Weight loss with PCOS

Hey,

I have PCOS and I’m trying to lose weight to help with my TTC journey. I just wondered if anyone has any suggestions of things that worked for them.

i've heard that GLP1s can help relieve symptoms or help manage overall symptoms? believe i read it on a pharmacy website once or via a newsletter. can find it if you want to see it

The only thing that has ever worked for me is mounjaro, which is annoying as obviously it is expensive. I've tried everything - slimming world, weight watchers, calorie counting, keto, low carb high fat. I've taken metformin and inositol. You name it I've tried it. I'm 99% sure I've got insulin resistance, and taking mounjaro has made a massive difference. I've lost 16lbs in about 8 weeks so far

Obviously I don't know your circumstances or if you would be eligible, but being truthful it is the only way I've been able to lose weight

How much do you have to lose? I've lost almost 4 stone in 8 months on Mounjaro.

Sunat45degrees · 07/02/2025 10:56

Yeah, sadly, I've not had much luck and was on metformin for years which simply helped me to stop gaining weight. I am very keen to try mounjaro.

One thing htat has helped me a BIT (but I'm older so it might work better for you) is intermittent fasting. The book "Fast like a girl" apparently has a section on PCOS so it might be worth looking into. I lost 4kg on IF but can't seem to lose any more which is annoying. But then I'm also well into peri-menopause now so I have a feeling it might have been different when I was younger.

@Lanawashington I heard somewhere, i THINK, that women with PCOS take lower doses of Mounjaro. Is that true or did I totlaly make it up!?

Switching to a low GI diet and taking the supplement myo- inositol worked for me. I couldn’t get on with metformin, it upset my stomach too much. Also low cardio exercise is meant to be best for weight loss with PCOS so I tried to do plenty of walking and a bit of weight training

I’ve not heard about lower doses for PCOS but I’ve not looked too much into that to be honest. Although even on the lower doses I’m doing well so far and can tell it’s made a difference to my insulin resistance, so I can see why that would be suggested. I’m only on 2.5mg so far and haven’t gone up to 5mg yet

@Herewegoagain8 do you mean low impact cardio? And what sort of exercises are these?

Lillipops · 11/02/2025 00:11

I have PCOS and I have been on every diet under the sun. Mounjaro is working for me I'm 3st 10.5lbs down since September. I don't crave anything fatty, takeaways etc I now seem to be craving vegetables and salad....it's weird but 100% it works

So a lot of walking and swimming rather than running and I bought some kettle bells and did kettle bell workouts online. Anything that builds muscle so dumbbell workouts etc are better for PCOS.

howrudeforme · 13/02/2025 09:19

Lots of walking. Work colleague returned to office after the lockdowns transformed by daily waling (she has PCOS). Do you have much to lose.

i have PCOS and in my early 20’s lost loads of weight and was v slim into my late thirties. When TTC they said it would be good for me to put in a bit of weight. Now I’m back years later about a stone oversight and can’t shift it.

good luck.

I'm on Mounjaro for Diabetes, also have PCOS. In the past I've only been able to lose weight by eliminating all carbs except those in green veg and being starving hungry all the time. MJ definitely makes it easier to stick to the diet long term as don't have the starving hungry feeling.

Dosing is different, you do the2,5mg for 4 weeks then move to 5mg and stick to it until it stops working as well. For me that was 20 weeks and I'm moving up to 7.5mg next week for 4 weeks then to 10mg and I'll stick to that indefinitely.

It has been miraculous at controlling my insulin/sugar levels, I've been able to completely stop insulin injection and metformin tablets and my levels are perfect.

I needed fertility treatment to conceive DD1 and then did Fast800 + IF + metformin and was able to conceive DD2 naturally. Theres a bit on the Fast800 website about PCOS. Lost 12kg in 12weeks. I didnt religiously stick to the 800cal per day as obviously found it very unsustainable! But i did find around 1200 very easy to manage and still lost around 1kg per week on average. I came off the plan whilst pregnant and now that I've finished breastfeeding, I'm looking at going back on to shift the baby weight. It's hard when DD2 is still a really bad sleeper though as I absolutely crave carbs when I'm so tired, but i need to get it sorted for my health.
