Slow metabolism

Hi all. After years of complaining I must have slow metabolism (hence the weight gain) I got a health MOT and body composition analysis done this year and in actual fact do have ultra slow metabolism.

I've seen increasing exercise and water (both of which I'm doing) help. Has anyone else encountered this and any tips to increase? Thanks!

What does a health MOT and body composition analysis involve?

peonym · 25/11/2024 19:17

A number of things really - a heap of blood tests related to heart health, metabolic health, diabetes, thyroid, hormonal, digestive as well as body composition (muscle vs fat, BMI, where muscle / fat is located, metabolic rate etc)

How would I go about having one of these tests .Thank you.

It's unlikely to be through your GP, so you'll either need to self fund or if you have good health insurance (through work or otherwise) they might foot the bill. We used Randox, I would recommend.

Usually the heavier someone is the higher their metabolism because it takes more energy for a larger body to function than a smaller one. Those with more muscle mass will have a higher metabolism.
I've always used tdee and bmr to work out where I'm at. How does the analysis you've had done compare to a basic bmr or tdee calculation?

I should add that say if someone weighs 55kg and has a high muscle mass compared to average then they will have a faster metabolism than someone who weighs 55kg and has less muscle.

Thanks for this - yes absolutely they pointed to extra fat slowing it all down and so the exercise should help with that, but I'm wondering if anyone has encountered any other tips. The online resources all match up with the analysis!

Well I thought I had a very slow metabolism but it turned out I had a serious vit D deficiency.
I had no idea this would have such an effect but once I started high dose supplements from gp I also started losing weight again!

halloumidippers · 26/11/2024 06:57

Fasting cardio in the morning (a brisk walk on an empty stomach) and then weight training. You don't need to go to the gym can just get a set of weights at home. Eat a small breakfast with plenty of water.

Idunno8 · 26/11/2024 07:06

Intermittent fasting increases metabolism as pp said. I stop eating at around 7:30pm and have a high protein lunch at around 2pm with a walk in between those times.

soupfiend · 26/11/2024 07:18

In the meant time while you're trying to get muscle mass up, you just have to eat to your metabolism if you want to lose or maintain weight. As you've said you've figured out your TDEE and BMR and you'll need to measure everything to see if it changes at all

Oh wow that's interesting! I'm glad you got resolved! I do have normal vitamin D apparently

That's helpful thanks as I usually do my workouts (Peloton) in evening. I might swap about.

I probably should be a lighter better at IF - thanks!

Yes thanks for this, am definitely losing weight so eating the right amount just would be good to increase metabolism alongside. Hopefully as the fat comes off that will happen and there's been some helpful tips here too.
