Still losing weight when don’t want to and peoples comments.

Last September I went on a diet and exercise regime and I’ve lost 14 kg. I was very overweight, BMI of 29 and whilst I have always been fit and into exercise, I was struggling and out of breath. I was convinced I was heading towards diabetes type 2.

I reached my goal weight of 63 kg in Feb but since then I have struggled to keep my weight up there. I’m in maintenance mode, but it keeps creeping down bit by bit and today it was 60kg. I don’t want to drop below this.

I’m not sure what I’ve done, but I eat loads. In fact last week I drank quite a lot of wine and treated myself to a family size pack of chocolate buttons and still lost weight. I’m eating a lot, but it’s like what I ate on my diet as I don’t want old habits to derail my efforts.

I’m doing about 5 workouts a week including weights and cardio.

I’m worried that I may have messed up my metabolism. I’ve never been able to keep it off this successfully before. I’ve been maintaining it since Feb.

The other thing is I’m sick of other people’s comments. I’m now 60kg, size 10, and 5 ft 3”. I’ve had a few nice comments and some pretty intrusive ones. Some people ask me what I’ve done, and are now doing it, but quite a few people at work, who I don’t even know have said things like “you are wasting away, you need to stop now, you are too thin”. Someone walked past me on the stairs and shouted “you are wasting away”. I don’t even know them.

I’ve asked trusted people what they think and they assure me I look ok. I also know where to stop. It was 63 KG, but 60 is definitely the lower end of where I want to be, hence the thread.

You’re in the healthy weight category, nowhere near underweight or wasting away, so clearly they don’t know what they’re talking about. Just ignore them.

If you don’t want to lose more weight, eat more. If you genuinely can’t maintain your weight and keep losing even when eating what should be enough to maintain, see your GP.

When I work out 5 times a week, I can eat quite a lot and maintain a healthy weight, so you may just not be eating enough.

Either your maintenance mode is actually too little food, or, it’s unexplained weight loss, which could be down to several serious conditions. If you’re sure you’re eating enough to maintain your weight, you need to see your GP.

I’m 52kg and 5ft3 and nobody’s ever said to me I look too thin so not sure what’s happening with people saying it to you.
Anyway you’re probably unconsciously eating a lot less than you used to and moving more so losing weight. I doubt you’ll lose much more to be honest.

Different builds..

CortieTat · 22/05/2025 16:14

I understand what you’re saying because I also need to eat around 2000 kcal, otherwise I am losing weight. Similar height, small frame and training regularly. People are rude to comment, I would just ignore the comments. 60 kg is nowhere near wasting away at this height.

Doggymummar · 22/05/2025 16:21

I think these people have a skewed idea of what healthy looks like. Below a size 6 would maybe be a concern but size 10 is a healthy size.

Op if you’re not trying to lose weight and feel you’re not undereating then it’s worth getting checked by your GP for unintended weight loss. Keep tracking your weight and calories in the meantime

RoadTrippers · 23/05/2025 10:17

Thanks for all the comments.

Of course I’ll keep track of it, but I don’t think I’ve got an illness. I think it’s more a case of I’m still eating the food that I did when I was on a diet. I don’t feel like going back to burger and chips, fish and chips and cake. My sweet tooth has completely gone.

I’m still eating salads for lunch and things like salmon, veg and grains for dinner.

I eat loads. I get 1/2 for lunch at work and I’m still eating with minutes to go. It’s like a buffet;

Miso soup
Chicken, tofu, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, olives, kimchi and something crunchy like roasted chickpeas
Fruit

I actually eat more now than before my diet

And this is why I just go with the flow at the weekends - I will have the garlic bread with my salmon pasta, a packet of crisps, if Im in town then a cheeky fast food lunch perhaps - not all and everything in sight, just I ease up and dont think damm it, diets broken now, lets go all out - I just go back to healthy eating Monday And the weight stays off, I might loose more, I might gain a pound but over the year I stay around the same

Oh and Ive noticed its the ones that are a carrying too much themselves that make the comments. Having yo yo dieted in the past, people are used to seeing me balloon, lose, balloon, this time Im keeping it off because Ive not dieted, just changed my eating habits and I think there's a touch of the green eyes going on

people here are forgetting everyone has different shapes.. BMI is very inaccurate for me as I have a wide skeleton so I was classed as anorexic while bmi said I could still lose another stone. OP might be the same

Yeah I’m 5ft 2 and was 9 stone 8 give or take a few pounds for most of my adult life, and I was slim size 8 but not skinny looking. But Someone else’s 9 stone 8 at a similar height may look different.

I started to get some “ you’re wasting away” and “are you okay”? comments once I hit around 8 stone 4

Track your calories OP to make sure you are actually getting enough food. Try to add until you stop losing weight. May be worth popping into the doctors if your can’t stop the weight loss, just in case.

I’m a different shape from my sister, at the same weight I need trousers probably 2 sizes bigger. Someone may also have high levels of muscle mass so they look leaner than others at the same weight. Plus OP’s lost quite a bit of weight so it can look quite dramatic to people who are used to her old weight.

That’s fine if that approach works for you but OP seems to have gone off fast food and sugary stuff completely which is a good thing really, so it’s not something she should start eating again just for the sake of it.

I don’t feel like going back to burger and chips, fish and chips and cake. My sweet tooth has completely gone

So her version of going with “the flow” would probably look differently to yours.

OP, I’d say maybe increase your healthy fats and protein intake or more strength training at the gym. Well done on losing the weight!
