How do you get enough fibre on reduced calories?

I tend to eat two meals a day, brunch and dinner, and cook from scratch but struggle to get 30g fibre a day on 1400/1500 calories. I eat lots of veg and I'm not veggie but only tend to have one slice of high fibre bread a day, and don't really eat cereals apart from a high fibre granola on the odd days I do eat breakfast. I like lentils and beans but get a bit fed up if I have them every day and don't want to add them to meals just for the sake of it. I like nuts but you have to watch the portion size. I know pears are good, but again don't always fancy them. My gut seems absolutely fine on 15-20g fibre a day, have a normal bowel movement at least once a day and I'm not constipated and not hungry. Does it matter that much?

For example today I had for brunch salmon, artichoke hearts and scrambled egg on rye sour dough with tomatoes and cucumbers. Tonight I've having bacon, gnocchi and peas in a creamy tarragon sauce, with tenderstem broccoli on the side, a naturally high protein yogurt and cherries for dessert, and medium conference pear for a snack.

It's only 21g or so of fibre. What else could I add/swap without adding too many more calories? I'd think a handful of nuts but it's only another 1g or so, and I'm already up to 1432 calories as it is.

Thats really interesting

So my TDEE is 1550 cals a day to maintain my weight

Its just over 1k a day to lose 1lb a week

So does that mean 15g a day ok?

Well... I discovered I was eating 55-65g fibre a day, much to my surprise. I do eat vegetables with everything, and aim for the 8/9+ servings a day... I love them and they are wonderfully filling.

But the real surprise was the frozen raspberries/blackcurrants I eat... I was easily eating 15g fibre in just 200g of raspberries!! Blackcurrants aren't much less at 12g or so for the same amount. And I was often eating more. And yes I do eat them every day - such a treat!

There isn’t 15g fibre in 200g raspberries. You def haven’t been eating 60g fibre a day

landlordhell · 22/01/2026 22:13

Raspberries are high (7g per 100g)and chia seeds(34g per 100g) Don’t peel potatoes and sounds like you’re doing well. I have never measure fibre but always eat whole grains and real food. Very regular in the eh toilet dept so I don’t worry.

There around 13-15g in 200g raspberries although I’d never eat that much. I eat a lot of fruit and veg, like 8-9 servings a day every time I’ve checked it’s been over 30g a day.

No, you want circa 30g day

I’d die if I ate that much fibre! What are you trying to achieve?

government guidance is 30g per day.

This is correct.

InfoSecInTheCity · 22/01/2026 22:41

1 cup of peas and 1 cup of broccoli is 14g fibre less than 150 calories, so you’d be half way to your target in 1 meal if you had them as sides or part of a stirfry.

1/2 cup of cooked red lentils is 15g fibre and 170 calories.

But the article I was referencing said 15g fibre for 1k calories, thats what Im eating at the moment?

Ophir · 22/01/2026 22:54

Add some raspberries and blueberries and don’t stress. You’re doing really well

all bran for breakfast is also good,10g fibre and 5 protein for 125 calories

3/4 plate of spinach, or broccoli. A huge amount of lettuce in a salad.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 22/01/2026 23:01

Thanks for the really interesting discussion and thoughts.

I don't think I could eat much more fruit and veg, it was 8.1 portions today on Nutracheck! That's quite a normal day for me too.

At least I hit 30g on days when I have jacket potato and beans, or make a veggie chilli🙂

I’ve been using nutracheck for years and eat raspberries everyday. Where are you getting 15g from?

That would only be a few grams. There really isn’t much fibre in f&v. Of course you should eat it anyway but not for significant portions of fibre

soupyspoon · 22/01/2026 22:46

I don’t believe that article. The advance is standard and worldwide 25-30g per day. Your bowel isn’t linked to the number of calories you eat

bathsmat · 23/01/2026 06:28

Nope

😆

bathsmat · 23/01/2026 06:31

I have no idea why people can’t calculate fibre properly!

AcidicTrifle · 23/01/2026 06:36

I found Fibre One bars were helpful to get in the fibre. 5g of fibre and only 80 calories. I used to have two a day as my snacks (10g). That was alongside fibre gummy supplements (4g), best of both toast for breakfast (5g), a wholemeal pitta for lunch (5g) and either pasta or beans for dinner.

My son loves Crunchy Bran cereal and that’s 10g of fibre per 40g portion I think. It’s definitely the highest fibre cereal we have found, as we were looking for a replacement when it was out of stock and other cereals are pathetic in comparison!

No carbs diet. So all has to come from veg. You have to rethink the eating quite a lot and carb based breakfast is not an option. So personally I skip it. I drink lots of water that has the biggest impact on staying unconstipated.

I have yoghurt, kefir with chia, walnuts and hot blueberries and raspberries. It’s delicious and keeps me full until lunchtime.

somanychristmaslights · 23/01/2026 07:01

Chia seeds in water.

That won’t help with bowel cancer

Eating loads of plants and drinking water absolutely will help prevent bowel cancer.

Itsmetheflamingo · 23/01/2026 07:25

As mentioned before, plants don’t have as much fibre as you think, and you need both soluble and insoluble fibres.
