Dp is not losing weight on Mounjaro

I need to lose about 4-5 kg to be my ideal weight but that is all that's left for me.

Dp needs to lose 30-40 kg still and is obese and qualified for Mounjaro. He is a tall man, about 196cm, and all his weight is on his belly. His arms and legs look normal.

He used to drink far too much so he has completely stopped drinking. He's eating less than he was before but still a fair amount though his BMR gives him a total of around 2170 calories

He is 6 weeks into Mounjaro and he has not lost 1lb. Despite not drinking at all in that time (and I think he was easily polishing half to a full bottle of wine a night).

He is now so low about it he won't even talk to me about his weight. Is this normal though? Should he have seen some weight loss by now?

Fruit really isn't that bad for you, yes they are high in sugars but as long as you to stick to whole fruits you can't go wrong. Stop making fruit out to be evil ffs. Fruit is low in calories, high in fibre and full of nutrients.
Yes it has sugar but as its not a refined sugar you won't get a sugar spike like you would from a bar of chocolate for example, due to the fibre contents x

He's not getting any suppression yet - but he is 6 foot 5 and a big bloke. I suspect it may kick in when he gets to the higher dose!

@DevilledEggsies 2000 is not high for a 6ft 5 man! It's really not healthy to be suggesting that people should be existing on sparrow calories.

OP I'd encourage as others have said, for him to track for a week or two just to get an idea of what he's eating. Most of us consume far more calories than we think we do. When cutting out alcohol many people find that their appetite increases initially (especially for sweet food - alcohol is high in calories) and it takes a while for that to settle.

If he's really not willing to track calories at all (and Id question whether that's denial, unless he's worried about ED/becoming obsessive which would be valid) then an alternative could be a couple of simple rules. Eg 3 meals a day, decent amount of protein in each meal, majority whole foods, and eating the protein & veg first. Focusing on eating more protein and more fibre for most people 'displaces' some of the more calorie dense foods that are easier to overeat.

bakewellbride · 02/10/2024 11:00

He is probably still overeating. I lost 5 pounds in nearly 5 days last week completely unintentionally and I'm already slim so can't really afford to lose much more. If he eats less the weight will budge, it's just a fact. The effort has to come from him.

caringcarer · 02/10/2024 11:08

He needs a higher dose. The low doses are to get his body used to the drug. He needs to go up to 7.5 for his next pen then 10mg for pen after that. He should start to lose weight on 10mg. Extra walking is good. Tell him not to get despondent just increase his pen next order.

That'll be it.

A 6ft 5" body is going to need a bigger dose than 5ft 3" body..

Tell him not to lose heart. Once he's on a 10mg or 12.5mg dose he'll most likely see better results.

WeAllHaveWings · 02/10/2024 11:23

Agree with many others.

It is so easy to have unseen calories hiding in food, he needs to track for a month every single thing he is eating and drinking, weighing portion sizes to see what his chosen calorie deficit truly looks like.

MJ is just a tool to make staying in calorie deficit easier, he still needs to change his diet and to do that he needs knowledge of what he is eating to make the right choices.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 10/12/2024 11:22

How is he doing now?

CupOfSoup · 10/12/2024 13:58

Much better thanks - he needed to get to the 10mg dose and the weight starting falling off him so much so that they thought he was losing too quickly!

Oh wow! Glad to hear its working for him! It seems to work differently for everyone.

I've got more weight to lose than him 😳. But hoping to start next year and reading everyone's stories is helping.

I would love to do it with support but will be buying it and doing it hopefully with support from these threads!

CupOfSoup · 10/12/2024 16:17

yes don't lose hope whatever you do - especially if it takes a bit of time. He is also tracking his calories now (despite not wanting to at first) but I agreed to do it with him so it's become a joint effort which I think is helping.

He is staying on 10mg because he is losing enough on that, he doesn't need any 'extra' help if that makes sense. I think 40kg gets dp out of the obese category so he still needs to lose a bit more than that but this was his first target. He's lost about 15kg already (but that only really started coming off in the last 4 weeks and before that, there was nothing - it's like his metabolism took about 6 weeks to change and kick in!).

I needed to read this , so thankyou. I'm 2
Months in and am losing but it's super slow .
Like 1lb a week , and I'm 13stone 11 so plenty to lose , am peri menopausal though ( 46 )
Just ordered my 7.5 pen, but thinking won't start it until the new year ..

MounjaroUser · 10/12/2024 17:52

That's amazing news! I wonder whether it's because he's such a big guy that he needed a bigger dose?

CupOfSoup · 10/12/2024 18:15

yes @bugalugs45 we are both in our 50s and it's definitely harder! I think it's about finding the right dose so it kicks in for you but I would definitely wait till after Xmas as if you find the right dose and eat badly, it can make you feel pretty awful. If he eats too much on the 10mg pen, he knows all about it (terrible nausea) and that's help put him off eating too much too. If he eats sensibly, it's absolutely fine and he has no side effects.

@MounjaroUser I think he definitely needed a larger dose but I also think he has been very obese for a long time and it just wasn't a quick transition going from over eating to eating a sensible amount to seeing the weight come off. I do think the older we are, the harder this transition seems to be. He really was not eating unsensibly for the first month or so and it just didn't seem to work but I think the legwork he put in then plus the calorie counting and the higher dose of Mounjaro has just meant everything is now working. And it's now a big incentive for him to keep going because he can (finally!) see it is working.

He hasn't been able to exercise because of the weight but even lifting 15kg off has made him able to walk further and a bit quicker and I think this will also start helping. He'd like to get on the rowing machine as that will be easier on his legs and he's targeting that in January (when his tummy has hopefully got a bit smaller). He had the typical male pattern weight all around his stomach - no weight on his legs/arms but all on his stomach (not being rude to him but he would admit he looked more pregnant than a woman at full term it was so large).

He's really got into soup making. I bought him a soup maker (he loves tech) and he makes a soup with lots of vegetables and beans or lentils for lunch every day. I feel so much healthier just from eating all these different veg. Fingers crossed it all continues and good luck to you both! I really hope it works for you.

Feeling rubbish today. My gp changed me from semiglutide tablets to mounjaro in March, because although my hba1c dropped a lot, i wasnt losing weight. Now it's been 4 weeks on 2.5mg, and 6 on 5mg Mounjaro. The pharmacist called me today to say they won't increase the dose because I've not lost any weight nor have my hba1c reduced. In fact they have increased slightly. I now need to see a diabetes team to discuss options. I've read everywhere that higher doses are sometimes what's needed. Im 100kg, 50yrs old, menopausal, and been overweight my whole adult life. I have arthritis in my hip and back , waiting for a hip replacement, which they won't do til I lose weight. Unfortunately I am in constant pain and exercise is impossible. My mental health is suffering. I feel like I'm the only one in the world that this medication isn't working for.
