Huel

What does it taste like?
does it actually fill you up?
Does it help with weight loss?

I’m often out and about at lunchtime and find solid food hard to eat because of a health condition. At home I can manage it but when I’m out, sandwiches etc are a no go. I don’t have huge amounts of weight to lose but would like to drop about 1/2 stone.

Just wondering if Huel would be a good solution at lunch with normal food at home.

Or is there another solution?

It’s horrible imo but YFood is ok.

babasaclover · 26/05/2025 07:07

I really liked the sound of it but couldn’t take more than one sip as so vile!!!

sympathy for the food thing. I have ARFID so often just have a slimmest as easier - the powder kind you make up at home is actually lovely but the pre made is yuck

loobyloo1979 · 26/05/2025 07:11

It's disgusting.

WonderingWanda · 26/05/2025 07:11

Really disgusting I'm not fussy and can eat drink most thinks but disliked the shakes and meals.

I find the Bulk shakes much nicer. Out and about I find a couple of boiled eggs and some veg sticks very filling. Or maybe just a protein yogurt.

I've tried Huel Black for the same purpose and the same reason. It was tolerable. But it upset my stomach a bit and did not satisfy me.

Since then I've tried protein drinks or supplements, rather than complete meal replacements, and find them better. I know that soya protein upsets my stomach, and have my suspicions about pea protein, so I try to use beef, egg or whey proteins.

Peach flavour Kudu Collagen Protein is tolerable in flavour and comes in convenient single portion sucky sachets. I do need a drink of water afterwards, though.

Chocolate flavour Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is actually delicious. But it is very sweet, too sweet for me, really. So I cut the powder with unflavoured Natures Plus Collagen Peptides. This makes a drink that actually keeps me satiated.

Psychologically, I do need to chew to believe I've eaten, so I usually eat something crunchy, like an apple, after I've drunk the protein shake.

This is so helpful thank you, glad I checked first!

Im vegan too (because life’s not complicated enough 😉) but ill have a look at some of the suggestions

if you can get away with not chewing to feel satiated then try anabolic gold protein powder. However, you can honestly get solid, healthy and nutritious meals for the same calories that will leave you fuller and less likely to binge. Agree with PP about something to chew after but I’d need more than an Apple 🤣

Barbiewhirl · 26/05/2025 08:13

No its rancid! If a shake to tide you over is preferable then there are lots of vegan protein shakes now, blended with ice (even if you then have to carry it around the texture is nicer if originally blended with ice) you can find one you like the sound of.

i literally can’t chew anything more substantial than one piece of thin sliced bread or it causes huge amounts of pain. At home I’ve found some meals that I eat on repeat which accommodate that but I can’t make those when I’m at work and shop meal deals are generally sandwiches or pasta salad which I have to stop eating after 2 mouthfuls because of excruciating pain.

I’d love to be able to chew, I can’t.

I gave up with homemade soup in a flask because it’s got so boring and involves a lot of prep so at the moment I buy a smoothie and a pack of blueberries or something, that’s a lot of sugar and I end up with a dodgy stomach if I eat that too much.

Maybe I should just mix them up, I just thought if on a quick run to the shop I can get a meal replacement it would work.

As I said, I do want to lose another half stone or so if possible (not the end of the world if I don’t though.

Oh no! I liked it. I say liked as no longer have it but I did enjoy it. Only the Banana and the Vanilla, though.

I wasn't really having it for weight loss, just for convenience.

I would say it filled me up about 2.5-3 hours.

MissSmiley · 26/05/2025 08:44

I love huel and following major surgery on my digestive system three years ago I often go through phases of jyst Huel. I'm gluten free too and try to have at least one Huel a day for the vitamins as I don't tolerate the supplement tablets well. Why don't you try it yourself and see how you like it? I have a subscription which makes it cheaper than buying it in the shop.

PerkyGreyWasp · 26/05/2025 09:02

I really like Huel black, the salted caramel or chocolate one you mix yourself with the powder. There's a funny aftertaste with the ready made stuff but it's okay. I have it because I dislike sandwiches or deciding what to have for lunch, and I find it fills me up fine until dinner. I don't really have it for weight loss as you could definitely have something else for lunch that is less than 400 calories if that is the goal, but it's definitely more convenient.

Lavenderosemary · 31/05/2025 00:19

I've used huel for years. I make one every mor unf, with various supplements mixed in. I take another in a thermal cup for lunch. I use 2 x the correct water to mix it. Taste is okay, I down it in a few seconds, full for a few hours, job done. I'm definitely healthier since doing this as I'd skip meals a lot before, or have four packets of crisps for lunch and no breakfast. It's useful, functional and the tast is manageable

PresidentBarklett · 02/06/2025 21:44

I agree that Huel is vile, but I've only had the ready made ones and hear that the powder is more palatable.

A previous poster had it spot on when they recommended YFood though- the best of the pre-made protein shakes. The chocolate and the coffee varieties are best and the salted caramel and hazelnut are OK. The banana, berry and vanilla all have a funny UHT taste.

rivalsbinge · 02/06/2025 21:46

I’ve done protein shakes and fitness meals on and off over my weight lifting years and huel was the one and only that made me get awful gastrointestinal issues. I ended up at the GP getting prescriptions and it took about 5 weeks to settle. I wish I’d read this thread!!

steelingmyself · 02/06/2025 21:53

My partner drinks these and swears by them. I think they are wildly expensive and absolutely disgusting - it’s the texture!

SunnieShine · 02/06/2025 22:00

I love Hue.
