Best calorie counting app?

I need one that's really quick to add your own foods to, as I cook from scratch.

I want to add eg 'Reginalda's tomato soup - 300ml serving' and be able to add it quickly and be able to find it again easily.

I also want it to have reasonably accurate calorie info for average fruit and veg in UK sizes, eg 1 red pepper (average size). I don't have time to weigh every carrot! I used a calorie counter app before which was fine, but it's values for "average carrot" did not match the typical value per 100g so I had to look everything up separately and check it which was really annoying.

It also needs to link with Strava.

Any recommendations?

nutracheck is great. I pay for the full version about a fiver a month but it’s really user friendly

PositiveAttitude · 29/09/2025 19:52

I agree, nutracheck is brilliant.
You can make you own meals up and add them in easily.

I paid for the year, it was £26 I think, and I think it's well worth it for all that it does.
Bar scanner for anything you buy too.
Highly recommend.

I use my fitness pal. You can create your own meals - so a bit of a pain first time but then it’s programmed in. It does scan a meal too.

Nutracheck and MFP do seem to be recommended often on here. Do they have accurate values for fruit and veg? If I put "carrot" in, do they give you an option to click "carrot, raw - 40cal per 100g" and/or "medium carrot - 30cal" ?

MFP is free and does the same as nutracheck

AreYouBrandNew · 29/09/2025 22:38

I like Cronometer (I chose between that and nutracheck)

you can import recipes if they are from a website by copying the weblink (I find that most recipes have been put on a website somewhere)

it’s got a new photo AI function which I haven’ t used loads but worked pretty well for a snack plate of seeds/dried fruit eg it read I had 11g of pumpkin seeds

it’s also linked to my sport apps via Apple health so linked to Apple Watch and polar heart monitor and do adjusts your calorie burn

AreYouBrandNew · 29/09/2025 22:41

This is most of the carrot options in Cronometer. It won’t all fit in one screen shot

you can favourite the one you use a lot.

Have a look at MyNetDiary. It does all the things you've described.

Reginalda · 30/09/2025 08:35

Thank you everyone! That's really helpful. Especially @AreYouBrandNew and @PronounPenisMan it's very kind of you to post screenshots.
Will check these out later when I'm not rushing out on school run!

This. Its the best free one I could find. I've added all my homemade food into it x

I use LoseIt - there is a free version but I paid for a year recently. There are regular offers coming up, think I bought at 68% off so it didn’t cost much at all. You can create your own recipes to re-use and can also add your own foods (e.g. if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you could create “1 carrot” and then keep re-using it).
The free version is perfectly fine to start using, the pro gives additional features such as planning/logging for the next day or taking photos of your food with the app estimating calories.

Nutracheck is the best I've found for adding homemade meals. Most, if you add a recipe, require you to specify how many portions it is and I find that difficult to track accurately especially if it's something like a chilli, as I might have some as a main meal, then a small amount on a jacket potato the next day etc. Nutracheck I can weigh it and then specify 200g/350g etc of that meal.
It's also much easier to find UK foods/brands and seems a lot more accurate than MFP.
