35 pound weight loss in one year

Please be honest and tell me what you think about that rate of weight loss. It was on the slow side as I wanted the weight loss to really involve lifestyle changes which will stick. So I’ve started to go swimming twice a week (I now love). And going on longer dog walks (bought a stroller for the elderly dog so I can get extra steps in). I’ve also cut back on alcohol. I think I’m more mindful with calories ie before I would have had no problem putting 1.5/2 avocados on toast with egg and bacon. I am more conscious of where calories can hide.

Soemtimes i feel like it’s a pretty pathetic rate of weight loss. Especially as I have still have 2 more stone to lose. And when I see people getting very think on wl jabs almost overnight I’m very envious and discouraged

Im looking for brutal honesty.

Why does it matter what anyone else thinks about the rate of loss? You can't change what's already happened.

Losing 2.5st is brilliant, regardless of how long it's taken you. It's irrelevant how quickly or what method other people are using to lose weight, it's not a competition and what they do doesn't impact on your weight loss and health in any way.

If you're finding your lifestyle changes to be enjoyable and sustainable, then you're in a brilliant position to continue on as you are, and before you know it you will have dropped the rest of the weight and achieved your final target.

What does it matter what other people think? Are you happy with the loss so far? Do you feel better for it, and the lifestyle changes you're making, and are they sustainable? 35lb weight loss is not nothing, you should be proud of what you've done.

Brutal honesty? Could you lose more weight quicker, almost certainly. But would it be as healthily and maintainable as you're doing now, probably not. Crash dieting is miserable, and you're so much more likely to just pile it back on again. If you really are wanting to up the loss, carry on the way you have been, small improvements to your calorie intake, or gradual increases in exercise. You are doing great, keep it up

It’s just very tempting to go on a diet plan. The slow rate can feel very demoralising especially when so many people are losing weight so quickly. Sometimes I reckon I should just go on a proper diet plan and get the weight loss over and done with.

but diets just don’t work in the long run for me. I have dropped the same 40/50 pounds at least three times in my life

But you said that you wanted to lose the weight slowly, because you wanted real lifestyle changes that will stick. That's what you've done, so you've been successful in your plan, which is great.

Who are these people who are losing weight quickly? Are they friends or is it people you see on social media? If it's the latter, then I'd change what you're viewing and following, get rid of those kinds of images/updates from your feeds and focus on other aspects of health and wellbeing instead.

Keep doing what you’re doing, as you’re building healthy lifestyle habits that will last and help you maintain your weight loss. Well done on what you’ve achieved so far. You must be feeling the effects of it both mentally and physically.

Oh god, yes! I had started to feel really horrible in my body. Back would hurt after very little activity (I carry weight on my chest). I feel so much more nimble on my feet.

Well, there you go! 😊 Don’t worry about the speed at which you’re losing weight, nor what others are doing. You’re already feeling the benefits of your weight loss, have done really well in a year already, and will lose the other two stone if you keep going as you are. A steady weight loss is far more sustainable than a very quick loss as you’ve learned habits that you’ll maintain. Enjoy your success!👏👏👏

I did 18Kg loss between about May and the following March / April.

By eating healthier meals, cutting snacking, cutting most alcohol and adopting more moderate portion sizes of high calorie foods.

It wasn’t hard once I got into the habit, (I had sporadic massive tumbles from wagon, just hopped back on), and laid down easy to manage healthier eating on the longer term basis for maintenance.

That is a key benefit.

IF you can do it like this (and it sounds as if you are making great progress) then fantastic. It has to be better for you than jabs, is much cheaper, and you are on your route for permanent change.

Well done OP, keep at it!

Inmydreams88 · 11/04/2025 18:08

Sounds like you’ve done so well OP well done. Losing weight is essentially the easy bit (even tho it’s incredibly hard) maintaining it forever is the harder part and it sounds like the changes you’ve made will help you so much in the long run. A crash diet is no good, it won’t teach you good habits.

Who cares if others do it quicker, just focus on you.

mamakoukla · 11/04/2025 18:15

You are doing amazing! It’s not just weight loss but also changing habits for a healthier life. Celebrate your achievements 💐

I have lost 17 lbs; 6 more to go. It’s taking more than a year but I absolutely enjoy getting back into older clothing and my hope is the slow and gradual is sustainable and won’t bounce back because it’s not a yo yo situation.

howdoyoudooooo · 11/04/2025 18:22

You’ve found a way of eating and living that works for you, don’t ruin it by going on a diet plan! 35lbs is a lot whether it’s taken you 6 months or 2 years, it’s still the same weight loss. A lot of people give up because things don’t happen quickly enough, but look how far you’ve come. Be proud.
