I screwed up-weight gain and approaching 40

I recently sprained my ankle which has been a massive set back for my fitness. I was already struggling to due an unexplained issue with my other leg but then it got so much worse.

In the space of 6 months or so I've gained about 2 and a half stone and I'm now the heaviest I've ever been.

I'm locking in to the diet and exercise although it's not as easy as it once was. I'm aiming for 2x 30 minute cardio sessions, a few weight sessions twice a week and I've upped my daily walking instead of driving now that my ankle is almost fixed. I'm also doing ankle rehab exercises so I'm feeling a bit pushed for time in the gym but I'm trying to switch things around so that I have more time to dedicate to actual cardio and weights and slot the ankle exercises in somewhere else. I can do them at home for the most part anyway.

In the past I've always managed to lose weight with a calorie deficit but I'm 40 in the autumn and I've heard how difficult things are.

Am I going to really struggle now? I've only been focused for a few weeks but I had a couple of setbacks due to a planned weekend away for a special occasion and I had an unplanned McDonald's last night due to an unexpected long drive and needed to eat on the road.

I have no more social occasions now until the end of the month, one night out with a friend so there will be drinks, maybe dinner too. I'm sticking to about 1200 calories for now which I'm actually finding not too bad which is unusual for me but I will be upping them to at least 1300 as I add in more exercise.

Running isn't likely to be happening yet so what I do do won't be burning off a huge amount of calories but I can always drop back down if I find the weight isn't shifting

Am I going to be able to lose this weight with my plan above at the age I am??

Approaching 40 isn’t old at all! And age shouldn’t contribute to weight gain/loss. I think your plan sounds good. I’m the same age and recently lost 2.5 stone. I stick to 1200 calories a day but does go up when I exercise (my Apple Watch works out how much for me). If you can stick to that plan I think you’ll be fine.
