Protein bar or porridge

Is a protein bar a bad idea to have as breakfast everyday if I’m trying to lose weight or should I stick with my bowl of porridge?

I'm thin and porridge is my favourite. Some protein bars can be very sugary.

I always have: hot lemon water
Protein shake with banana, raw spinach, oat milk and pulsin protein powder
Then either a healthy cereal or my trusty porridge.

Take a look at the ingredients in protein bars. Processed And full of chemicals

Wigtopia · 27/12/2024 22:18

I’d go with third option of eggs. Scrambled with wilted spinach, tomatoes and a bit of mozzarella 👌

What about these I’ve got some coming in my order tomorrow

You need to look at the ingredients not the description.

An omlette or Greek yogurt with fruit a nuts can be a good choice.

almonds, peanuts, dark chocolate coating (sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, fat-reduced cocoa powder, emulsifier soya lecithin, natural flavouring), fructo-oligosaccharides, honey, glucose syrup, rice crisps (rice flour, sugar, salt), cocoa mass, sea salt, emulsifier soya lecithin. (May contain: milk, other nuts).

This is an (ultra processed) sugary pudding not a breakfast. Honey and glucose syrup and sugar mentioned more than once?

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 28/12/2024 01:44

That’s not a protein bar. If you’re calorie counting it might be a good snack or substitute for chocolate or something.

PerambulationFrustration · 28/12/2024 02:03

Try some baked oats. You add yoghurt and eggs to oats (and a few other ingredients) which makes it higher in protein.
Cut it up and freeze it so it's more convenient.

I had no idea it contained all of that I’m surprised I thought it was just nuts and chocolate

If I ate that bar for breakfast I'd be hungry again very quickly. If I eat a bowl of porridge I'm happy for hours. Biscuits aren't helpful breakfast food for me.

Blakehouse · 28/12/2024 10:17

Try overnight oats. Greek yoghurt, porridge oats and frozen fruit on top. Do it before bed and put in the fridge. It will be perfect next morning

NigelHarmansNewWife · 28/12/2024 10:31

You should maximise food volume for the calories and macros. It'll be much more satisfying. Greek yogurt or Skyr with some fruit, e.g. berries, chopped apple. Eggs with some veg and seeded wholemeal bread (which is a good source of protein and fibre). Overnight oats. Those protein bars are a convenient way to get protein but they are full of other stuff making them no better than a chocolate bar in lots of ways.

Aparecium · 28/12/2024 10:35

I'd much rather have natural protein than frankenprotein - which is generally laden with sugars and sugar substitutes.

Porridge is often touted as the best breakfast, but I'm hungry by mid-morning if I have just that for breakfast. A protein-rich breakfast OTOH keeps me going until lunch, easily. Add eggs, for example.

If you want protein on the run, go for nuts (almonds are excellent) or cheese (prepackaged portions, or cubes in a little tub).

I feel like such a tart now - I thought that word meant something else (silly woman). Let’s pretend it does
