What do you think about women who strive for the 90s/00s "skinny b*tch" look?

I'm asking because I'm one of those women myself. I think it's because I grew up in that era and watched a lot of MTV and shows like America's next top model etc. I also idolised skinny women in my teens. I feel like other women see me as vain and overly concerned with my appearance or assume I have an eating disorder (which I don't have btw).

I like to be fit and healthy and look and feel good about myself which does mean never being overweight.

However, I don’t have to ‘strive’ as such as I lead an active life and eat sensibly.

If I had to work at it I would feel I was doing something wrong.

JustAnInchident · 19/07/2025 19:58

I’d struggle to care less to be honest, I can’t say it’s ever crossed my mind what anyone else thinks about their ideal weight/body shape. To each their own!

Is this the same as

heroin chic

??

I think it must be that. Perhaps renaming it skinny bitch sounds better now. Back then I was very young, very skinny and very interested in fashion, but even so I thought the women in those photos looked dreadful. They looked emaciated and ill.

HunnyPot · 19/07/2025 20:17

I doubt anyone cares how fat you are

Nellodee · 19/07/2025 20:19

Has anyone seen Juliette Lewis in Yellowjackets? She is absolutely how i imagine the 90s heroin chic look looking now. She’s stunning and haggard all rolled into one (wasn’t she always?). Meanwhile, Kate Moss is and always has been fashion perfection.

Snorlaxo · 19/07/2025 20:22

I don’t think anything.

I assume you mean someone like Paris Hilton. In her case she has the money to maintain a similar body to when she was a teenager, including using a surrogate for her children.

Venalopolos · 19/07/2025 20:22

I was naturally really skinny at that time, and sort of hated it. I’m more towards the top of a normal BMI now, but saw a really skinny woman the other day and did think her clothes just looked better on her than they do on most people. Which is I assume why they choose skinny supermodels.

Plantladylover · 19/07/2025 20:24

Unless it's natural then I think it's an ED or drug induced. Which most of the 'skinny bitch' idols of the early 90s were

Melancholyflower · 19/07/2025 20:25

Do you mean that you restrict what you eat in order to be skinnier than your natural healthy weight? If so, that is definitely disordered eating.

LouiseK93 · 19/07/2025 20:25

I think if you eat healthily and are happy being a skinny bitch then be a skinny bitch! I'm very jealous of how Kate Beckinsale looks at 51! I'm 32 😅

W0tnow · 19/07/2025 20:27

SharpLily · 19/07/2025 16:56

I don't know what 'the 90s/00s skinny bitch look' is! I'm 50 so definitely lived through it but don't know what you mean. Can you give examples of women I would have heard of who would be an example of this look?

I’m in my 50s too. I’d say Kate Moss.

TinkerbellStarbright · 19/07/2025 20:28

Look at Kate moss in the 90s and now. It’s a look that doesn’t age well.

Shar270 · 19/07/2025 20:51

I've always been very skinny, still skinny at 50, it's not something I aspire to though it runs in my family. I don't think anyone had ever idolised me for it! Although now I think about it my ex did randomly like the fact that his hands could fit round my waist.

Pubgarden · 19/07/2025 21:14

Why bitch? That's really not very nice is it?

Poisonwood · 19/07/2025 21:23

Never heard the term before but don’t understand it - why be derogatory for no reason? I was a slightly chubby teen in the 90s, the ‘heroin chic’ look seemed an impossibility for normal people and I knew the vast majority of real women around me weren’t that either…but jeans really did look pretty good the slimmer you were, to my mind!
Life happened, lots of kids, divorce, but I’ve actually found myself lighter now than at any other time - my bmi is just 19. I couldn’t care less about what it looks like, in fact I miss my DH genuinely enjoying my curves, but I’m also stronger and fitter than ever before and my blood pressure etc are really great. That makes me happy, even if non-existent bum and boobs don’t. Just be gently happy, and don’t put people down regardless of all weights, and you can’t go far wrong.

yakkity · 19/07/2025 21:42

If they are over about 45/50 I think it’s a bit unfortunate because they are making themselves look very old. But that’s if it’s been pointed out to me. Normally I’m in my head about stuff and wouldn’t really notife.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 19/07/2025 21:43

I am one of these. I'm 5"4 and cannot let myself get over 8 stone. It's managed anorexia realistically,

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 19/07/2025 22:46

Crikeyalmighty · 19/07/2025 19:53

It’s to me a look to me that often looks great in clothes particularly in magazines or on TV , but in real life face to face can easily often tip over into looking ill, especially over 40 .

Does it look good in clothes though? Thin does, yes, but that early 2000s look was about being emaciated, and it looks dreadful in anything that shows the arms and legs. Makes me wince, and feel so sad for those women.

Howdiditgetsobad · 19/07/2025 23:05

I was reminded elsewhere that apparently Victoria Beckham was weighed on live tv at 8 weeks post partum. And about Heat magazine with its fat shaming.

oudle · 19/07/2025 23:14

Having worked in the fashion industry
in various forms in the late 90s onwards I know exactly this look.

oudle · 19/07/2025 23:17

What did I think about those women. They had serious willpower, very neurotic & I often couldn't understand how they functioned tbh.

oudle · 19/07/2025 23:19

Kate Moss was young & having seen her in real life frequently wasn't the same as the likes of VB.

limescale · 19/07/2025 23:20

Striving to be thinner than a natural healthy weight isn’t great, but there are plenty of very slim and healthy women who don’t look scrawny or older than their years.

limescale · 19/07/2025 23:21

Kylie Minogue is naturally very small, I would never have included her in any 90s heroin chic or what have you.

There are but is it very ageing.
look at the woman caught having the affair at Coldplay, she's only mid forties and looks much older.
