Struggling to lose weight

Pandolly · 12/08/2025 13:40

Hoping for some insight/advice ect.

I've tried various ways to lose weight in the past including Cambridge diet and wegovy. Neither was successful.

So in January I decided to try the 'right way'. Diet and exercise. So I've been eating healthily, lots of protein and going to a personal trainer and lifting weights twice a week.
8 months in now and I've lost a grand total of....0lbs.
I am so disheartened. I've worked so hard. Don't get me wrong, I'm stronger and fitter. But I'm still fat.

I've been to the Dr's, had bloods done, no sign of diabetes or thyroid issues. Was on b12 and vit D but recent bloods show my levels are now fine.
Came off the pill too.

Why am I not losing any weight?!
Just to add, I know scales aren't always accurate when losing fat but building muscle....my inches haven't changed either.

My PT is stumped. My diet is decent, sometimes I don't get in all my calories but tend to hit my protein targets, and she doesn't think I need to adjust the foods I'm eating as I'm eating healthily.

Any ideas?
FYI, I'm 5ft and 13 stone, so really do need to lose at least 3 stone minium to be a healthier weight.

after I reached 45 I started to struggle with losing extra pounds and tried tons of different ways with barely any results until I began doing a combination of these... (check with GP that it's appropriate for you first though)

  1. I restrict eating to a 4 hour window and fast for the remainder of the 24 hours. The hunger that plagued me in the fasting hours stopped after a few days, as my body got used to the new routine.
If I crave something sweet, I have low fat greek yoghurt with fruit. Or sugar free cereal.
Drink at least 2 litres of water daily too.💦

  2. I started S.I.T (sprint interval training) exercising every day - just 10 minutes a day. (the name suggests ultra gym/sports/lycra-clad fitness gurus 😅 its not about that at all) basically, it's doing short bursts (30 seconds) of maximum effort exercises followed by a 20 second ish rest. No equipment is needed, you can do these in your home.
You can do lots of these exercises while sitting down, even lying on your bed! and doesn't put stress on joints, ligaments, existing physical problems.
As someone who is semi-disabled, very weak back, hips, neck, these simple routines suit me completely and I started feeling and seeing the difference in weight, suppleness and strength very quickly!

All types of these routines are available on YouTube so you can follow.

I have lost just over 2 stones now, in 4-5 months but seriously, you can see results in 2 weeks!

Good luck! 💪xx

Hi op can I ask, yogurt and other items are you buying ' low fat, reduced fat' items
Jacket potato are high in carbs, you need to eat less carbs, it's never about the calories op all about the carb, so low in fat foods, made us believe they were better for us, no no, so take low fat yogurts, they take away the fat and replace with artificial sweeteners and flavours, that's all low fat products,

Real butter but told for years this was bad, fat not the problem op, we need good fats,
Look at a app , freshwell honestly once you get your head around the app, it shows you how many carbs ' sugar ' is in our food, it gives you weekly planning meals which you can click on to see cooking process,

Once you get your head around it, i lost 4 stone, over 6 years ago, I only eat real butter, full fat yogurt, never buy processed foods, or any low fat items ever now,
Freshwell app,

I'm in my 50s and now to loose weight my calorie intake needs to be 1200. To maintain it it's 1500.

This is with exercise too.

On 1900 calories I'd gain weight quite quickly.

Deadringer · 17/08/2025 17:03

I am on mounjoro and losing 1 lb a week on 1300 calories a day. I am 5 foot 3 and just under 13 stone so not too far off your stats although I am not as active. I use the nutracheck app which I find very helpful, tbh it has been a game changer for me to see how few calories I can consume if I want to lose weight.

Pandolly · 17/08/2025 18:50

Well done for those who have managed to get some weight off, its not easy!

To answer some questions.

I don't cook with oils.
I don't tend to eat toast or sandwiches so don't have butter.
I don't add sugar to any food or drink.
Don't drink alcohol (well, maybe 2 or 3 times a year).
Have a coffee when I get up, maybe another tea or coffee later in the day, then just sugar free squash, just a splash, in water, or my protein power (fruit flavour) in water.
Don't nibble on sweets or chew gum or mints.
Don't finish the childrens leftovers, they go to the dogs or the bin.
Yoghurt is protein Greek yoghurt from aldi.
Don't choose any low fat sort of things.
I do tend to have sweet potato over white potato unless having a baked spud.

So this is why I'm so frustrated, as since January I've literally been eating well and exercising. I'll walk to and from work, which is about 20 mins each way.
I work 6 days a week, both active jobs, not behind a desk.
I am waiting for bloods to check my hormones levels as well.

I am sticking to the lower kcals as suggested so fingers crossed I get some result from that.

I'm on 1900 kcals a day, but not always reaching that much, so already in a deficit.

Wegovy just made me throw up a lot, lose my appetite but I didnt actually lose any weight and I was on it for months.

I walk at least 10k steps a day, probably could drink a bit more but do drink a lot, hit 80-90g protein a day.

I'll have protein Greek yoghurt with low sugar muesli or a protein shake for breakfast.
A big salad for lunch (home made, no dressing, often with added cottage cheese for protein).
Tea baked potato and beans, stir fry, roast veg, that sort of thing. If I have a snack it's usually some nuts, fruit or a protein shake.

I'm trying so hard and really feel disheartened at my lack of results. Its not so much the scale, I haven't lost any inches off my belly, not dropped a clothes size, nothing to show I'm making progress.

How old are you? Ive been doing slimming world for 13 years now and ive lost over 9 stone, my target was 10 stone loss so only another stone to go but in the last 18 months ive ost no weight overall, yes ive lost 1/b here and there and then put a couple of lbs on and lost a few lbs but overall im the same as i was 18 months back. I go to group every week and stay and get weighed. I decided to set my target after xmas at what i was and ive stayed in target but totally hit a block despite doing nothing different, ive even changed things around and counted calories and recorded them for a few months on an app, been in a huge calorie deficit and still not lost, even gained some weeks :( had blood tests etc all it shows is low vit d so on supplements but drs are clueless and say i should just try and maintain , its a mystery

arcticpandas · 17/08/2025 20:06

Pandolly · 13/08/2025 09:57

I use my fitness pal and track on there, scan arcades, weigh out my food rather than guess ect.

Tbh if I obly ate when hungry I wouldn't eat, hence forcing myself just to get the calories in.
Unfortunately I'm going through an ongoing event that's very stressful and the only way that will stop is once it ends which I don't know when that may be.

Then don't eat if you're not hungry🤷‍♀️. I only say this because you're overweight, obviously if you were underweight you would have to force yourself. If you're not hungry it's perfectly fine to just have a little en-cas like some nuts, a fruit, yoghourt, salad.

reversegear · 17/08/2025 20:16

I’m 5’2 and only start loosing at 1000, to 1100 and even then it’s slow and gradual loss, do you drink wine? I wonder if you are drinking any calories we all focus on eating but I did some calculations and realised over a year of drank 6kg calories of wine!

reversegear · 17/08/2025 20:24

Oh ignore me I saw you only drink a few times a year, I’d say the calories are about 500 -700 too high, even training and exercise doesn’t burn as much as we wish it would!

I’ve been moaning about not being able to loose weight for the last 18 months, I’ve blamed HRT, water, food etc everything and then I had a gallstone stuck for 3 weeks prior to surgery and could only eat a few slices of toast a day or even less and within one month I lost 5kg after surgery another 3kg.

it’s not “healthy” loss at all but 100% proved to me all along I was consuming way too many calories, I’m gradually now eating more and I can feel that weight already come back on.

But after 1-2 years of excuses it’s very clearly my destiny if I’d like to be slim I need to live on tiny portions of food.

Pandolly · 18/08/2025 07:57

Im late 30's. Hence the Dr is sending me for bloods to check hormones as although it's not common to start peri, it's not impossible either, and I am having other symptoms like the awful sweats, I'm always sweating, sleep is awful, memory is shocking.

We are trying to rule it out as anything medical as like I say even when I've done the Cambridge and wegovy, where I was eating minimal, I lost 0 weight.

When I say I force myself to eat, it can be 4pm and I haven't eaten yet today, but I'm not hungry so have to force myself to have something.

How much water do you drink each day? Drinking enough and getting enough sleep can be big factors for weight loss, as is reducing stress.

Pandolly · 22/08/2025 22:06

I probably could drink more tbh.
Unfortunately sleep and stress have been a major issue due to an ongoing situation over the last 9 or so months.
I'm trying to be a bit more zen but there's someone out there who is refusing to let that happen.

I'm nearly a foot taller than you and losing very slowly (about 1kg a month) on around 1500 calories a day.

Is your PT a lot bigger than you? I don't think they've properly considered your size.

dayslikethese1 · 23/08/2025 22:19

1900 sounds way too high for 5ft. My maintenance is 1600 ish and I'm 6 inches taller.

If you are 5 feet tall then 1900 is too high for maintenance let alone to lose weight unless you are doing hard exercise everyday and have loads of muscle. You need to eat less

VeryStressedMum · 23/08/2025 22:44

I meant maintenance for your ideal weight not maintenance for your current weight because this seems the exact calories for your current weight as you are not losing

VeryStressedMum · 23/08/2025 22:52

Daintydino · 13/08/2025 23:33

It’s also quite concerning that your PT is stumped. Not saying they should be an expert on the eating side of things but it’s so obvious what the issue is here.

It thought the same, a pt should know that if someone isn't losing weight it's highly likely it's the food intake and also that a 5 foot woman on 1900 calories is probably not going to lose much weight

TheFirie · 24/08/2025 15:47

You are only 5ft, it is no surprise that you aren't losing weight with a 1900 calorie diet. your PT might be good at form and workout but nutrition doesn't seem to be their expertise.
How did they come out with that number. You need to go lower, around the 1200-1300 based on your adjusted weight TDEE.

BigSkies2022 · 24/08/2025 20:07

I did a 12 week course with a personal trainer (once a week) and a diet plan and lost 4 kilos in 3 months. I was told to eat 1400 calories a day, and given macro targets. And didn’t I moan and piss about the calories being too low! But the fact is, I am greedy, and there are times when food is more about comfort than nutrition and fuel, and it’s easy to overlook the difference when you have bad habits. So the regular caloric deficit and the experience of being a bit hungry some of the time is a big important lesson to learn.

trim your calories, op, monitor your intake and keep at it over months and years, and you will get there. How long did it take you to get fat? Why do you think it will take you less time to get thin again?
