Weight loss and sagging skin

watertheroses · 03/08/2025 17:01

I’m aged 55 and have started to lose some weight. I’m currently 11st and want to get down to 9 1/2st.
my only concern with the weight loss is the sagging skin. I already have jowls so I’m sure they will sag further.

I have started a slow weight loss regime which includes more protein. I am doing weight training twice a week, Pilates, and I walk the dog every day.
Is there any advice on how to stop/slow sagging skin especially on my face and arms.
Thank you

Twice a week may not be enough. Your losing fat every day, I would add in some core and arm work every day.

My friend now swims a mile more or less every day and is maintaining a 1-2lb a week loss (no change in diet), still walks about 6-12k steps a day, she looks fab no saggy skin (aged 62), however it took 2st before ANYONE noticed she'd lost weight it's that gradual.
Edited to add the bit I missed out: she swears by smiling more and using a decent hydrating night cream and SPF50 on her face daytime, always wears a hat in summer.

But how does exercise help with sagging skin in the face? How can we avoid the jowls and haggard look when losing weight?

I would try:

Supplements eg collagen
Topical treatments eg Decleor Prolagene
Non-surgical beauty treatments eg LED light therapy
Surgery if all else fails

Exercise might help for the bum and legs but not really elsewhere. Retinol and plenty of moisturiser, and time, is what helps. But all older women have wobbly arms, boobs and jowls regardless.

TBH, after losing over 2 stone, my face isnt a problem

Yes Ive a bit of a turkey neck but then Im of the generation who didn't worry about sunscreen ( 60+ )

Smile more :)

There are facial exercises you can do - google them

The weight lose has shown more in the upper arms and bum tbh, but Im not so vain to be worrying too much. Im of an age, it's a privalige to age, I still wear vests and leave my arms on show. Arse was always lacking, now its flat but that's never on public display, its just me that mourns the passing of it

Thank you. I’ve started retinol but will look into LED light treatment and a spa facial. Definitely some more core and arm work most days.

You’re already doing so many of the right things – protein, strength training, Pilates, and walking are all excellent for supporting your skin and muscles as you lose weight. Slow and steady loss is definitely better for giving your skin time to adjust.
From what I’ve seen, keeping hydrated, getting enough collagen-supporting foods (like eggs, chicken, citrus, leafy greens), and staying consistent with resistance training can really help. Some people also find that adding a bit of yoga or targeted arm/face exercises makes a difference over time.
I’ve been reading up on this lately and came across a good resource on lizzo weight loss that touches not only on weight loss itself but also on keeping results sustainable without feeling like your body is working against you.
I don’t think there’s a total way to stop sagging skin (especially as we age), but slowing it down and building muscle underneath does make it much less noticeable.
