Try to focus on getting your protein from food rather than protein bars etc, use them as an emergency top up when needed rather than your main protein source.

Some of the best protein sources are meat, fish (tins of tuna or sardines are great if you don’t like to cook), Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese.

You can buy ready cooked chicken too, handy to snack on.

You only need protein bars and shakes when you’re needing additional protein from exercise to repair the muscle. Try to get protein from your food I.e chicken, steak etc.

Calorie deficit, but don’t starve yourself. Aim to eat 5 times a day, but small amounts so you don’t feel hungry. That will avoid you binge eating. (Lots of resources online for this)

Do meaningful exercise, get your heart rate going, you want to be in zone 2 or 3 for weight loss. If you have a smart watch it will tell you what you’re in. People assume walking the dog will get them to lose weight but it often doesn’t as your not pushing enough.

good luck

As above.

Drink plenty of water.

Reduce alcohol.

Reduce sweetened food. If you have a sweet tooth, fruit and dark chocolate are better ways to get sweetness.

Use a smaller plate to reduce portion size.

Be patient. You didn't gain weight overnight, you won't lose it overnight either.

Keep the changes managable, do it with love to nourish and look after your body not to punish it.

Life will get in the way sometimes. Enjoy the special occasions or the times you need to go off piste, but don't go mad Fri pm to Sun pm (because weekend) because that's a significant chunk of every week.

Unless you are an extremely active gym bunny, you dont need protein bars etc

Actually avoiding processed foods is really the best advice I can give.

Eat from all food groups

Make sure your plate of food is at least half veggies - and potatoes are not counted as a veg :)

Dont look at being on a diet, you will fail. Look at changing what and how you are eating

You dont have to be Masterchef to rustle up healthier meals, but you do need to keep away from the take outs and the ready meals and the jars and packets

Choose bacon medallions rather than rashers. Skinless chicken, 5% fat mince, turkey or chicken sausages, turkey burgers ( surprising good ) Choose fat free greek yoghurt over a muller lite . Change your bread to wholemeal and try to limit to 2 slices a day. Pick a breakfast that's not cereal. Snack on fruit and protein - a handful of natural nuts is healthier then a packet of crisps and a plate of chopped fruit and a few slices of cheese is much more satisfying

I'm a rubbish cook who hates cooking. I still have ready meals but they are within my calorie allowance and I make an effort to have veg with them.

I lost 3.5st in a year (BMI was 37, now 27).

What worked for me as a first timer dieter:

  • log food & drink on My Fitness Pal or similar
  • review portion sizes especially for carbs (a portion of chips is tiny....)
  • drink more
  • drink less alcohol
  • plan meals
  • but take account of your natural eating habits (timing of meals, whether you snack)
  • breakfast cereals are a complete waste of calories. If you have breakfast choose something else that will actually satiate you

I'd find a few recipes that i like and practice cooking those and once you get the hang of it you can try out new recipes and spices.
