All the weight is back on

Ugh. So depressing. Five years or so ago I lost about 3.5 stone. I found it hard to sustain the diet needed for that weight though, and put on a stone when I started eating more. I still watched what I ate for a while, but about a year ago the wheels have come off and I stopped weighing myself as I was scared of what I’d see.

I plucked up the courage tonight and I’m the weight I was before I took action to lose weight in 2020.

i am so annoyed with myself. I’m now in the overweight BMI category again. I feel like my body just wants to be the size and I’ll feel ravenous unless I am eating enough to be this size. When I was slim I thought about food all the time as I was so hungry. It doesn’t help that I’m under 5’3 so it’s easier to become overweight.

I need to do it again but it was so hard last time I feel so down that it’s all back on again.

Come and join us on the LOSE IT threads. The threads are based on being healthier and getting into good habits rather than a diet. I’m a similar height to you and the threads helped me lose over 2 stone. My BMI was 26 when I started and is now 20/21, depending as I fluctuate by up to 3lbs sometimes. The habits have become so ingrained that I have not eaten the Christmas chocolate. I’m just not interested. I cut a lot of ultra processed foods out and as a result my weight is pretty stable now at my goal. You’ll be very welcome and it’s a very supportive bunch with no judgement. You can do it!

Are you sure the weight you got to was realistic?
I lost a lot if weight once but it meant working out a lot and being very careful about what I ate / it wasn’t sustainable and I out mist back on over the years. Now I’m losing again but my goal is about a stone or so heavier than back then.
And sadly you can’t really stop weighing and measuring and calorie counting, even in maintenance.

I don’t calorie count at all and haven’t done for a long time now. I eat what I like mainly but do try and add more veg to meals. My body seems to have adapted to the new way of eating and has reset itself. My aim was to get to 9st 3lb which is what I weighed before having my now 10 year old Ds. I wasn’t happy at that weight and have now settled in to between 8st 4lb and 8st 7lb. I do weigh myself most days to make sure I’m not gaining any more than the natural fluctuations but otherwise I don’t stress about it. Life’s too short for crap food and deprivation. Enjoy what you eat and make good choices most of the time but don’t worry about a take away or McDonald’s occasionally.

This is why diets do not work

I lost 2 stone by changing my eating habits - and am in year three of maintaining - and haven't gained a single pound over christmas - and the house is looking like a Hotel Chocolate outlet

I made small changes, changes that I could live with forever so I didnt feel I was missing out

My big problem was white bread, butter and crisps - I lived on crisp sandwiches and even now I have a crisp sandwich , but now its just one day a week , my dont give a shit day, where I eat whatever and I dont feel one second of guilt or shame

Rest of the week Im careful. I opt for high fibre , high protein

Today I did brunch for an extended family visit for example - a full on English / irish breakfast = eggs, bacon, sausages, black pudding, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes , pancakes, potato bread, toast etc - I ate just as much as everyone else, only I stuck to the eggs and bacon- no fat - beans, mushrooms and tomatoes and only took one slice of toast and avoided the other bread products and sausages

I didnt feel hard done by or missing out

We had a family Chinese the night before - I took just the rice and chicken in black bean - avoiding the battered dishes

Just small changes that mean I dont cook different meals, and I don't have to say no to anything

Swapped wine and lager for a spirit and sugar free mixer

I still have chip cheese and curry sauce, only its at home, air fryer hand cut chips

Doner Kebab - yep - again home made - so many excellent Fakeaway recipes

Curry - at least once a week - again HM and skipping the ghee

I would say the only thing I dont have regular is pastry - no popping into Greggs on a shopping trip , but there again I now find that pastry doesnt agree with me

Pasta is now wholemeal as is bread. Rice is brown, grains such as quinoa and couscous used more

Smaller amounts of hard cheese, more cottage

Turkey mince

Just making small changes that become habit forming , its now how I eat and I really dont miss out

Took a while for the weight to go- around 1/2 lb a week, but its staying off
