Weight watchers or calorie counting

Which should I do, it is either or so no comments on other diets please as I'm not interested in those.

I've done weight watchers before, it works but I soon fall off, not done calorie counting before.

So my question is, which works best?

To lose weight you need to eat less calories than you burn. However not all calories are the same in terms of being healthy. I could consume all my calories at KFC or I could eat the same amount of calories eating grilled chicken, vegetables, fruit, Greek yogurt etc.
i try to limit how much ultra processed food I eat, drink lots of water and do exercise.
I have never done WW and use calorie counting as a way to maintain my weight.
I’m 53 and peri menopausal

Bookstablependiary · 14/05/2025 09:38

I did calorie counting (lost 5.5 stone and maintained). The reason I chose it over anything else was because I decided I needed to do something that was life long, so that I can maintain. But also the flexibility of it. I count over a week, so never feel I fail as if I have more calories one day I adapt the next day.
Having said that I think its what works for the individual and you need to find what's best for you. If one things failed before why has it failed? Is it the right thing for you?
Good luck.

I'm on a calorie deficit at the moment using my fitness pal. Started at 10st 6 and now I'm 9st 12 after 3 weeks. It's so much easier and cheaper than weight watchers!

Emmz1510 · 14/05/2025 12:46

I use slimming world and I found weight watchers overly restrictive.
My friend has had great results (5 stone plus) with a calorie deficit plan, so I’d have to say that, if you want me to choose between those two.

I am using the NHS free 12 week weight loss app and so far i have lost 2 stone, i find it very good as you are accountable for your calories and it also gives you recipies etc

My fitness pal (free version) calorie counting here. I'm down 15lbs in 6 weeks No exercise except walking. Never hungry and it's free!

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 14/05/2025 15:32

I’m a big fan of calorie counting. It’s logical and flexible imo.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 14/05/2025 15:32

Work out TDEE
Minus 300-500 cal per day
Eat that many calories per day tops.

I have lost weight on both and both encourage the same things. I would do what motivates you to stick to it. I’m currently low carbing which is working for now and will hopefully slowly increase carbs.

finaldestination55 · 14/05/2025 17:03

In my 50’s and lost two stone with WW. It did take me about 10 months and I’ve been maintaining for around 6 months. It’s the first time I’ve tried WW, tried many others, so pleased with the success. I only exercise moderately which might be why I lost the weight quite slowly. Hope this helps.

I used the weight watchers app whilst getting into the groove (19lbs down but I’ve not weighed for three weeks). It’s calorie counting made easy really. My only complaint is the ridiculously high points values they give plain rice and pasta, which are free foods on Slimming World.
Controlling my weight is my life's work. Good luck!

TinyFlamingo · 15/05/2025 08:28

Calories counting/calorie deficit can be boosted with intertermitant fastings.
Depending on age/hormones it can be effective too.
Not suggestion other diets, just that IF can help with calorie and maximize impact.

My fitness pal is good for logging and monitoring your calories as well.

Good luck ont he decision and your weight loss journey.
