I once swam off the Scottish coast in September. It was bloody freezing but when I got out I felt crazy warm for ages.

LoserWinner · 02/04/2026 17:33

I had the same problem. It hasn’t got any better over time, but I now know to put on extra layers, wear a hat and gloves, sometimes use leg-warmers and woolly socks. And to a certain extent, I’ve got used to it.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 02/04/2026 17:33

I've lost 93kg and am wearing two pairs of woolly alpaca socks and cashmere wristwarmers. I've got a pair of electrically heated socks that I use on those days when my feet refuse to defrost.

mycatwearsahat · 02/04/2026 17:34

Yes I had this when I lost a lot of weight. I had to wear fingerless gloves until mid May.

TheChosenTwo · 02/04/2026 17:36

I’ve always felt the cold but it’s been more pronounced since being on MJ. The only thermals I’ve found that actually keep more core warm are the Uniqlo cashmere thermals, the heat tech and extra heat tech were crap for me, along with Mark’s and sparks ones - no good.
I am a cold water swimmer and can’t relate to the warm glow when I get out, unfortunately it takes me around 4 hours to defrost after a properly cold swim! But it’s amazing for my mental health which is what keeps me going when I’m almost crying at the thought of getting in 😂
At my biggest weight and now at my smallest I’ve always struggled with feeling cold, had my bloods done a few months ago and everything is okay there.

Doggymummar · 02/04/2026 17:37

I've been on wli for three years now and I us3d a heated throw every day 3ven in high Summer. One year I went to Rhodes as it was 40 degrees and I didn't warm up then.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/04/2026 17:44

I’ve lost 2.5 stone and my soft shell jacket I would usually wear in the spring is just not enough.

NotDarkGothicMama · 02/04/2026 19:39

Thanks everyone, sounds like layers and vitamins are the way forward. I got back from the gym am hour ago, nice and warm then. Now I'm sitting around in PJ's, oodie and fluffy slipper boots, absolutely freezing again.

outofofficeagain · 02/04/2026 19:41

Me too! I keep thinking about how nice it’s going to be in the summer though.

NotDarkGothicMama · 02/04/2026 19:59

Won't we just cook faster, like a cool bag vs a military-grade American coolbox?

Yuja · 02/04/2026 20:17

I’ve not lost weight but I am very thin and I am permanently freezing! Not much you can do except wear thermals and invest in a heated blanket

NotDarkGothicMama · 02/04/2026 23:20

I've got a nice warm cat asleep on my lap at the moment. I won't be able to move until he wakes up so I'm enjoying the warmth.

I lost 75kg. I can easily get very cold. What works for me is porridge, never sitting still, swimming in the coldest council pool known to man (well, it feels like it!) and lots of layers. Failing that a hot shower.

mrsmacmc · 02/04/2026 23:50

permanently cold since losing 4.5 stone! Always have my under vest on from Sept - April. Cant walk about without slippers on either now if at home as feet are permanent ice cubes 🥶

Fiddlesticks1 · 05/04/2026 10:31

Lost 5st and forever cold made worse by a hubby who is always warm and doesn’t ever seem to feel the cold. Constant battle over turning on the heating.
fleece pyjamas are a god send as no longer cold in bed. Have to wear socks. Heated blanket, oodie and layers definitely help. Also wear scarves all the time.
School can be a nightmare with door open until all children in so think 20 minutes of freezing- coat, gloves, scarf on for ages.

SparklyBrickViper · 05/04/2026 11:05

Permanently freezing.

It is miserable. Layers make some difference but even 5 mins outside and I have hands turning a funny colour and it feels as if I’m frozen to the bone.
