Really really seriously @Alltheyellowbirds I’ve been on MJ now for nearly a year, and the only thing consistently that has a definite effect beyond the obvious of eating within your calorie allowance, is the amount of water I’ve drank. Really hot weather and don’t up my water, weight loss stalls or I gain, really hot weather and I do up my water then I lose weight. Lots of exercise with no increase in water I gain/STS, same exercise but loads of water and I lose weight.
Have read up on it a lot and there’s a few reasons for it.
- The process of breaking down fat (lipolysis) needs water to work, so if you don’t have enough water then that process cannot work properly.
- The process of healing muscle tears caused by exercise which is what makes your muscles feel sore, also requires water so your body will prioritise that and hold on to what it has. Fluid retention = weight gain on the scales.
- Same with heat. If you aren’t drinking enough then your body holds on to what it has to keep you cool, retention then shows on the scales, it’s temporary and will eventually resolve itself but disheartening all the same.
- Drinking more makes you feel fuller so you eat less and stick to your calorie allowance more easily so more likely to lose weight.
I’ve lost 75lbs since last September and without fail, every time I’ve had a plateau drinking more water has been the solution. Which is actually really annoying because it’s the one habit I just can’t seem to get to stick.
Info on Lipolysis from the internet:
Overview
Water is essential for lipolysis, the process of fat breakdown.Hydrolysis, the initial step of lipolysis, involves the chemical interaction of water molecules with triglycerides (fats) to release fatty acids and glycerol. Therefore, adequate hydration is crucial for the body to effectively utilize stored fat for energy.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
- Hydrolysis:
- Lipolysis begins with hydrolysis, where water molecules are used to break down triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids.
- Fat Metabolism:
- The body needs water to metabolize stored fat, and without sufficient water, lipolysis is impaired.
- Weight Management:
- Increased water intake is linked to increased lipolysis, potentially contributing to weight loss, according to a study review.
