Let's lose weight! (Whilst breastfeeding)

Hi.
Anyone else in this stage at the moment?

I know you hear tales of the weight falling off when you breast feed but this wasn't the case with my first and its proving difficult this time too.

My baby is 5 months. Sleeps reasonably well with a couple of wakes per night but straight back to sleep without needing to be settled.

I just can't stop eating/ thinking about food!!!

With my first weight loss was much easier once I stopped breastfeeding.

I'm 10kg overweight. I'd love to be at a healthy weight by my 40th birthday in October. But I also want to breastfeed until 12 months (also October.)

Make sure you have no junk food in the house. Whatever is going into you is going into baby so make aure everything that passes your lips is healthy. Weight your portions. Get out of the house/do something instead of snacking.
You will get there!!!

Mamofboys5972 · 28/03/2025 08:55

Same. With my first I GAINED weight breastfeeding and didn't lose a single pound before falling with my second. He's ony 10 days old but I know I'm just going to gain again 😭 I'm already big I don't need to be bigger !
Any tips appreciated, I'm trying to eat better but sometimes when you have a baby attached to your nipple the best you can grab is a breakfast bar, full of sugar and makes me starving 8 minutes later 😕

Silverfoxlady · 28/03/2025 22:47

I managed to lose11kg over the last five/six months by eating 1800 calories (Recommended by NHS as the minimum calories to eat with breastfeeding, 600 calories per meal), drinking 500ml before a meal and 500ml cup of herbal tea afterwards, and walking for an hour / an hour and a half a day (while baby slept in the pushchair).

It worked well, but now the weight loss has slowed down (might be because I keep hitting the pizza!).

Ahh is anyone still here? I could really do with some support. I have a twelve week old and we are exclusively breastfeeding - I have about four stone to lose and whilst I have lost a little bit, I just know it would absolutely fall off me if I could stop shoving absolutely everything in my mouth! I am not even overly hungry, just so greedy! I'm obsessed with chocolate and it's almost like I just don't have control, it's gone in my mouth before I've even had time to think about what I'm doing. Anyone else like this?

CortieTat · 17/04/2025 08:02

Can I join?
Baby is 4 weeks old. I have 4 kilos to lose to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I don’t get much sleep at this stage, baby is quite fussy and has to be burped and settled at night. This unfortunately translates to me craving sugar during the day because I’m tired and looking for a quick fix!

I was very athletic before the pregnancy and I am already back to low impact training which helps me to stay sane 😅. I don’t have high expectations but I would love to get my body back. Looking for some accountability.

Mamofboys5972 · 17/04/2025 14:00

@Justanothermum9421oh my god the chocolate thing ! I can't stop myself I feel like it's all I think about. I feel so so tired and hungry all the time I'm just eating sh*t constantly I feel awful in myself.

@CortieTatmy baby is 4 weeks old too 🥰 I think I had maximum 3hr sleep last night. I'm surviving on black coffee and Nutella on toast at the minute 😬 how you have time to exercise is insane! Go you 💪

Justanothermum9421 · 17/04/2025 14:09

@Mamofboys5972 oh god I'm reading this whilst shovelling a caramel cadbury's bar in! That and lattes are my weakness, I feel like I need to get out of the house so I just go out and grab a coffee but I think it's an addiction now! I just can't stop 😭
I'm sure you and @CortieTat are doing fab, four weeks is where the adrenaline has run out and the absolute exhaustion kicks in, at twelve weeks we are sort of just bumbling through 😅
I would love to get into doing some exercise but have no idea what!!! We do a lot of walking but I am under a women's health physio has told me not to do any exercise other than said walking at least until I see her again next so that's out of the question for now. I'd love to try Pilates!

Mamofboys5972 · 17/04/2025 15:01

@Justanothermum9421I've just made my way through a bag of these galaxy mini egg things 😭 I can't do much exercise yet either I had to have a cesarean and still on "rest" mode until my 6 week check! I would love to do more walking, but I have a 2 year old devil child 🤣 maybe if I just leash him?? Haha! I've never tried pilates either? I love swimming but never have the time to go on my own. Honestly don't know where to start with all this. The thought of calorie counting or anything makes me terrified. I am SOO hungry feeding this baby it's next level, I would be starving all the time x

Silverfoxlady · 17/04/2025 15:50

Hey Mums!

I can’t believe some mothers are posting only 4 weeks after having a baby. I was barely functioning at this time (Velcro baby, couldn’t even feed myself I was so tired). I was fighting evil nappy rashes and anxiety too. I was addicted to tea cakes and marshmallows and Wagon wheels. That period was a nightmare.

I know I am going to be controversial and say - eat the chocolates and lattes! If you need something to get you through the next few weeks, do it. You have plenty of time to worry about all that weight loss.

I only started exercising and cutting down when LO was six months. I was struggling to even walk straight for the first three months (my whole body felt misaligned), and at six months I was feeling better physically and she was having small meals too.

I read somewhere that it takes around 400+ calories more for breastfeeding a day, which is why it makes us so hungry. It is needed.

Mamofboys5972 · 17/04/2025 16:36

@Silverfoxladymy DS is a velcro baby too 😭 whole new world for me because my DS1 was so independent and laid back from day 1, this baba just screams unless he's getting fed or asleep! I'm like a walking zombie it's soo hard. I keep asking my DP to make me toast during the night just to get me through. Also, my boys have got themselves into a routine, where baby wakes up at 5am to feed, then older DS wakes at exactly 6:30 just as I finish feeding, so that's my day started! Not fun haha.

100% agree though, our bodies are putting so much into our DC and we need to listen to what our body needs right now 🫶

CortieTat · 17/04/2025 16:58

I had a really good birth (home) so no injuries fortunately and my recovery was fast, physically I feel fine. Mentally I feel like I’m swimming in jelly, everything just kind of happens around me and I barely notice as the day goes by 🙃.

I was addicted to exercise before pregnancy so this is my mental health fix - I do LesMills post-partum workouts handing the baby to DH.

My weakness today was ice cream. I track calories, I have done this for nearly two years so it’s easy for me. Doesn’t mean that I am able to stick to the limit though!

Anyway, for accountability:
CW: 55.3 kg
GW: 50-51

Mamofboys5972 · 17/04/2025 17:08

@CortieTati struggle to track calories due to old and recovered from ED years ago. I end up in a vicious cycle! You sound in such a good place. Can I ask how tall you are though? 50kg is a very low weight. I'm 5ft3 and 50kg is underweight for my BMI

I’m 161 cm which is I think around 5ft3. I’m overall very small though - small frame, feet size 3, small hands, narrow shoulders and wrists, so at 50 kilos I just look totally average (size S and M in Uniqlo clothes).
