Gorging and emotional eating

Work, money worries and my kids cause me stress and i hit the cupboards. Today I have had 2 packets of crisps, a twirl, 5 mini sausage rolls, flapjack and half a chocolate orange alongside meals.

I see food as a treat but also panic when I'm stressed and eat. Help

Are you eating proper food as well?
3 square meals ?
Protein, vegetables daily?
Drinking plenty of water?
Unless you have a balanced diet you body will crave high sugar food.
There is nothing wrong with the food you have described anyway.
Be kind to yourself
Dieting can be a form of abuse.

I hope you enjoyed them but tomorrow is a new day. I'm exactly like you and that's why I can't have any treats in the house. If I do anything can trigger me. What works for me is buying a tiny bar of chocolate as my sweet treat after a healthy meal.

Mounjaro. Honestly, it's stopped my binging in it's tracks. I feel so relieved I've some power back over it.

My bmi is almost 27 so not quite high enough for munjaro

Mine was worse when I was very tired (which most if the time). I'm on mounjaro now so it's much much better than it was. But used to eat for a couple of hours in the evening. The act of chewing / eating relaxes me. Before miunjaro, I did consider some sort of counselling as its purely emotional eating.

Things that helped were fasting (so no food at all after say 7pm). Also the mindset of - if you're going to snack / binge at least do it with healthier food. Celery and peanut butter, grapes, plain popcorn etc.

I hope you find something that works, it's horrible feeling out of control

This sounds like my typical day both the normal meals and the chocs and crisps. I'm not overweight though. Every time o eat savoury I have to have something sweet afterwards. I think we have 'slight ' disordered eating... I'm happy to keep accountable with you if you like?

Cerialkiller · 17/01/2025 06:34

It sounds like your are an 'abstainer' (as opposed to a 'moderator') you can't have one thing and leave the rest, you have to keep going until the packet/cupboard is empty or you physically can't eat anymore?

One solution to this is to simply not have this stuff in the house. If there are other people who need snacks then try to get things that you won't eat and they will.

I hate ginger and am meh about jelly so that is what we have in the snack draw. Ginger biscuits, jelly, rice pudding etc.

How are you getting on ? Have you got any strategies to help stop the gorge ? I'd say it was only a minor gorge though Blush

I did this, and am now almost completely binge-free.

  • I started journaling after binging. What triggered it, what I did, how I felt before, during, after etc.
  • Then I started to be aware during a binge. I would verbalise what I was doing, “I am buying this biscuits because someone was unkind to me at work and I fully intend on eating every single one as soon as I’m in the car”. And then I did.
  • After a few months, I was able to be conscious before the unwanted behaviour. “I am intentionally diverting to the garage to buy biscuits to make myself feel better. It’s not in line with my goals, but fuck it”.
  • And then the amazing first time - I articulated what I was feeling compelled to do but I did something different.

Took about a year, but now I abstain from my binge foods completely and I can’t remember the last time I binged on anything. Think it was early December? That’s after comfort eating about 5 or 6 days a week previously.
