Suddenly fit after mounjaro.

Wind back 12 months ago I was 17 stone and very unfit. I did no exercise and was a real lump. Been obese most of my life.

Fast forward to now and I weigh 12.5 stone.

I have just joined the gym to get some fitness and also try and restore all the muscle I seem to have lost on Mounjaro.

Week 2 and I can run 5k on the treadmill in about 40 mins. Not massively fast at about 7.5km per hour. I’ve never been a runner.

I tried the couch to 5k a few years ago but got nowhere.

I feel a bit amazed by it.

Anyone else find themselves much much fitter as well as lighter?

Disclaimer - I’m not pretending I am super fit obviously, just far fitter than I thought I would be.

This is amazing OP well done!

workingcocker · 23/10/2025 19:33

Thank you. I found the couch to 5k approach quite boring so I just thought I would run until I needed to stop and just kept going.

It’s just easier to move without the extra weight, I’m 3.5st down and I’m concentrating on weights to build muscle.

Twinstudy · 23/10/2025 19:47

Well yes, strap 5 stone to your back and see if you still find it so easy! It's much easier to move a lighter body. But yeah, it does feel weird I know 😁

Twinstudy · 23/10/2025 19:47

Oh and congratulations on your weight loss :)

workingcocker · 23/10/2025 19:48

Well done on your loss. Agreed, but I was shocked.

I found I have lost all my strength though which is rubbish!

A long road to built it back up again.

Well, I don't know if I've just found myself fitter, but over the last year or so, as I've been losing weight I have been moving more as a result. Just in general around the house, and also walking further and faster, and then from April I started the C25K on my treadmill and I can now run 5k in about the same time as you. I am over 10st down from my starting weight, so I am not at all surprised that I can now run and am significantly fitter.

mustwashmycurtains · 23/10/2025 20:18

Agreed! I’ve lost about 17/18 kg over the last year and I noticed last week that I could actually run without it being torture. For the first time in my life. In fact I might add a run into my gym workout tmrw

smilingfanatic · 23/10/2025 20:22

It is pretty amazing that you can run 5K after just 2 weeks. Be very proud of that, many people could not do it, me included. Not sure what the science is - great lung capacity? I'd have to train for ages to run 5K - I was no better when slim.

workingcocker · 23/10/2025 20:34

Some amazing losses here, well done! 😁

Thanks OP, you inspired me to try the treadmill this morning for the first time in ages. Forgot my headphones so only lasted five mins but it was doable and a start at least!

Brilliant!!!! Yes it’s mind numbingly boring!! I have to save all my favourite pod casts to lose myself in 😂

That’s great! Even at my lightest (10 stone 10, size 10 at 5’ 11”) I could barely run a mile. Strength I had and I could walk forever but running was just not going to happen. Now at 63 I would love to be able to run a mile, just a mile in case of the zombie apocalypse! I’ve lost 10kg in the last six weeks by calorie counting (not eligible for injections as I have type 1 diabetes) but haven’t noticed an improvement in my mobility yet. Hope to lose another 10 by Christmas and get walking more.

LoveSandbanks · 24/10/2025 11:13

Congratulations on the 5k. I love running but rarely “run a whole run”. I’m very much a run/walk. And that is absolutely ok. Please don’t feel you have to run constantly to be out there running.

Im also an overweight runner but when I’m lighter it’s so much easier.

FrenchandSaunders · 24/10/2025 11:28

That's brilliant OP.

Did anyone else read this as having had a fit after taking mounjaro!

Many congratulations that is really inspiring progress! 👍

Did you follow a specific regime other than tracking calories if you don’t mind me asking?

UnimaginableWindBird · 24/10/2025 11:53

Imagine getting on the treadmill while carrying a barbell loaded up to 60kg and trying to run, and how difficult that would be. That's what you were doing before

StrongLikeMamma · 26/10/2025 11:38

I have been using weights with a PT for a year and a half op and it has been slow going as was so weak, peri menopausal and had no upper body strength.

However I have been making steady but slow gains and focusing on eating clean, low carb / high protein.

I have just started the jabs as, despite my efforts, I have not shifted more than a couple of lbs in all that time.

I’m down 5lbs in the first week of jabs - which to be honest seems too fast! But am pretty sure it will even out.

Anyway am really intrigued to see if the weight training will become easier or harder as i lose the pounds. Planing to build in more cardio too. I’d love it if my constantly aching joints would feel better as well 🤞🤞🤞
