Hi im 38f with a BMI of 36. I am currently in roughly size 16-18. I suffer with PCOS and are currently looking for a solutions to aid in my weight loss. I was tempted to go back to the doctors for metformin again but this makes me really poorly. I just dont really know what to do. I was thinking about weight loss injections or even surgery.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Michael Mosley’s The Fast800 really does work but consider it a lifestyle change rather than a diet.

Im on the weight loss injections (mounjaro) and if im honest its the best decision ive made for myself. Started off with a bmi of 42 in mid December last year and now at a bmi of 25!

I do follow the Team RH plan which is calorie counting.
I cant rate it highly enough. You get so much support and find there will be so many people in similar situations that can offer advice in what has worked for them.

You could possibly start off with following a calorie counting plan to see how you get on? Before the injections or surgery

🙂

Agree about Michael Moseley. Also read Jessie Inchauspe and Dr Andrew Jenkinson. And Chris Van Tullekan!!?

Bariatric surgery seems like a bit of a nuclear option, and a big step to consider when your BMI is not super high. It’s also a permanent change to your digestive system which may or may not have the intended effect long term. Before seriously considering that as an option I’d want to have tried all other options first.

So, the other options would be a calorie controlled diet of some kind, or using WLI. The suggestion of the Fast 800 is a good one, but any calorie controlled diet that you can manage to follow would work. If you struggle to manage a calorie controlled diet for long enough and consistently enough, then that’s when WLI would be a consideration. Many people, including me, have been successful at losing weight on them and if you don’t get on with them you can stop and try something else.

Agree surgery seems a very drastic and risky step. I'd want to give both dieting and WLIs a very good go first before considering that.

Baristas surgery should be a really very last resort for morbidly obese people after all other avenues, including WLI have been explored imo.

I would consider using a WLI to support a healthy diet. I have lost 6 stone doing it so far.

I’m nearly 50 and overweight (currently 16stones approx). I have always been a food and chocoholic. I can eat a huge bar of chocolate in one go.
I’ve lost 11lbs since about Easter time for the first time in my life. I started my making small changes - increasing my awareness of cals in food and sticking to a cal allowance of 1700-2000 cals a day. But this was to increase my awareness rather than restrict. Occasionally I eat much more.

I have focused on protein and volume eating. I used to grab chocolate for breakfast but that led to me craving more chocolate all day as my blood sugars went up and down.
the first change was having the same protein breakfast everyday (protein powder yoghurt blueberries oats). Then I had the same lunch everyday (chicken with a load of roasted veg) drinking water. Then I ate my tea earlier so I wasn’t snacking when I got home from work. And I go upstairs and read before bed so I’m not downstairs snacking.
I started couch 25k in Feb did it really steadily and now can slow jog 3 miles in 40 mins (twice a week)
I also do a weights class once a week.
i have more energy and my body has changed so much.

these changes have not happened overnight but made gradual changes since January and I started with increasing exercise. I do eat crap sometimes but I don’t beat myself up about it. I just get back into my routine the next day.

I know if I dieted it wouldn’t be sustainable and if I did the injections I would put it all back on afterwards.
this is the first time in my life I’ve felt in control of my food and it becasue I know my weaknesses and not restricted volume of food but changed to eat more protein and veg so I feel fuller.

my weight has also fluctuated so much so I’ve just stuck with my plan rather than focused on the scales and overtime it’s dropped off.

good luck with it. It’s possible to change!

Penguinsmum · 28/07/2025 21:34

Well done...I'm another one who has lost weight on MJ...3.5 stone....I was an absolute binger...ten pizza slices and 5 choc bars a day!!!!! Not any more ! I really hope it works for you too 🙂

BadActingParsley · 29/07/2025 08:05

I lost a stone and a half relatively easily. Basically I cut out the crap, which for me was crisps (family bags eaten mindlessly on the sofa), random wine at home and snacking on biscuits at work. I made sure I had a protein breakfast, took a lunch with lots of veg ( soup or salad made at the weekend again with protein) and had a normal sized dinner, again lots of veg. It kept me full.

then add in walking. It works.
