What‘s the point?

I started the year at 65.5kg (I‘m 5 foot 6).

Have diligently done Dry January (was drinking 3 bottles of wine a week, plus all the snacking that comes with it).

Have also been fasting every single day- at least 16 hours, sometimes 18. I‘ve been weighing food and logging everything I eat. In the first week I averaged 1600 cals, this past week 1350. It’s been really easy, surprisingly so.

On Monday I weighed 64.2kg.

This morning- 65.2kg.

I‘m on day 17 of my cycle so not due on for a while. I’m so annoyed and wondering why I am bothering. Do I really need to reduce my calories even more? Or change my diet? I‘m trying to est normally so it’s easier to stick to.

Yesterday I ate:
salmon, pak choi, 60g noodles
one pitta bread, 50g Philadelphia, lots of carrot, cucumber and tomatoes
Activia yoghurt
2 small chocolates

  • 1047 calories
(some days I eat more to balance it out).

Has anyone got any advice?

It is literally 2 weeks into a new year I don’t think it’s been enough time yet to get frustrated about this it is likely water. I’m in the same boat and not seen a result yet but I lost a huge amount of weight last year and I am only trying to lose 4kg now so it’s going to be much harder and slower than it was when I was trying to lose 4stone. I am same height as you and similar size and this is a healthy weight so you will have to be patient if you want to lose more as it will be slow.

Don’t reduce calories further and add some exercise and try to find some joy in life

InkHeart2024 · 15/01/2025 07:41

Keep at it and weigh again at the end of the month. 2 weeks isn't long enough to determine how much fat you've lost.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 15/01/2025 07:44

Too soon to tell, you need to stick at it. I also think you need more protein.

gemdrop84 · 15/01/2025 07:48

I joined a gym doing a 6 week exercise programme. The scale hardly moved in all that time (lost 1kg) but we had to measure ourselves weekly and I lost 19 inches overall.
I've stayed on after the 6 weeks, have only lost 2kg but the inches are still reducing. I'm not as tired, muggy headed and am dealing with stress a lot better. My skin has improved a lot too.
I wouldn't focus too much on the scales but more how you feel, measurements and clothes fitting. Keep up the good work and see it as an investment in your future health.

Hibernatingtilspring · 15/01/2025 07:52

Weight loss takes time to show up on the scales, what we often are told to think of weight loss/gain (eg after a heavy weekend, or the first week of low carb) is not fat loss but changes to how much water we're carrying.
You will still have made an impact but it's a process that takes months not two weeks.

Musicofthespheres · 15/01/2025 07:53

With respect, the more you cut calories, the more your body will adjust and conserve energy. You have to eat smarter. Lower carb, plenty of protein. A new way of life not a diet.

Chill

Yep this.

Stop weighting yourself if that's bothering that much. Your weight is within the normal range so it's also normal that it doesn't start dropping after just a couple of weeks.

Nomoreitsnothappening · 15/01/2025 07:57

When I finally decided I was going to loose weight and stick to it I decided not to weight myself so that I didn't get despondent. I started on the 1st may a few years ago and I remember mid June suddenly realising that I needed a size down in my jeans. That then became my motivation (I've dropped from a 14/16 -6). I still don't know how much I weight. But not having the numbers in my head every week (which especially for women will fluctuate) took away those 'what's the point' moments for me.

Upfeed · 15/01/2025 10:10

Thanks all. I think I was being a bit dramatic this morning!!

When I‘ve done IF before the weight fell off, but now I’m nearly 40 so I guess it won’t be so easy.

I do feel less bloated, my skin is brighter and I have a lot more energy. It’s a bit too easy for me to get hung up on the numbers, I should concentrate on the other positives too.

I‘ll aim for more protein too.

I was in a similar position and at my wit’s end. I took up weight training and over a year have lost a stone and a half. I also dropped breakfast and do 12000 steps a day.

But it’s actually shocking how little I can eat without gaining weight.

Why do you want to lose weight? You're not overweight

Some of us still are not at the target we want

mine is 63kg and I got to 65 then gained 2kg through illness so I am still in weight loss

i was 99kg to start with!

LizzieandFreddie · 15/01/2025 19:04

Well done, that's a lot of weight. But what do you base your target on?

I guess from my point of view my usual weight was at the higher end of the BMI healthy weight range or just into overweight. So being anywhere in the BMI healthy range seems ideal to me.
I hope I don't sound argumentative, I'm just wondering

I‘m the heaviest I‘ve ever been, all my clothes are tight.

I don’t want to buy a wardrobe of new clothes, I want to fit back in my old ones. And most importantly, I don’t want my weight to keep creeping up. I‘d rather do something now and only have 5kg to lose.

Well a size 10 is a bit snug on the thighs and a size 12 drowns me in the waist so I am just aiming for a comfy size 10 which I think will be around 10st

I bought clothes in 10’s they do fit me but they could fit better, and No point struggling with finding a size or buying more clothes if I can just drop a couple more pounds to wear clothes I already own. I only have 7-8lbs to lose now. I don’t care visually as much but the sizing has been annoying me for a while now. It’s not visual or BMI based anymore just how I feel. I don’t think another half a stone will be all that visible on my body likely in all honesty no one else will notice. The BMI will be 22/23 so not low?

I had other targets along the way. my original was 70kg but it was right at the top of my BMI range with NO wiggle room, one short holiday would tip me straight back into overweight so I thought it better to aim for a middle area.

Clothes sizing is annoying no one wants 2 different sets of clothes either

it is better to just have 5kg to lose but it is slow. When I was 99kg it just dropped straight off me to start with

LizzieandFreddie · 15/01/2025 22:51

@Upfeed and @Jaderz
I never thought of the clothes angle. I have boxes of clothes in different sizes under my bed bought at various times in my life🙄

Wittow · 15/01/2025 23:00

So what if you have different sizes of clothes?! It's a label with a number on it. Just buy what fits. Most people are different sizes in different shops. Annoying but true.

You're not remotely overweight now. Chill a bit. Drink water. Eat 80/20 healthy. Lift some weights.

Because if you already own an entire wardrobe of clothes in a particular size, it’s quite expensive to replace them all with a bigger one. Too expensive for many.

Jaderz · 16/01/2025 07:29

Is throwing all the clothes you like out and buying new ones more or less extreme than just dropping a few lbs to fit into them? It’s not like she will be underweight it’s a range of weight. BMI has a large range. Plus people can pick whatever weight they want to be it’s up to them.

can anyone explain what the problem is with doing what you want with your own body

Upfeed · 22/02/2025 20:29

Just checking in to say, I took your advice and chilled out, stuck with it, upped my protein and this morning weighed in at 62.4kg! My trousers are fitting better and my stomach looks flatter.

I’m so glad I didn’t let my dramatics get the best of me!
