Stuck at size 12-14 despite daily exercise, are my meals healthy?

I am quite short at about 5ft tall and a bit chubby. I am a few sizes over weight. I should probably be a size 8 or 10 for my height but I am a 12-14 yes I know it could be worse. I exercise daily. I don't cook the most I will do is put a pizza in the oven for example. Are tesco branded vegetable pizzas for 1.75 and tesco cheese and onion quiche's healthy. I have a feeling I am doing something wrong as I am staying the same size. I also treat myself to something chocolatey and icecream once or twice a week.

Cook proper food to start with, weight isn’t everything, you need a good balanced diet for health. Once you have cracked the cooking part you need to ensure you eat less calories than you burn, as simple as that. Recent studies show that types of food do matter and less pizza isn’t the answer! It’s coming into summer so start with salads and lean protein

@ExplodingCarrots most people are sedentary unfortunately so have lower TDEE and for OP at 5ft, will have a lower tdee than a standard height person. But I also agree that too low calories is also not good for health.

At 5ft 3 and 44 with an office job my tdee was only 1800 when I started losing weight at 13st, its now less 1495 at 8st 11lbs! Which means my deficit is less than 1000 to lose 1lbs a week but I'm exhausted on that and lost hair, so now I'm lower weight I've reduced my deficit down eating around 1200-1300 a day. Would love to exercise but I work and commute 11-12hrs a day 5 days a week and also work 1 in 4 Saturdays as contracted overtime as well as study on evenings and weekends so I just don't have time to exercise.

Edited

Those are some long hours. And I admit when I had a long commute I didn't exercise as much. But exercise is SO important to health. Is there anything you can do to change your hours or find a job closer to home? Also one thing I did when I did have long commutes was go for a run before I went home. For one thing I had more motivation at 5pm than 6pm but also I missed the worst of the traffic that way so I gained back a little bit of commuting time. It meant it was only 20 minutes (net) from my day rather than 30 minutes.

Seriously , get lost with this attitude. Pisses me off the amount of times I see this on mumsnet.

You will not be fuelling your body properly eating less than 1000 calories, especially if you’re exercising everyday. You will just be grumpy , tired and more likely to binge .

You need to figure out how many calories you’re burning in a day roughly (there are calculators online) and then set a calorie deficit . For example, my total calorie burn in a day is around 2200 cals so I aim to eat 1700 calories for a deficit of 500cals. I’m losing weight steadily.

I prioritise protein and fibre but don’t think carbs are the devil like some people do on here .

My fitness pal is a good place to start to see what you’re eating . You can’t out exercise a bad diet. It’s 80% diet , 20% exercise.

To add , I’ve lost 6 stone. MJ helped me last year but I’m on my own now and using the same principles (calorie deficit, prioritising protein) and still losing steadily . I workout 4 times a week and do 10k steps a day.

I also don’t lose weight unless I eat less than 1,000 calories despite exercising. I really wish it wasn’t the case but it is for me.

Notsosweetcaroline · 28/03/2026 11:39

I mean this politely but you don’t know if a diet of pizza cheesy quiche, choc and ice cream is healthy> what else do you eat?

I don't personally count calories but what kinds of foods make up your 1000 calories?

Yeah, sorry. You won't lose weight eating pre prepared foods.

I started my weight loss by doing these things:

  1. Download myfitnesspal and log everything I eat and drink. Weigh and measure things to begin with until you get your eye in
  2. Track exercise and eat back 80-90% of the calories so I'm in a small deficit
  3. Prioritise nutrient rich foods. I eat salads, yoghurt/milk, eggs, fish, chicken, fruit and vegetables mostly. I eat carbs in things like bananas, porridge for breakfast, rice or potatoes with dinner. I don't eat crisps or bread as snacks.
  4. I eat takeaway or a ready meal once a week
  5. I make sure I'm eating a minimum of 1500 calories a day. Yes I could lose weight quicker with a bigger deficit but I want to be healthy.

So far I'm 1.5kg down, slow and steady.

My commute is 42 miles so anywhere from 1-2hrs a day. I'm just so tired to go for a run after that long day and eating in a deficit to lose weight. I have nothing left in the tank to give. My sleep is also poor and has been for decades and I have low iron, so energy is at a low point even when taking vitamins and iron.
I asked to drop a day or do extended hours but I was rejected due to very short staffing levels and no I can't work from home because I work in the nhs, we were in every day during covid even when most of the country was on furlough or working from home! Lots of hospitals have closed down so I need to work in a bigger hospital due to my specific role so I can't work closer to home. I could only exercise on a weekend, but sometimes I work Saturdays and if not I need to clean and shop and visit family or spend time with friends. I live alone so during warmer weather I have to work on the garden and cut the grass, and it's only me to do DIY and cook! I am also currently studying for a professional qualification, I've done several in my career but have to if I want to progress and be independent.

Of course you can lose weight eating pre prepared food FFS. This thread is infuriating 🤣 it's a calorie deficit that leads to weight loss

Fupoffyagrasshole · 28/03/2026 15:48

If you aren’t counting the calories then it’s pointless you need to know how many you are eating in a day

some stuff can be a shock

Greek yoghurt, fruit and seeds
chicken or fish and veg

Wowzers. Well can't argue with that, especially if it's 0% proper Greek stuff without flavours as that's packed with protein. Still flummoxed on how it's needing to be so low with such a balanced diet. Loads of research I've read would say that's counter productive but then of course the research is almost always on men not women. I swapped out of eating yogurt for breakfast with fruit and seeds but only because I used to have honey with it and I think that was messing up how satiated I felt and wasn't helping my weight.
