GP not happy with my weight loss.

6 weeks ago I saw the GP for the results of my blood tests.
She told me that I need to loose weight. At the surgery I weighed 91kg.
The next morning I weighed myself on my new scales. 90kg.
Since then I've weighed every Friday. Yesterday I was 86kg.
Yesterday I had another appointment for more results and she got me on her scales and it said 86.40kg.
That's not good enough she thought I should have lost more.
Preceded to tell me no white stuff, no cereal, no milk, more water etc.
I came away so disheartened as I thought slowly was best.
Yesterday I ate
Breakfast
Bran flakes with greek yoghurt with banana on top.
Lunch
Fresh salmon, baked potato, cauliflower and broccoli. No sauces or butter.
Dinner
Chicken and salad. No sauce or butter.
Mid afternoon I had a pear.
Plenty of water, 3 black coffees no sugar.
This is a typical day.

Is this the right loss or should I have lost more.

4.5kg in 6 weeks is normally a reasonable, steady and sustainable loss (around 1.5lb a week) and if you keep going at that rate, or even slight lower it will soon add up.

If there is a health reason you need to lose more rapidly, she should have explained this to you.

MonsterBookOfTyson · 13/09/2025 09:52

I think you have done very well.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/09/2025 09:52

Yes, this. I went from 90kg to 86kg in six weeks when I first started and was very pleased with myself. Over a year I lost 23kg. All good.

Your GP is right about white bread etc. And I find cereal completely pointless - so many calories and really not filling. When you're dieting you want the maximum bang for the buck from the calories you do have!

Chazbots · 13/09/2025 09:55

I'm about 90kg. I eat very well, so there is no low-hanging fruit to remove from my diet now. I also exercise properly.

It would take me months to lose that amount of weight safely. Well done.

Imfat · 13/09/2025 10:15

She advised that I was heading to being pre diabetic.
I don't eat white bread. No milk in anything. Don't drink alcohol.
Plenty of fruit. No sweets/cakes or chocolate.
I'm due back in December so hopefully I'll have lost more weight.

They used to say one to two pounds a week is the most we should aim to lose. Any more for a prolonged period isn’t good unless under doctors guidance.

In six weeks youve lost 4.6kg. Which Google says is 10.14pounds. So youve lost exactly what you should, between one to two pounds a week. Well done.

If someone is very overweight or on weight loss jabs they do however expect quite a large initial weight loss. Like 4 pounds each week for a fortnight Followed by regular 1-2 pounds weight loss in future. Maybe that’s what the doctor is wondering, why you didn’t get that. But if your hormones are unbalanced (peri or full menopause kicking in) you won’t always get that.

Just keep doing what youre doing and youll get there. Youre doing fab. Im impressed.

Cadenza12 · 13/09/2025 10:18

Your diet sounds good and you are getting results. What more can you do?

Gingercar · 13/09/2025 10:20

That’s pretty bad of the doctor. You’ve lost a sensible and good amount of weight in six weeks and are eating healthily. They should be saying well done. Keep doing what you’re doing. 👏👏

Imfat · 13/09/2025 10:21

Forgot to say I'm 65. And a recovering cancer patient.
Still taking an oral chemo tablet for the next 5 years.
I'm trying to get out walking more.

Thanks for your responses.

i guess your GP was simply trying to be firmly encouraging. and it has worked ?

Op came away from the appointment discouraged. It did the opposite.

OhNoNotSusan · 13/09/2025 10:27

i think the op is galvanised

TeenToTwenties · 13/09/2025 10:27

Maybe more veg, less fruit (which contains sugars), as does potato (carbs)?

I agree encouragement is what is needed.

Deadringer · 13/09/2025 10:30

You are losing weight steadily and eating healthily, well done! Your GP sounds like a twat.

What do you suggest as an alternative to cereal for breakfast?

CatAsstrophe · 13/09/2025 10:46

Your weight loss is impressive. Well done!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/09/2025 10:47

Something protein based, whatever that means to you. OP's breakfast sounds pretty good.

Personally I have plain yogurt, 30g of a high protein granola (mainly soya) and a few partially dehydrated prunes (Sainsbury's). I love it, but not saying it's the only option!

winnieanddaisy · 13/09/2025 10:47

I can’t understand you were told not to drink milk . It is full of nutrients and as long as you’re not drinking gallons of the stuff it’s low in fat and calories. I also think you lost a decent amount of weight in 6 weeks .
Im on mounjaro for diabetes and am have lost 4 stones but my weight loss has slowed down now to about one pound per week , which I’m happy with. Keep up the good work x

ApolloandDaphne · 13/09/2025 10:51

Surely bran flakes and yogurt is basically cereal and milk? I would keep the Greek yogurt making sure it is high fat and add some seeds/nuts rather than cereal. Baked potato and salmon seems a lot too. Maybe add a few small new potatoes instead if you prefer potatoes.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 13/09/2025 10:54

Some GPs give poor advice on losing weight and I think yours sounds like one of them. She also sounds like she lacks a good bedside manner.
Your rate of weight loss is fine but instead of supporting you she has made you feel down heartened which is not helpful.
I would see someone else in future.

Imfat · 13/09/2025 10:58

Of course she looks like a size 6.
I'm just going to carry on with what I'm doing.
Trying to get the right things to eat.

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 13/09/2025 11:01

Kindly, if you have been eating like this day in and day out, you wouldn’t be 14 stone, or do you mean that you’ve been eating like this since you’ve been told you need to lose weight.

either way way, it’s not a varied diet, you need more protein and more variety otherwise you are going to get really bored!

think eggs with a slice of lean bacon/salmon with toms/mushrooms for breakfast one day, another day half an avo with egg etc etc, ideally you wouldn’t have the same breakfast more than once/twice a week.

variety is absolute key x

OddBoots · 13/09/2025 11:03

It looks like 2 separate things that your GP is blending together (or at least that is how it is coming across).

The first is weight loss, your rate of loss seems sensible and within guidelines, well done on that as it's really not easy. ❤

The other is the nature of your diet and if if it high in non-fibre carbs then that could be an issue with your blood sugar and could (during calorie restriction) mean that the balance of fat loss to muscle loss is not going to serve you long term. Adjusting to higher protein could be helpful for you (and as an aside adding a bit of resistance training) so that sounds like good advice.

ChaToilLeam · 13/09/2025 11:03

You've done grand. Slow and sustainable is the way to go. Your doc sounds like an arse.

Imfat · 13/09/2025 11:05

Been trying to eat healthy since she told me to loose weight.
I think I have to research my diet better.
Before I ate a lot of rubbish, sugar in my coffee. Chips and crisps were
my friend.
Hardly did any exercise.
