Long fast - opinion question

If you were attempting a long fast (30-40 hours) and around 24 hours in you were really struggling (headache, dizzy, ravenously hungry, irritable, shaking) would you:

  1. Have a proper meal
  2. Have a tiny something to tide you over (a piece of fruit or portion of carrot or something)
  3. Keep going till you reached at least the first target (at least 30 hours)

Let's assume you've drunk loads, so having a hot or cold drink at this point isn't going to change how you're currently feeling physically.

Appreciate not everyone would attempt a long fast like this, but if you're going to vote/answer please imagine that you would and answer accordingly :) thank you!

Edit to add: if you fancy commenting with why you've voted how you did then that would be lovely!

I’ve done a few long fasts and by the 24 hour mark I no longer get shaky/dizzy type hunger, just hunger pangs which come and go.

I found a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of sparkling water helpful for dealing with hunger pangs when fasting.

I've done a few also, and don't usually feel like this but today I'm really struggling!!

Will give the ACV a go. Thanks.

Another idea is that it could the wrong time in your cycle to fast. Consensus seems to be that post ovulation your body needs the calories to build the corpus luteum. When Ive attempted long fasts during the luteal phase I’ve found it miserable, so I simply avoid it now and only fast during the follicular phase which is much easier for me to manage.

I've done lots of 96+ hour fasts

Listen to your body if the electrolytes etc that usually work aren't working then eat something. I didn't vote because I would eat a meal but would eat something small 45mins prior to reduce stomach upset (although now I think about probably not a problem after only 24 hrs)

Hope you feel better soon

If I was feeling like this and it wasn't just a passing moment (eg. In 10 minutes you feel fine) I would eat something small but low carb high protein to compliment the fast. A couple of scrambled eggs, cheese and cucumber, chicken meat etc.

I went with a light meal as I really was feeling woozy from head to toe which is not usual for me (and I do a 40-45 hour fast once or twice a week).

Feeling less shaky now and the headache has gone but it's definitely woken the hunger monster. I am at the end of the luteal phase though so maybe that's why.

Thanks for the replies :) this is such a handy forum

I have done 3 day fasts (only water). If I ever felt dizzy or shaky I would stop the fast.

When I fast (a couple of times a year) I choose a time when I don’t have to drive or have only a very short drive and am home alone so I can rest as much as I like, read and focus on myself.
