Just as my title asks, has anyone successfully kept up and lost weight and improved fitness using a walking pad. I got one a year ago and life got in the way. I wonder if it's a gimmick, as boredom will creep in before I start to see results. Before anyone asks, I don't want to walk where I live as I hate it and id never keep it up past wla few weeks.

We keep ours in the lounge so we have no excuse. I use it to make sure I get my steps in daily.

Walking pads although great for fitness and health will no have any meaningful impact on weight. Weight loss is 99% due to diet and being in a calorie deficit. You would have to walk an awful lot of steps for it to have any meaningful impact on your weight. Walking however is a great tool for health.

Not strictly true. You can burn 500 calories a day doing 10k steps. More if you are heavier. You have to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound. So upping your walking by 10k a day could help you lose a pound a week.

Only that doesn’t work unless you track your calories. Exercise improves your core strength (weights) and heart health (cardio like walking) however it will have absolutely no impact on weight unless you watch calories. Yes it’s possible to burn 500 calories doing 10k steps but ONLY if you haven’t accidentally eaten an extra 500 calories that day . Which is very easy to do if not tracking EVERYTHING you put in your mouth.
This is why the WLI are so effective. It’s got bugger all to do with ‘lifestyle changes’ that people bang on about . It’s not magic. It controls blood sugar and therefore you don’t feel hungry . You eat less than you put in. No exercise required.
You can if you so wish live on a diet of junk food because you will only be able to eat a tiny amount. It’s a stupid thing to do because it’s just unhealthy nevertheless you will lose weight. There is no other way to lose weight other than to have a calorie deficit.

You don't have to track everything you eat. My figures were based on an assumption that nothing changes on the diet front since that's what I was replying to. You can lose weight by increasing your exercise and making no changes on the diet front, if you look at the figures I quoted.

Obviously it's a really slow way and the best is to combine exercise with decreased calories but I was responding to a post saying exercise makes almost no difference.

But you will be walking anyway, most people even sedentary ones walk 4000-6000 steps a day so you need to be doing 10,000 on top of that to see a 500 cal deficit. That’s why exercise is so awful for weight loss. You need to do an awful lot of it and you have to actually know how much you’re burning. Most people way over estimate calories burnt through exercise but drastically underestimate calories eaten. Controlling what you eat has been shown to be far superior for weight loss than exercise. However movement is phenomenal for both physical and mental health, including helping you feel fitter which motivates with weight loss etc.

Walking pad is amazing for weight loss!

Ive walked 7 stone off in a year and I know of at least 5 others who have used it to lose weight.

I have an extremely busy life and I can’t do huge step goals like some of my friends but it hasn’t hindered my progress. I aim for 8-10k steps per day.

And yes I do count calories also but my calories are high for my height and weight. The walking pad activity is what helps me be in a deficit.

I personally wouldn’t have met my daily step goals without the walking pad. Some family members have laughed at me and said they can’t understand why I don’t just go outside for a walk.

  1. the weather is unpredictable
  2. I live very rural with no street lights for more than 15 miles, so definitely not an option at this time of year
  3. I prefer either blasting my favourite music while on it or catching up on whatever im watching on tv at that moment in time

Watch TV whilst doing it or use Audible

Wow. Well done . I’ve ordered a pad . I hope to lose some weight too . I’m 2 stone overweight. How long in minutes on a pad does 8k take ? Approximately .

NoMoreLindor · 06/01/2026 17:22

I do 10 mins at 2.4 speed and get in 1400 steps

Wow! Thats amazing. Well done. Can I ask what pad you have?

Alltheyellowbirds · 06/01/2026 17:34

I’ve just bought one. I normally get 8-10,000 steps during my day (mainly from walking to work) and I’m hoping I can up that a bit by some more walking in front of the TV at night.

I suspect it won’t be the heartiest exercise, but as I already spend most of the day sitting at a computer I don’t think sitting on the sofa at night is good for me. If I do an hour on the walking pad, however slowly I do it at least it’s not more sitting!
