Hi i have PCOS and joined weight watchers in july have managed to shift just over a stone but need to shift about another!! it worked really well but am not as enthusiastic as i was!! Its your mind set really though i think and how much you really want to shift the weight! ( also did slim fast when trying for dd lost about stone and half but it was v restrictive and i was starving all the time wouldn't really recommend it!)

I'm not dieting at the mo as I'm still pregnant but will need to lose 10 stones once I've given birth. I have PCOS (am hoping this may change after the birth) and find it exceedingly difficult to lose weight.

The low carb option doesn't work at all for me I'm afraid, the weight just doesn't budge. However, Slimfast really does work a treat and I personally didn't find it restrictive, in fact I found it good to know I had a chocolate shake every morning and bars at lunchtime, this way I didn't have to think about food as I knew what I was having...I'm also a chocoholic so this worked great for me. Slimfast is the only diet since having PCOS where I have lost more than 1 pound a week and I intend to go back to it as soon as I give birth.

If this doesn't work then I'll go on lighter life but I do consider that to be the last option, but also know it works for PCOS sufferers.

Good luck with it - Joe

Hi all, Joe, suprised lo-carb did not work as that is what the specialists now recommend for PCOS. Apparently its the insulin resistance that causes the PCOS and the way to address IR is via lo-carb diet, not Atkins stlye though!!

Must admit, if I keep off sugar I can maintain, and did lose a stone in a month on Slimming World red -days which are lo-carb, but it is so boring!! Like us all I am looking for the easy fix I suppose, but not out there yet:-(

Sorry, but Slimfast is a no-way on my list, I like food!! Thanks for your replies though.

I have PCOS and thought that I would never be able to conceive. I had always been on a diet and trying to lose weight. I had ds1 2.5yrs ago and lost 2.5 stone on WW. With ds2 who was born 8 weeks ago I immediately went back to my pre-pregnancy weight and have no weight to lose at all which is amazing for me!!

It is as though the pregnancies kickstarted something in me and PCOS doesnt seem to bother me anymore. I would recommend WW as it is easy and you dont restrict yourself with anything. You can have choc and wine......just count the points.

ocean · 07/01/2005 14:45

How long did it take to lose 2.5 stone?

Ds was born in April, I started WW in July and lost the weight by January.

I find losing weight is sometimes mind over matter. You have to get it into your head as it isnt always about food and being hungry.....it is more about how you feel and mood swings etc

Hi Ocean, I've been with WeightWatchers since September and I've lost 22 lbs (still a long way to go though). I've found that it's quite flexible and I've been following Collette Harris' recommendations while keeping to WW points and although the weight is coming off relatively slowly I do lose every week, except once when I went over my points. I've had quite a good improvement in my symptoms too. Rather than go for low-carb, which I don't think I could handle for long, I've been cutting out refined carbs and basically following a GI approach. So no sugar at all, brown/wholemeal everything (bread, rice etc), only a small amount of fat (olive oil), lots of fibrous veg and some protein with every meal.

I'm quite a foodie, and I decided from the outset that I wouldn't compromise on taste and enjoyment because keeping control of my PCOS is going to be a long-term thing and although there are some things that I still miss (like chocolate) in general I'm hugely enjoying the food that I'm eating now and I'm really feeling much better for it.

ocean · 09/01/2005 19:34

I think my problem is I want to lose it NOW!!! The thought of months of dieting is horrid, but I suppose I'll just have to bite the bullet and get on with it!!

Well don't think of it as dieting, think of it as changing your lifestyle. The thing is that you can't actually cure PCOS so if you lose lots of weight and then go back to your old eating habits then the symptoms will just come back.

To be honest, once I got over the withdrawal symptoms from sugar and chocolate and my blood-sugar and insulin levels settled down then I didn't miss sweet things much and I really enjoy the kind of food that I'm currently eating.
