Scale issue or not losing?!

I bought a Salter glass cale, seemed decent brand and type, and it is supposedly accurate to 0.1kg.

And yet it will give me the same weight for days on end. I can even drink a litre of water, which should be a kg, over the morning and it will still be the same. It takes a noticeable loss to finally go down 0.5kg.

It clearly has a memory of some sort, but nothing seems to really reset it. I step on it lightly and get it to go to zero, then weigh again, but it still remembers! Or I can weight something light, and it seems accurate enough, but I get back on, and it's still the same.

It's frustrating, as I hoped I'd be motivated by at least seeing a little daily loss, or even a bit of up and down over the week, rather than risking just weighing once a week and finding I've not lost anything then. I know weighing daily isn't ideal in some ways, but I wanted the motivation of even losing 0.2 or 0.3 kg.

I am walking 5K every morning, jogging 3.5K three times a week, cycling 24k every fortnight or so. Small healthy meals, few treats, hungry a lot but resisting, mostly lowish carb, lots of water. Clothes feel looser, and I have been losing a bit, but not as much as I expected for the efforts I've put in! I don't know if I'm just plateauing or what. I was 82kg in July and now 75.6kg which is not really a lot (5'4"). I don't think I've gained much muscle, though it could be a small effect.

But I'm sure some of it is to do with the scales not showing any losses for ages. Any idea how to get it to properly forget the previous weight every single time and actually calculate a new one? It's not a fancy scale, no apps, no analysis, etc, just plain old digital weight shown.
Or do I just need to buy a new scale, maybe an old fashioned mechanical one - but I never quite trust the readings on those because it's hard to tell if it's absolutely at zero, etc.

What model are the scales? I don't think anyone can advise on any possible memory functions without knowing more about the actual scales.

BlossomToLeaves · 28/11/2024 14:47

They are like this:
https://www.johnlewis.com/salter-led-digital-bathroom-scale/phantom/p3319169?s_ppc=2dx_mixed_home_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMInt3piKL_iQMVOptQBh0OVCScEAQYAiABEgILj_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

But I'm not really thinking that it is actually a feature of the scale officially, more that it's just something that scales with memory functions seem to do maybe, just seeing if anyone has experience using them and informally managing to reset them - or if it's more that this is how digital scales tend to be. Or if I really am not changing weight day to day!

Those scales don't have any kind of memory function and so won't have any capacity to store any weight at all. They won't have any kind of internal memory storage.

If they correctly weigh large items successfully and consistently then they will do the same with you.

BlossomToLeaves · 28/11/2024 15:14

It's so odd though, that it never changes. Drinking, eating, whatever, day to day, so if I'm really not losing or gaining anything, it's frustrating. Maybe they are actually not working properly somehow, but yet they do seem to weigh other items. And if I lose enough, it eventually shows, but like by 0.5kg or more. Strange. Maybe I just need to get mechanical ones that are better quality than my old ones, but I really thought this would be a better idea!

I found by downloading an app and inputting weight useful (happy scale- can use for free). I hover around the same weight for 7-10days then have a loss suddenly of maybe anywhere between 0.4-1kg. It then stays static for another week or two. It's let me see that there is an actual pattern, and now I don't get disheartened if things haven't changed for a few weeks.

I weigh myself every day and have gone from 97kg to 73kg (similar height to you) since Jan. you've done well to get where you are OP, just be consistent with what you're doing as it's working!

Sia8899 · 28/11/2024 15:39

Have you tried testing the scales by holding something you know the weight of e.g. a bottle of water or bag of sugar? Is there an option to calibrate them? I've had a look at the 1 star reviews and they're saying the same as you, unfortunately sounds like a fault with some of them

BobbyBiscuits · 28/11/2024 15:41

I've a similar salter one and I don't think there's any memory function. It's pretty basic. It sometimes goes weird for me and keeps moving while your on it, then displays an error message. I just pressed the buttons on the back to fully reset it and it went normal again.
I'd say everyone's weight should fluctuate by around a kilo between morning and night. But maybe you should try and weigh yourself less often. Just twice a week first thing after a BM, naked. Your clothing should be telling you subtly that you're dropping weight or inches, so the scale isn't the be all and end all.

How many days has it stayed at the exact same weight? My weight often stays the same for about 5-7 days no matter what I’m eating or drinking.

Have you considered an additional scale?
This may seem like overkill but in addition to my digital renpho scales, I have mechanical scales which I like too as it gives me a clear view of my weight in stones and kg simultaneously.

Also it’s best to keep a track of progress through various measurements not just scale weight . I haven’t lost weight for 2 weeks but I’ve lost half an inch off my waist so clearly I’m losing fat.

My digital scales which cost around £20 also show things like body fat and bone density although of course since they’re not a DEXA scan they’re not 100% accurate but they do give some sort of indication.

Wow with all that exercise I'm imagine you're losing weight but putting on muscle.

GinForBreakfast · 28/11/2024 16:41

TBH you have lost nearly 7kg in 5 months. That is pretty damn awesome.

Are you measuring yourself as well as weighing?

BlossomToLeaves · 28/11/2024 18:58

Thanks all. I'm not measuring specifically, but my belt is going up a notch and my jeans are a bit loose now, which is good. I've been dieting fairly hard and doing all this exercise, though that only started about 2 months ago at this level, and I just kind of hoped it would be a bit more actual loss on the scale by now.

Maybe it is a fault with the scale to some extent, if other reviews are saying similar. I hadn't really looked at those yet as I figured a scale would be pretty straightforward, and it was a brand I'd heard of. It does measure small things and seems accurate, but it just has this weird thing of remembering my weight until there's a noticeable big change. I'll try resetting it with the buttons, or maybe I can take it back, but I've had it a couple of months now so probably too late for that. A mechanical scale might be a good back-up I guess, though I am not sure I have room for two!
