Obese Walking to fitness

Right this is for everyone out there whose done only limited / no exercise in 2024, not yet ready for starting 0-5K training, but who wants to get a bit fitter and lose a few pounds along the way.
I did the 0-5 k a few years ago but never managed to get beyond 8 / 9 weeks, as it suddenly jumped up from a few minutes of running, to several mins, I wasn't ready for the jump, got disheartened and gave up🤦‍♀️.
So my plan is to walk everyday, I'm setting myself SMART goals, so tomorrow, despite the predicted rancid weather, I plan to walk 4,000steps (approx two miles for my stride). Plan to do this for just over week, then add 1,000 steps each week starting 13/1/25. Once I get to 10,000 steps, I'll start walking a bit faster, and add more hills into the mix my goal is to be able to start 0-5K after Easter, so I join my dc with doing Park runs.
Go at your own pace this thread is for support and motivation Smile

I would love to join!

Dolamroth · 31/12/2024 22:00

Can I join? I've been for a walk for the last week, every day (1.5 hours don't know how many steps) but feel I'm on a roll now! Planning to keep it going until back to school and then carry on doing as much as I can. Thought I would go for a swim if the weather is too crap to walk!

Thewhisperingwindsofwinter · 31/12/2024 22:02

Can I please join. I love walking find it relaxing. I did get into walking daily but that's slipped away over December.

JC03745 · 31/12/2024 22:05

I used to walk km's every day due to work. I now have arthritic knees, then plantar fasciitis for 18mths. I'm in a different job, but WFH and have put on weight. I too would like a resume being fitter and walking again.

Another option is walking in a pool- just a shallow one, usually at knee height. The water helps take the pressure off joins and strengthens different muscles to normal walking.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 31/12/2024 22:06

I'm in

eyestosee · 31/12/2024 22:07

Sounds fab. But with regards to running technique makes a huge difference. I thought I couldn't run before I saw this technique video.

I still go on walks though. It's a great exercise to do without making you feel overly tired.😁

Geppili · 31/12/2024 22:18

The amazing thing for me is that in spite of being overweight and not at all fit, when I do walk, it lifts my whole mood and attitude towards life.

thisyeariwillstopprocrastinating · 31/12/2024 22:22

Oh wow I thought this might be a tumbleweed thread!
Very welcome geppili, well done for your walking so far Dolamroth, great to have you thewhisperingwindsofwinter ( are you an author or poet?, your username is very evocative), oh ouch JC03745 walking in a pool is a great idea, I really hope 2025 sees your plantar fasciitis disappear, and the arthritis diminish. Great to have you raindropskeepfallingonmyhead fingers crossed we don't get too many raindrops falling on us as we start our walking!
It's so lovely to have some virtual company!
eyestosee thank you for the link, I'll watch it as soon as I can guarantee no interruptions!

Me too Geppili! I do enjoy it and always feel so much better afterwards, but it's just having the motivation and finding the time, but I really do need to make changes this year.

Sidling in to join you guys.

Fully support the just increasing walking to start witn- but if you do want to progress to running then take a look at none to run. It's got a small subscription fee but much better than c25k which went up too fast at about week 4 for me and left me demoralised.. N2R is a longer program with gentler increases.

Thewhisperingwindsofwinter · 31/12/2024 22:31

Not a writer or a poet. Saying that I did start writing a book during the crazy covid times think I wrote a few pages Grin

Its still sitting inside my laptop collecting virtual dust.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 31/12/2024 22:34

Yes please!

I had chronic fatigue a few years ago which totally killed my fitness and I gained stones and stones. I've been slowly getting fitter now I my CFS is fairly unsymptomatic, and I would like to go for longer walks with the dog and increase my daily step count. I think first stop for me is to reliably hit 5000 steps a day (I usually average 3.5 to 4.5).

Thank you, I'm more than happy to pay a subscription if it's a good app, and yes the NHS app definitely went into longer runs before I was ready.

Make 2025 your year of writing... you can do it... but can I bask in your reflected glory once you're famous and earning a fortune?!

Got to say from not being able to run to observing the technique in the video I posted I ran for half an hour straight off without stopping! It really does make a difference. Worth trying.

thisyeariwillstopprocrastinating · 31/12/2024 22:45

Thatagilegoldmoose CFS is absolutely horrible , well done for managing 3.5-4.5. Pace yourself carefully and don't put pressure on yourself. I really hope 2025 sees your CFS disappear completely.

Hi! I'm here to join 😊
The last few years have seen me gain 5st (it's horrible even writing it out) and I've been saying all month that I'm going to start walking!
I'm honestly terrible at sticking to anything so I'm going to really give it a go and hope this sticks!

MummytoBoth · 31/12/2024 22:53

Would love to join :-)

PotatoWafflerWrites · 31/12/2024 23:00

I'd love to join please. I used to walk a lot and have become so sedentary over the last few years following a change in job. Really look forward to starting tomorrow.

Jabtastic · 31/12/2024 23:05

I would love to join you all! I really need to increase my walking.

Editing to add that I'm disabled and so I won't set big step counts but rather focus on getting into a walking habit.

Iizzyb · 31/12/2024 23:15

I'm in too! I put 2 stones on after an accident 2 years ago & have never shifted it. I don't have any issues now except finding the time (crackers job and lone parent) but I have a plan.

My feet hurt at the moment because I've been wearing the same pair of casual boots for so many years and they're worn out (ds trainers are lovely and new obv!) but just ordered some new ones from Amazon. I'll be putting my walking trainers on for walks though.

Happy walking everyone x

LittleGreenDragons · 31/12/2024 23:45

*Sidles into thread and hopes for 2025 inspiration. Too much weight, too much pain, too much fatigue, too many excuses. I think that will be on my headstone. Good luck everyone 💪

healthybychristmas · 01/01/2025 00:26

I'm in! I've been on Mounjaro and lost 3.5 stone. Still got 1.5 to go and I'm spectacularly unfit! I will join you tomorrow.

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 01/01/2025 00:31

I’m putting on a shed load of weight through chemo. I walk on my good days and try to aim for 5k. I’ll get the weight off with exercise and continued healthy eating when treatment is done.

just to say all the best to you. I may look in when I can although my situation is currently a bit different.

just to say that a while back I did couch to 5k. I experienced the difficulties you had, @thisyeariwillstopprocrastinating on some of the weeks and just repeated them a couple of times until I was ready to level up. I also had to check that I wasn’t going too fast! I eventually ran a 10k (couldn’t do 1k now!).

take care and you’ve got this!
