Hi! I'm 41 confused as to why I'm not losing weight. I'm trying to be honest with myself about what I'm eating and how much in exercising but I'm drawing a loss here as to why the scales aren't shifting...if anything going up.

I've had 2 kids, I don't have periods any more as has a partial hysterectomy so it's hard for me to know if anything hormonal is at play.
My ideal weight is 10 st. I weight 11 stone.
I have lost weight successfully before on keto/low carb but now I'm doing it again and it's not working could anyone help suggest what I'm doing wrong?

Breakfast: 2 eggs scrambled with 2 rashers of airfield bacon

Lunch: tuna steak, tomato salsa and lettuces

Dinner: seabass fried and brocoli and mayo and hot sauce
Pudding greek yog, flax and blueberries (only 4)

Snacks: 4 teaspoons of Peanut butter
Drinks: 4 cups of tea with milk
Sugar free squash.

I exercise 3 or 4 times a week. 2 core classes and 1 run. I also run to the gym for the classes so that's another 30 mins.

I would have thought I'd be in ketosis and be seeing progress. It's frustrating...any advise?

I have to eat 1400-1500 calories a day to lose weight and I have over a stone still to go.

I laugh bitterly when people suggest using the James Smith calculator and it suggests more calories than I was eating when gaining weight.

I do try and have plenty of protein, fibre and veg but it always comes down to calories in the end for me.

I was doing similar and gaining weight. When I calculated my TDEE it was only 1400. I was eating 1500 to try to lose weight.

I also realised that as I was perimenopausal I was doing too much cardio, as cardio i creates cortisol which causes weight gain. So all my gym sessions were, it seems, pointless.

I was exercising and dieting and gaining weight.

It can do, but the clue is in the name, it's good for your heart, and even my weights based sessions are heart rate raising. Above all you should do exercise you enjoy and I absolutely love running outdoors in the spring sunshine.

It's overdoing it which will raise cortisol. Too much too soon when you aren't fit stresses the body, particularly if you are already under stress at work, say.

Yes, fats give you energy but vegetable oil added to food in dressings and to fry do not fill you up so why on earth waste all those calories. You get your fats from things like oily fish (OP eats tuna) and other sources. Cutting out these oils is an easy way to reduce the calories she is eating.

Whole milk is fine if she is just putting a splash in tea etc but again, cutting down to semi skimmed milk is an easy way to reduce calories if you are drinking a lot.

Full fat milk contains 4.7g per 100ml carb/sugar and semi skimmed contains 4.8g so it is a miniscule difference. (Semi skimmed contains 0.1 protein more than full fat).

It is also very important to make sure as well as protein you are getting enough fibre in your diet.

What she was doing was not working. I have lost the exact amount of weight she wants to and, more importantly, I have kept that weight off for almost 18 months now. Any diet needs to be sustainable.

OP I’m in the exact same position as you - 41 and the weight just isn’t shifting on the scale! I’m 10st 6lbs and 5’7 for reference with the same goal weight as you of 10st

Done keto in the past before with good results but last time I tried it (last year) it didn’t work - I do wonder if your body reacts differently to it when done repeatedly and also with age as first time I did it I was mid 30s

BUT I am noticing differences in my clothing - I do dog walking for half an hour daily, gym 5 times a week. My wide leg size 12 jeans I’ve recently swapped to a size 10 - the exact same brand and item.

I suspect that I’ve got hidden calories I’m not considering though. Recently swapped to an oil spray. I think I need to increase my water intake as I also suspect I’m retaining water post workout - try drinking more water

I completely sympathise with you though!! Makes your 40s so much more difficult doesn’t it. And I’m in a family where all the women on DPs side do Mounjaro so I’ll be at a meal with a load of skinny minnies on Sunday….. sigh.

I would say to pay more attention to your measurements and fit of your clothes than scale weight. If you are also building muscle then muscle weighs more than fat.

Thanks so much everyone who's commented. I used to lose weight so easily in my 20s and 30s I'm using loseit app to log now. Oil spray and no more Peanut butter for me! Will definitely be keeping my yoghurt and flax and blueberries though! :-)
