Why wouldn't you take weight loss drugs?

Seems like the whole world is taking them.

I'm occasionally tempted but worried about the long term effects... what would put you off?

I considered this option.. until my friend ended up seriously ill and had her gall bladder removed. A couple months on she now also has very severe pancreatitis and is not at all well. Guess what - she lists loads of weight on those injections spent a fortune and her life is now very much in danger.

LissaGa · 09/09/2024 20:20

I think these weight loss jabs are just another money spinning fad in the dieting industry. I would be wary of injecting myself with a drug that has known side effects and the fear of having to continue the injections in order to maintain a healthy weight sounds quite disconcerting. I know it suppresses appetite hence the weightloss, but where's the education around eating healthily and exercising? There's more to life than being a tiny size 8.

That’s very interesting. Are the doctors linking the issues with the weight loss injections?
Sorry to hear she’s unwell, regardless of the cause.

Are you 71 and have had fucking loads of cosmetic surgery? If not, your fears of looking like Sharon Osborne are likely unfounded.

Sharon is only 71. She’s had a lot of cosmetic surgery.
Those 2 things do not make you very thin. I don’t think Sharon is well and I really don’t think it’s caused by diet pills.

rockingbird · 10/09/2024 07:34

@JudyBlumesBlubber it's been mentioned yes, she was perfectly well beforehand. I feel we will see more of these kind of illnesses in time.

But if you’re disabled there sadly isn’t that option. I would love to be able to go to the gym or a run around the park. But my body thinks otherwise

Babbahabba · 10/09/2024 16:30

I would if I could but my BMI is too low (although overweight) which is frustrating as I have been much heavier and always fear putting on the weight again. My current weight isn't healthy and does impact me.

Thistooshallpass24 · 10/09/2024 19:56

It's interesting seeing so many opinions on this, when normally everyone is like yeah it's amazing!

PenelopePitStrop · 10/09/2024 20:20

For the same reason I don’t have tattoos, use Botox, or have piercings. I don’t do stuff to my body unless it is necessary for health.

I do get why others take it, and good luck to them.

RedHotChilliPreppers · 14/09/2024 09:30

I’m 10kg overweight as a result of ageing and a metabolism and basically over eating. I exercise a lot, but it doesn’t keep the weight off.

I’m also a bit of a health freak.

I don’t want to inject myself to lose weight, but I now feel pressurised by this, as I am overweight. I feel it in the same way that people around me go straight to Botox and fillers and then bask in the compliments. These are short fixes. I don’t see how these are any different to slimming pills.

If someone has very serious weight and health issues then I think they are a good thing. If you are getting the injections because you are 2 stone overweight and lacking in willpower then I think you are risking your health. They aren’t risk free. I’ve seen lots of people get vaccinations then develop inflammation and now I won’t get any vaccinations unless necessary.

I really enjoy food and eating, it’s a pleasure in life but I don’t really get what people mean by ‘food noise’ like I’m not obsessed with my gut 24/7!

id be embarrassed to admit it if I took them so would have to lie but!

im not particularly overweight and can lose if I need to by counting macros and exercising.

i wouldn’t want the side effects and there’s better things to spend my money on.

It's just thinking about food constantly and wanting to eat constantly, any smells out and about set me off, seeing nice things in the cupboard and fridge make me want to eat them straight away and not leave anything. Always planning the next thing. It just brings so much pleasure and happy hormones
I'm slim but I'm a binge eater so have had a few short times in life where I've been big. At those times I've eaten what I want when I want. Basically I'm eating all day on at least snacks and always thinking about it

SilenceInside · 14/09/2024 11:00

@CharlotteLightandDark you're not overweight and not obese, so why would you even think about whether or not you'd take weight loss injections? You don't need them and wouldn't get them legitimately prescribed.

"Food noise" is constant mental self-talk about food, negative and intrusive, nothing to do with your gut,

CharlotteLightandDark · 14/09/2024 11:31

I’m not obese but my bmi is 25 ish so I reckon I could get them privately if I wanted to.

much skinnier people than me have done

No you couldn't. Not legitimately as I said. No one would prescribe them to you, unless you lie about your height or weight and submit someone else's photos and ID, or buy from an unregulated illegal dealer.

User19876536484 · 14/09/2024 12:37

Because I only want to lose a stone and I’m not overweight at the moment.

I’ll do it naturally.

Well it hasn't been around long enough for those threads to exist. There is a thread for graduates, of which I am one. No issues so far, time will tell.
I'd rather be a healthy weight and fighting to maintain than obese and trying, but failing, to lose, as I was for many years.

I was going to say that. There’s no evidence that people on weight loss injections will put weight back on any more than people who have lost weight in other ways.

these injections are a tool to help you lose weight. Whether you exercise and what you choose to eat on them is up to you. But it’s a lot easier to make healthy choices

InOut2023 · 10/09/2024 07:38

Because exercising is free and good for mental health.

Exercising doesn’t help you lose weight and people who are obese (who are the only ones eligible for this drug) are limited in the exercise they can do. I can now exercise daily thanks to Mounjaro

Not from a legitimate provider, and why would you want to risk it from anywhere else.

You see, this is why this drug is dangerous. People think it’s a shot in the arm, no harm done. It’s not risk free. It’s like the Covid jab. Some people need to lose weight because being obese is really bad for them. They can’t exercise, and it has a bad effect on overall health. The risk of the injections is less than the risk of obesity. The covid jab made a lot of people ill, but overall saved lives. There’s a risk with it, that’s why they don’t give it to healthy, young people.

Then we have people with no weight related issues, a healthy BMI, and they want to take these slimming drugs.

No drug is risk feee and quite frankly if you need to lose some weight, the injections should be a last resort.

I work in pharmacy and have to turn away desperate diabetics who are (sometimes, more frequently lately) desperate for their insulin because it’s out of stock with our suppliers. Diabetics need priority for these drugs but it’s not happening.

The weight loss injections are not insulin, and if you work in a pharmacy surely you should know that. A shortage of insulin is absolutely nothing at all to do with weight loss injections being privately prescribed.

Hoplolly · 16/09/2024 09:46

Who is using insulin for weight loss 😆

Any shortages of medicines is not because of private demand, it's NHS funding. If the drugs are available privately, they're also available to the NHS...

Can you tell me which pharmacy you work in? Need to know so I never go there for medical advice or medication. Cheers.
