I need some diet ‘mantras’

I am at least two stone overweight. I eat well normally through the day, but the evenings are my absolute downfall. I need to break the cycle / cravings.

This may sound ridiculous but I want to write down a few things on a card - you know almost like prompts when you do a speech -
something for me to stop and read when I’m about to grab a handful of sweets from the kitchen.

I know all the don’t have it in the house etc but this is my issue, there’s no need for everyone to suffer!

So help me with a list of pause and think bullet points? has anyone done anything like this or can suggest things?

I have prove them all wrong as my screen saver on my phone. This works for me as I'm really petty and a lot of people where against the way I dieted. Also having a photo of you at your biggest and what you wanna look like again helps

I'm looking after myself.

I'm lovely.

I find it helpful to have a hot drink when I get the desire to munch, especially a savoury hot drink like Marmite, Bovril, or stock.

What about something like

My body deserves good nutritious food.

It's weird that our version of a "treat" is something that is really bad for our body. And a treat isn't something full of vitamins that helps us feel better and live longer.

On your point about the rest of the house not being made to suffer… no one should really be eating sweets on a regular basis. Look at it more as looking after your family’s health rather than depriving them of something.

Love if nothing changes, then nothing changes. I'm gonna use that one

soupfiend · 19/10/2024 13:25

I can tolerate feeling a bit hungry, I can wait until my next meal

CaramelEmporium · 19/10/2024 13:27

If nothing changes is a good one.

What is it about the evenings that’s so hard!? it’s like I go into a fugue sometimes. I’m not binging til I’m sick it’s more like I’ll pick thro the evening. So I’ll have main meal and it’s like I regard it as something to get past before the evening snacking commences, toffees, crisps, oooh maybe a biscuit now. I’m eating so many calories post 6pm.

Stick this on the fridge: "I can, but I won't."

CaramelEmporium · 19/10/2024 13:28

@WiserOlderElf I suppose what I’m saying is DH can buy a 4 pack of crunchies and it’ll last him a month. He shouldn’t have to hide stuff or not have it in the house because I lack self control.

Imperfect action is better than no action.

e.g. a handful of crisps is better than the whole bag. Two sweeties are better than 20.

redtrain123 · 19/10/2024 13:32

Don’t have the cakes and sweets in your house, or only at weekends. Buy better quality fruit - you’re more likely to eat it if it tastes good.

One mantra I have is ‘If I eat that cake, am I going to remember it?’ If no, it’s not worth eating. If yes, then I may partake.

KnickerlessParsons · 19/10/2024 13:33

"A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips"

Or Kate moss's
"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"

Neither work for me though 🤷🏼‍♀️

Everythingaches · 19/10/2024 13:42

Clean your teeth after your evening meal.
calorie count and portion out a snack of 200 calories.
try HALT, am I hungry, angry, lonely, tired? What emotion am I feeling that’s making me want to eat?
you are bigger than your emotions and can change your brains reactions and your habits.

sorry none of those mantras!

Sahmcharlie · 19/10/2024 21:04

If you like too graze all evening i find allowing yourself safe foods like a punnet of grapes or pop corn, carrot sticks to be a great alternative which allow you to snack away but without loads of calories!

as for quotes my favourite ‘be kind to your body- its the only place you HAVE to live’
