Sugar

I've lost weight by modifying my diet. I now really enjoy sour and bitter foods and don't enjoy sweet things as much as I used to. One of the things I've done is stop taking sugar in my tea & coffee. Initially it was difficult and they were very bitter. After 2 weeks I was used to it. I visited my mum and she made me a cup of tea with 2 spoons of sugar in it. It was vile, I couldn't drink it. Does anyone who is trying to lose weight still take sugar in tea/coffee or drink other sweets things like cokes etc including the diet/no sugar versions?

The less sugar you eat the less palatable it becomes. This is what Brits notice when they go to the States, things there generally have more sugar that we are used too, so it tastes often uncomfortably sweet.
The same is true for what we eat day to day. If you cut out added sugar entirely, and sweet things for a while, and then eat an apple, it is going to taste really sweet.

One of the golden rules for health/weight control is don't drink calories, so cutting sugar in tea and coffee is a clear first step.

This change you made is likely to stick.
I hate sweetness. In Summer, I struggle to find an cold green tea that doesn’t contain any sweetener, so now I just ask for a hot green tea and a big glass of ice cubes.

Thanks for your replies. I agree that changes will stick as it's about changing what we are used to. US food is appallingly sweet but has been normalised. I haven't been to the US since I changed my eating habits and lost weight. I would struggle even more now than I did before with the sweetness. There does not seem to be anyone advocating for the reduction of sugar/synthetic sweetners in people's normal diet. To me it is the best way to lose weight and keep it off because you will not return to old habits of eating sweet stuff.

It is hard to make policies. People are enraged to lose their freedom of choice and sometimes, the end result isn’t that great. For example, baked beans. The no sugar added ones are horrible with a lingering taste of something wrong because companies use artificial sweeteners.

Just to be sure here, your liver can not cope with added sugar , which its why the recommended amount is no more then a tsp a day, and if you are eating UPF - you will exceed that without knowing

That's partly my point. I now find tinned baked beans too sweet. There's sugar or sweeteners in there that don't need to be there. Our palates have been conditioned to expect our savoury food to be sweetish. People are eating far too much hidden sugar.

Not just UPF. Baked beans as in my previous post contain added sugar. They are considered processed not UPF. Bread also contains sugar but shouldn't. Most places now seem to sell burgers with those disgustingly sweet brioche buns. This is a new thing. Burger buns did not used to be so sweet. Our palates are being manipulated.

Yes, still do. But only one daily cup of coffee with real sugar now.

Brioche buns for burgers are an abomination though! Ew.
