Are there any that are truly free that are actually any good?
I used to use MFP but the free version is now unusable. You can’t scan barcodes any more and it’s really not user friendly.
Nutracheck I believe has a limit on the amount of food you can log each day.

I was considering getting some smart food scales, these come with an app, but are these any good? Will that have the barcode scanning option or is it just for food being weighed using the scales?

Or do I need to suck it up and pay a subscription? And if so which is best?

I use Nutracheck. Well worth £28/year as i also use it for meal plannjng

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 07/09/2025 08:23

Yes Nutracheck is very good. Really easy to use. It's worth the money and I think I got the first month free as a trial.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 07/09/2025 08:32

Nutracheck is excellent. £27.99 a year is money well spent.

ThePoshUns · 07/09/2025 08:33

Nutracheck is well worth the money as others have said

WTDress · 07/09/2025 08:39

That’s not too bad really is it, £2 per month.
thanks.

Another vote for nutracheck. As well as calories, I can watch my saturated fat, protein and salt intakes as I have kidney disease. Well worth the money.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 07/09/2025 10:00

I still scan barcodes on the free version of MFP

HansHolbein · 07/09/2025 10:55

Yes, NutraCheck. Well worth the money. You’ll be glad you did.

Silverblue1985 · 07/09/2025 17:13

I use LoseIt - just bought the paid-for version (wait a few days, there are always 60% or 70% offers coming up, which make it £12 for a year). You can then scan barcodes, but also take photos of your meals or say what you want to add - I’ve not tried either though but will probably be handy when eating out and you really don’t know what to log. It does macros, too.

Instinct1 · 07/09/2025 17:17

Just adding a recommendation for Nutracheck - well worth a few quid a month.

SarahLHs · 07/09/2025 17:27

You definitely can still scan barcodes, they’ve just changed the layout a bit

bloominoreilly · 07/09/2025 18:44

I use My Net Diary - don't know how good the free version is, but I find it good value @ £24

(edited for bad writing!)

I use the free version of mfp and I can still scan bar codes. It works well for me.

MargaritaPearl · 08/09/2025 10:14

Cronometer is really good

It’s not working for me, whenever I hit the barcode scan button I get this pop up

How bazaar. I will have to make sure I don't update the app!

CeffylCoch · 25/09/2025 14:55

Another vote for Nurtacheck. I’m maintaining now but still use it if I feel I’m going off track
