Weight loss while pregnant

So I'm looking for advise on loosing weight while pregnant, I'm 5ft 7 and weigh a whopping 73.6kg, I didn't really think about it until today when someone told me I need to go on a diet multiple times and it's made me think I really do need to lose alot of weight, I was 59kg before pregnancy and slowly trying to gain a little more as I was in recovery from anorexia but the medication I'm on has caused significant weight gain in the 29 weeks I've carried so far. Please if anyone has any tips to lose at least 10kg as quickly as possible I'd greatly appreciate it, I can't stop replaying those words "you really need to diet" it's playing on my mind and the more it does the worse I feel, any tips on how much I could eat. I feel sick to my stomach I didn't weigh myself before as I didn't want to relapse, I know some weight gain is normal during pregnancy but what I've gained seems very excessive and has put my BMI to 25 which is overweight and I'm not comfortable with that, please help me with any tips you have at all I'd be so very greatful

Speak to your midwife about how you are feeling. It sounds like your previous eating disorder is influencing how you feel right now. They will be able to advise you best on weight management during your pregnancy.

Thank you, I will talk to my midwife when I next see her in 2 weeks time

BMI is not supposed to be used when you are pregnant! Your weight sounds healthy for your height and being 29 weeks. It is far better for your baby that you are at a healthy weight and gaining weight steadily than if you lose weight. Restricting your calories now will impact on the nutrition of your baby. Great idea to speak to your midwife. Please put the ignorant words of whoever said that to you out of your head!

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 06/10/2024 04:03

Please dont do anything before speaking to your midwife or GP. BMI doesn't work in pregnancy, it's not made for a body that needs to meet the nutritional needs of a growing baby. The person who told you you needed to lose weight has some seriously messed up ideas about weight in pregnancy. You're vulnerable to this because of your history, it's part of the voice in your head, please dont try to lose weight, speak to your midwife or GP or if you have a psychologist or other therapist you've seen in the past it might be good to contact them for support.

It sounds as if you are in the grip of anorexic thinking.

Please speak to your midwife and ask to be referred for specialist help.

You can’t use BMI calculations during pregnancy, of course you will put on a certain amount of weight, and you won’t be able to loss it during the pregnancy, it’s all related to the baby including the placenta, fluid, extra blood etc. please speak to your midwife about this, as you really shouldn’t be restricting calories or nutrients at the moment.

So you are 29 weeks pregnant, still only weigh 74kg and want to lose 10kg while pregnant?

74kg is a perfectly normal weight for your height and isn't a high weight at all while pregnant.

What you need to do is call your GP or your midwife and ask for urgent prepartum psychological support, as it sounds like your eating disorder is doing the talking at the moment.

InfoSecInTheCity · 06/10/2024 06:20

Your BMI pre-pregnancy was 20 which is right on the borderline of healthy and underweight.

You have gained weight during pregnancy because you have a whole other person and a load of amniotic fluid inside you.

What idiot were you speaking to who repeatedly told a 29 week pregnant woman she needed to lose weight? Can you lose that person from your life because it doesn't sound like they are good for you?

MellowHelper · 06/10/2024 16:35

Unfortunately I'm not able to lose the person who said it as they're part of my partners family and are all very close with each other. I am going to be limiting contact as much as humanly possible though. I appreciate all of your kind comments of support I will be contacting my GP tomorrow morning and asking for some extra support to help with my mental health and to prevent a relapse from happening, I appreciate the outside points being given as its been helpful, I'll be eating as I have been and concentrate on growing my beautiful little human rather than my self image, thank you everyone ❤️

I want to reassure you that I started my last pregnancy at 60kg and went up to 95kg while pregnant... after delivery I dropped to 85kg immediately and then the rest came off over the next year. At 9 months post partum I was still 75kg so I really focused on healthy eating and by the time my daughter was about 14/15 months I was back to 60kg. I even had a lot of excess skin from the sudden weight loss but this quickly firmed up.

I also was anorexic in my past (I'm almost 6 foot so 60kg was pretty light) and I think it's just the way your metabolism can be after recovery. Pregnancy was the first time in my life it felt important to eat and my body was used to a lot less food and so the kgs piled on.

I'm pregnant again, only about 9 weeks and have already put on about 6kg. But pregnancy is not a time to diet, trust me. You have alllll the time in the world to diet. What you should do is focus on healthy eating and getting what your baby needs. Once you have a toddler and they want to be outdoors all the time, trust me the weight will come off!

Solidarity. Having anorexic thoughts in pregnancy is a nightmare and something very often confused for vanity or a lack of care for your baby and it's not.

Speaking to your GP tomorrow sounds like a very good plan OP, I’m glad you’re going to do that to look after yourself.

SabreIsMyFave · 06/10/2024 17:04

73.6kg is a 'whopping' weight at 5 ft 7?! Confused (11 and a half stone.)

I'm sorry you have struggled with an eating disorder in the past, but I think you need to speak to someone about why you think like this. You don't need to be on a diet when you're pregnant! Just eat normally @MellowHelper
