Unusual (safe) ways to lose weight

kateclarke · 16/11/2024 16:23

Have any of you tried to loose weight in a different way?
I have managed to lose 20kg this year by Going on walking holidays where I'm really careful what I eat and loosing weight and then eating at matinence when at home.
I'm hoping this will help me sustain my loss. Anyone else got any similar ideas?

Good idea! Where does one find a walking holiday, is there a particular company you use?

I don’t have an unusual method sorry, have been plain old calorie counting, but it does seem to work for me!

EmeraldRoulette · 16/11/2024 16:28

20kg is fantastic

but do the holidays have that big a role? It's more likely your daily life adjustments that did it. I'm inspired!

kateclarke · 16/11/2024 16:29

There are companies that arrange them for you, but I just do it myself and get all the information I need from various Facebook groups.
It's been amazing and not just because I've lost weight.

Yes all the actual weight has been lost on the walks and when I'm home I just maintain what I have lost.

@kateclarke how many days have you done please?

Cerialkiller · 16/11/2024 16:33

I don't know if it's unusual be before my wedding I lost about 20lb by water fasting 3 whole days a week. Amazing how easy it is to get used to. Almost a relief not worrying about choosing what I'm eating. It made the food I did eat taste incredible too.

We went to Japan for 3 weeks and ate like kings but exclusively Japanese food. Lots of convenience food (rice meals from shops) traditional breakfast. Not trying to be healthy at all. I would have expected to gain a stone doing similar elsewhere but I lost a pound! We walked a fair amount and it was very hot and humid but we didn't do anything different enough for me to expect that!

kateclarke · 16/11/2024 16:36

@EmeraldRoulette I normally do between 12 and 19 days at a time depending on the route.
I'm currently sitting in bed eating chocolate and crisps in the middle of a 13 day walk. Hope to loose 3kg.

I've been reading about people who do the Camino de Santiago and it seems men usually lose weight from the exercise, but women either maintain or put on weight because of the food stops/restaurants.

I don't think I'm fit enough to be walking long distances every day unfortunately.

Has anybody done a bootcamp type thing?

showersandflowers · 16/11/2024 17:09

I had a busy life and the OMAD diet worked for me. It's one meal a day. But you can basically eat anything on that one meal (within reason). I lost very, very quickly. And always felt very full. I loved it. Pregnant now so can't do it but once I've delivered I'll start again (once no longer breastfeeding).

My dad used to swear that although he had a big breakfast, mountain top cafe lunch and several pints with dinner he always lost at least a stone whenever we went skiing.

ReadWithScepticism · 16/11/2024 17:24

For about 6 months earlier this year I was doing quite a lot of longer walks in preparation for the Yorkshire Three Peaks. I didn't realise how much good it was doing my weight/waistline until I stopped doing it. Not massive weight loss (because I am not really overweight, and because I am not at an age where the weight comes off very easily), but a sustained plateau about 2-3 kgs lower than at other times.

The lovely thing about lots of walking is that it doesn't really feel like exercise. It is just a way to spend the day. But it does so much good.

We did a c3 week trek to Everest Base Camp quite a few years ago. One of the chaps was quite big, he was visibly smaller by the end of the trek.

I lose weight on holiday (i do watch what I eat) as I am more active and not looking in the fridge as a distraction from work.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/11/2024 17:29

I expect this doesn’t really count, but I caught a horrendous D&V bug off my niece earlier this year.
three really awful days but I lost nearly half a stone overall!
yes it hurt. Yes it worked.

ScabbyHorse · 16/11/2024 18:57

I lost two stone hitchhiking through Europe when I was in my 20s..

Travelling in the developing world, unrequited love and dental surgery are my top tips.

StMarie4me · 16/11/2024 21:05

Used to lose half a stone clubbing in the early 80s!

Couldn't eat after my 1st husband left. Became very skinny. Only time in my life trauma has put me off food. I am normally a comfort eater.

I had Campylobacter and lost nothing! My Dr was mystified

I had this with Covid, kept it off for a while, but it crept back up eventually.

A botched attempt at taking out my wisdom tooth left me on a liquid diet for a while. Not recommended.

EricInk · 17/11/2024 09:03

@Twoshoesnewshoes same Grin

When DC1 started school i'd finished breastfeeding my other DC so the weight crept on but it was kept down in the first year by repeated D&V episodes caught I'm guessing from them. Our immunity is much stronger now and I'm more pudgy as a result

FergussSingsTheBlues · 17/11/2024 11:18

I can highly recommend sorting out portion control issues by getting tasty ready meals from M&S - I did this for a month then switched to normal healthy food - lost a stone!

Edited

I ejected from both ends for around 24 hours, then I ate very little for about a week and most of it passed through. Then I was limited in what I ate for around a month . This was post dodgy chicken
I lost no weight AT ALL

Wishfives · 17/11/2024 11:26

@Hoppinggreen basically the same, I couldn't keep water down to the point of nearly being hospitalised!

YearningForAWinteryWinter · 17/11/2024 12:29

Op this sounds fascinating. You should do a blog about your walking holidays. I'd love to hear more about where you went, how you organised it, what you ate.

kateclarke · 17/11/2024 19:40

@YearningForAWinteryWinter I have thought about a blog but I can't quite get myself together to make any notes whilst I'm away, it genuinely ruined my whole day thinking about it.
