Three stone to lose but 54 and it is NOT shifting: what worked for you?

I'm not going on weight loss injections so if that worked, I'm really happy for you, I'm not a candidate for those - but I am getting desperate.

I usually eat at 12 (naturally) and stop before 8. I cook my own food and eat pretty healthily. Lots of veg, grains, fish, chicken, eggs. No cheese, red meat, butter, and very little bread. Some alcohol but have cut right back.

I'm not diabetic or pre-diabetic, and my thyroid is ok: recently had a health check and apart from being overweight, I am in good health.

I do weights, yoga and I walk 5km per day. I get the feeling this isn't enough, but what is the right amount to increase to?

It used to be so easy for me, and it is now impossible. I've been circling the same two kilos since the new year. I really need to lose weight - help!!

Why are you pissing around with slimming fads. ?? At 3 stone overweight you will qualify for Mounjaro !! The cost is off set against the amount of foot you don’t eat .. 17st 7lbs to 9st 1lb in 9 months and maintain 7 months after goal .. why would you not ? I’m off BP meds , statins, knee injections and a whole host of self loathing…

I am not 'pissing about with slimming fads'. I have a healthy diet and do some exercise and we're discussing how to tweak those things to lose weight.

I said right at the beginning of my post that I can't take WLI - you must have missed that bit.

HollidayRanger · 29/04/2025 15:04

Not everyone can have the WLI but it’s the only thing that worked for me, basically because my calorie intake dramatically reduced. So I would say cut the calories.

thischarmimgwoman · 29/04/2025 15:10

WRT WeightWatchers - it’s a way of restricting your calories; but you still don’t know how many you’re consuming. This is key.

It does! So long as you track accurately, of course.

Yesterday I had 1508kcal. Walked 6.7k steps (just under 5km) and did a bodyweight workout.

@Vatsallfolks also , it doesn’t work for everyone as well or quickly as it’s worked for you and isn’t always without pretty unpleasant side effects. I’m only 7lbs down on mounjaro eating like a saint in a month - which isn’t to be sniffed at , but have felt sick 3 days a week and chronic indigestion and to be honest I would lose this on very strict calorie control and no booze. I don’t have any problems with WLI and great if it works and you feel ok on them but it’s not that simple for others and there are many medical reasons why they are contra indicated for some- OP put this in her original post

Ah, I apologise. It’s changed since I last used it then.

OMG you could be me too ( except I'm a couple of years younger) I came on here thinking everyone will say fasting, but I don't eat until 12 normally either. I've started making my own Kefir so have a shot of that now at 10 and stop eating at 8. No movement at all!

Happymomoftwo · 29/04/2025 17:19

My DH is 52. He did intermittent fasting for over a year but still didn’t lose more than half a stone. We worked out that by missing breakfast he was kind of compensating by eating a larger lunch and dinner. So we re introduced healthy breakfasts and swapped out sandwiches, instead he has overnight oats for lunch or proper chicken in a pitta bread. I’ve stopped buying anything for him that has mainly red or amber guidance on the packs. I have joined him in eating healthily. He has lost over a stone in six months and I’ve lost just under a stone. We never eat past 8pm. We have viewed it as a lifetime change not just a fad. We allowed ourselves a few treats while on holiday but got back on the healthy regime once we came home.

The main reason for our change was medical…. His cholesterol and bp was high. For me, I had to cut out all caffeine due to migraines (thank you perimenopause) so gone was all the chocolate!

Walkley18 · 29/04/2025 18:04

Post menopausal, mid 50s, 5 ft 3. Overweight most of my adult life. I've lost over 3.5 stone during an almost two year period, mainly a pound a week off (then half a stone on at Christmas and hols etc!) For most of that time I was working from home and had little exercise. I have been following the Slimming World plan, so not in a group or paying for app. I had a friend who told me the basics, am on a Facebook group and googled the rest. I have reduced carbs (pasta/ spuds etc) not because its on plan to do so but because I was so sedentary I thought I needed to. Not really missed them, or wine which I rarely have at home now (would rather have a small kit kat for same syns!) I have missed bread, which I rarely have as I use my healthy extra b option for fibre choc bars in the evening as a treat. It's been slow but I've seen it as a lifestyle change and took joy from each half stone shed/ old dress I could fit into again. Some I kept for 20 years as I so loved them and now I'm in them again! I am less than a stone to target, which I'd hoped to achieve by 2 year mark but will be later than that now. Good luck with your weight loss journey!

TBH I think any kind of diet works over 50, the difference is you don't have any leeway and have to be very strict to actually loose weight.🙁

I think you're right!

Have you weighed, measured and calculated your calorific intake?

I signed up to Weight Watchers a couple of weeks ago, which was key in understanding my portion sizes were too big. Now my meals are smaller! (But I am not: YET.)

People saying walk much more: gotcha. I just worked out a route that'll take me just under 2 hours. It's 8km/5 miles. Will need to be up early but it's the right time of year. Time to get a very engrossing audiobook I think. I do weights workouts 3x per week as well and yoga 2x per week. I'm not sure I can walk that every day tbvh! How do your feet not complain?

I recommend really good walking/hiking shoes. I've now got a really great Merrell pair with memory foam cushioning and strong, grippy soles and it makes SUCH a difference. I walked 25km on gravelled/stony paths on Saturday and my feet were a bit aches by the end but nothing like they would have been in ordinary shoes.

I also find stopping relatively regularly even for a few minutes really helps to prevent/manage sore feet.

colouringindoors · 29/04/2025 18:51

54 and 4 stone overweight 😪 and struggling to loose as I also have long covid with severe fatigue. Very low carb helps, but I find it hard to maintain.

Mrsredlipstick · 29/04/2025 19:04

Hello OP. Over the last three years I have lost six stone, two still to lose. I'm 59.
I was worried I wouldn't get care if I fell ill (I did). I gave up alcohol first and the cheese and crisps that went with it. We are a foodie family with trained chefs but I'd became ashamed and it was effecting my mental and physical health.
I used nutracheck and I could have 1456 calories a day. I lost four and a half stone and then had major gynecological surgery. Prior to this I tried WLJ for three weeks but ended up in hospital as I had gallstones which is a no with this medication. I now have to have my gallbladder out. I'm now too light. I had considered baratric surgery but I stuck to my calories and it came off. I don't think I've been this light for 15 years. I don't eat bread, no red meat but I eat chicken and fish. I was a veggie for decades so I buy posh fruit.
My skin is fine. I work in beauty but don't have fillers or botox. I can't really exercise as I'm disabled but I'm hoping to swim again. I think as I got slimmer I made better food choices. I don't like sweets or chocolate but giving up the wine was a killer. I'm post menopause with no hormones. I lose about 2kg a month. I'm happy with that. Size 26 to 16. I'm 180cm.

Lascivious · 29/04/2025 19:22

I would not lose an ounce on 1500 calories, in fact I’d gain weight and I do loads of exercise. I’m 52 and I think my metabolism and calories needed have changed drastically with peri menopause.

I’m 5’8 and I’ve gone from 188 pounds to 137 with Mounjaro, it’s a shame that’s not an option for you.

I can lose weight by following a very low calorie keto diet, but nothing has worked like Mounjaro. I’d lose a stone and get bored and continued like that for 3 years.

Now I’m down at 9 stone 11, I can keep my weight steady by doing 16:8 and limiting calories to about 1000. I have to accept I just can’t eat a lot any more and stay slim. The good news is my cholesterol has reduced massively, and my blood sugar (neither were an issue but were on the high end of normal). My BP is low too.

F1rugby23 · 29/04/2025 19:35

Only thing that ever worked for me was doing v low carb for a month. Four days out of five no carbs, fifth day a bit of carb. No bread or alcohol, lots of meat or fish, eggs, greek yoghurt, nuts plus tons of green veg or salad. On carb days, a bit of porridge, fruit and new potatoes with meat or fish. Exercise every day, alternate between run, weights and walking. Tons of water, a bit of dark choc for treat. Very boring but worked.

F1rugby23 · 29/04/2025 19:35

Lost one stone in a month

sprungingspring · 29/04/2025 20:22

Changeissmall · 29/04/2025 11:14

Sounds like you need to do something drastically different for a while as your lifestyle sounds very healthy.
The ‘fashion’ now is very much low carb so your avoidance of red meat and butter goes against that. Maybe try a no carb or low carb high meat diet for a couple of weeks?
I was almost exactly the same. Same age and 3 stone overweight so am on WLI. Two stone down and it’s marvellous. Agree re the alcohol. Just can’t drink on this medication and it makes all the difference.

What’s WLI?

Sighthoundsforever · 29/04/2025 20:46

Hi op. I’m a very similar age to you at 53. I’m also tall - 5ft 11. Since new year of this year I have lost 2 stone. What worked for me was sticking to calorie deficit pretty strictly. Eating a lot of the same foods I really like just to make it easier to calculate calories. Walking 10k every day. Drinking lots and lots and lots of fluids - mainly tea and coffee. Alcohol hardly ever. No takeaways. I found i got into these habits very easily and quickly and once saw results got very motivated to keep going. Best of luck

Mrsredlipstick · 30/04/2025 06:40

I agree re walking shoes or boots. I've had my scarpas for years. Walked at least 1k miles in them. They have good ankle support.

WLI = weight loss injection
WLJ = weight loss jab?

So today I weighed myself and I've inexplicably lost 1.3kg - 2.86lbs. How??

Yesterday I ate 1550 calories, only 2 meals/no snacks, loads of veg in that I suppose, and drank about 2l of tea and water (and no-alcohol beer). I did a weights workout but did not walk a lot as I was working, just 4k steps.

It's not a wholly unusual day. Normally I'd try to get my step count up at some point but I had a deadline. Sigh. I don't understand it but I'll take it!

OP posts:
TweetingHurricane · 30/04/2025 09:36

That’s interesting about the glasses of wine puting that much weight on when you are in a calorie deficit, I don’t understand at all. Seems it’s not just about calories in vs calories out that everyone says

TokyoKyoto · 30/04/2025 09:36

Interesting! I am coming to this conclusion. I thought 1500 was reasonable (I'm also 5'8") but maybe 1200 or something is what I need to do.

OP posts:
LushLemonTart · 30/04/2025 09:38

@TokyoKyoto how much do you weigh?
Glad you've lost some.

CreationNat1on · 30/04/2025 09:43

I met a guy about 6 months ago, that only drank water, no other drinks at all and only ate one meal a day. He was lean. We really don't need all the food and food noise and stimulants that are marketed to us. One week of the above regimen would make a big difference to most of us.
