Fat shamed by mother

My mum just rubbed my belly and asked when I was due. I knew I had gained weight but this just makes me feel awful. I'd never do that to my daughter, what gives her the idea this is ok? She's 74.

Thank you! Maybe it's a generational thing?

Truly it isn't. I'm the same age as your mother and I wouldn't dream of saying something so hurtful to my dc. I generally find something to compliment when I see them.

I can't believe its the first time she's done it to be honest. Yes, it's fucking rude. But my DM (mid 80s) has spent years pointing out I've put weight on, as has MIL (roughly the same age).

They feel they have the right to criticise/make comments about you. It's not right, but it's extremely common with that generation I'd have said. They won't change.

My mum has taken to calling it flab. Which is a worse word for fat.

Last time I saw her she said "you'll look nice when you get rid of all of that flab"

😁I feel your pain!

My MIL told me 'You've put some beef on,' the last time she was here, which made me feel properly heifer like.

I think if someone touched my belly I'd punch them

This made me lol in the coffee shop I was standing in

Hahaha mothers say things to us that they would never say to anyone else. They've no boundaries.

My mother has said to me

"You have a pretty face. You just need to get rid of all that flab now"

"You'll look good at Christmas when you get rid of all that flab"

One time she said to me
"You look nine months pregnant"

Another time she said to me "you look like a little bowling ball!"

I'm laughing. I honestly don't even get annoyed anymore as I'm so used to her saying it. :) she has verbal diarrhoea

It's universal.

I remember that my boyfriend used to work with a woman who really was thin. I saw her. She was honestly a size 8.

He told me that she came into work and said that her mother had said that she was fat.
