Can you recommend me a low fat meal replacement bar or shake please?

I have recently lost 3/4 stone mainly due to gallbladder issues.
I had the most horrendous attack last weekend and I am really worried about eating now. I wondered if I could use some meal replacement bars or shakes to get through this as any chance of an operation is a waiting game.

So anything low fat. It's a bit of a minefield the world of shakes!

Try Protein Works - they're my favourite. They do protein and meal replacement shakes and meals.

Can you not stick to low fat food?

my sympathies, gallbladder pain is horrific.

Why? Ultra-processed shakes or bars which are likely to exacerbate digestive issues. We now know most of the additives, including emulsifiers are involved dysruption of the gut.
Hit the vegetable aisle at the supermarket. Have rolled oats for breakfast. Make sure to include viscous fibre rich food such as eggplant and okra which are helpful in dealing with the fats.
You are not helping your body by turning to artificial food.

I was going to recommend a protein shake, and then I realised the above person is correct. I had a period of taking shakes, I lost a lot of weight (fast) but then as soon as I finished the diet the weight goes on again.

The protein shakes are great, but they don’t teach you how to change your basic diet to form long-lasting weight loss. It doesn’t show you portion control or healthy eating.

If you want a good shake, I used ‘Protein World’ shakes, and I lost about 2 stones on them. Then I put about a stone back on because I was so hungry and didn’t know how to control my portion sizes afterwards! Also people commented about how pale I was, and I was so dizzy.

Obviously, your choice!

Most 'low fat' or 'low sugar' bars are full of rubbish and artificial sweetners.

Can you make up your own meal replacements with good fats, I thought that there wa some evidence that good fats like nuts and olive oil or fish oils arent quite as bad for gallbladder issues. I have gallstones but admit I hav a really high fat diet, I think im treading on thin ice but try to make sure its good fats (failing at this time of year to be honest).

And why do you need meal replacements, is it for when you're on the road or something?

Andtheworldwentwhite · 25/12/2024 14:04

I sympathise I have a bad gallbladder as well. All I eat now are veg fruit and turkey slices. It sucks. But honestly I wouldn’t try the shakes. They have so much sugar in them

Meant to add I can have iced gems!!!!! Sad but that makes me happy.

That's everyone, I thought it might just give my digestion system a rest but realise it's probably not ideal. I probably stupidly thought it would have the nutrition I needed in it to replace a meal.

I have made some lentil and veg soup and will have this. Luckily I love veg but I also love food that is bad for me.

I think if you eat soup that is very good for giving digestion a rest, lentils are very gentle but really good for you, use chicken stock for nutrition. You could add some protien powder in the liquid.

Thanks for the chicken stock tip. I do tend to use veg stock so will swap that out.

I'm not familiar with that condition but I'd hard boil a load of eggs at the start of each day, always have some avocados in and frozen blueberries in the freezer and buy manchego cheese to cut into cubes that sort of thing so you can eat nutritious, tasty food without eating big meals. I used to make a smoothie with a small amount of almond butter, pea protein powder, milk and a frozen banana which is delicious.

Heaps of leafy greens and salads with some forkfulls of canned tuna or crumbled egg..

Firestorms · 26/12/2024 08:45

When I was in your situation I drank quite a few mockingbird smoothies.

Andtheworldwentwhite · 26/12/2024 16:48

Don’t give up totally. Lots of things affect some people and both others. I can have chocolate cake and croissants but cannot have the yolk of the egg. It sucks doesn’t it. I have another scan after Xmas. Hoping they will say it needs to come out

Vegemite123 · 26/12/2024 17:03

Have a look at Jane plan , or Cook’s low calorie options. They both need bulking out with veggies, but might be better options than shakes.

I would recommend next time you have a really bad attack, go to A&E. I know it sounds dramatic, and a waste of time (both yours and theirs) becuae you know what the pain is, but pain you cannot manage at home is an emergency. It could be an infection in the gall bladder that needs treating, and the gall bladder can rupture which is obviously very dangerous. I followed this advice when I had pain that surpassed what I'd had before and I was desperate for help as it wasn't going away after several hours (and what I'd had before was utterly excruciating, but this was next level), it is what the consultant told me to do, and 2 weeks later I had my gall bladder out at a weekend. My local hospital runs that particular surgery at weekends as it's relatively simple and there's so many people that need it. There were 6 people in that day having it done! Presenting at A&E with bad attacks bumps you up the list past people who are just having intermittent discomfort - which was me for several years.
