Best booze on an all inclusive holiday

Any tips on this? I'm about halfway through a roughly 1-2 stone weight loss and looking to pause the loss, or maybe put on a couple of pounds, rather than pile it all back on again.

I was thinking about some rules, e.g.

(1) No bread or pastries for breakfast - maybe no bread at all;
(2) No cakes, desserts, etc at all;
(3) Go easy on the chips;
(4) Fill up on veg/leaner meat whenever possible; and
(5) No booze before 8pm.

Booze is the tricky one. At home I'm down to very little, about one drink per week on average, but realistically on holiday I'll have something every day. What's the best thing to drink?

I'd probably go for tall drinks like vodka , lime and soda or a dry white wine spritzer with soda water.

Littletreefrog · 09/08/2024 22:18

Spirits mixed with sugar free pop.

Vodka soda, slice of lime. It's a very boring drink though!

I think it may depend on where you’re going and how hot it is. You probably don’t have to drink every day. When it’s really hot, I actually tamp down my alcoholic drinks because I don’t feel refreshed or hydrated enough.

I tend to go more for refreshers like cucumber juice, ginger juice, lime, mint, and seltzer. Someone mentioned to me recently that’s pretty much a virgin Moscow mule and I didn’t even realize it! 😂 I’m sure there are some non alcoholic (and lower sugar) options at the hotels.

I just saw blueberry basil lemonade on a menu today. Ask about seasonal lemonades or low/no sugar fruit iced teas like hibiscus, peach iced tea, etc. Be willing to ask and they’d likely be willing to concoct something for you.

Champagne

When I was away it was very very hot (in the 40’s). Drinking actually wasn’t that enjoyable. I would feel very sleepy, which kind of ruined the vibe of being out having fun. I had the odd cold beer and an aperol spritz one night. The rest of the time I just enjoyed drinking cold non alcoholic drinks.

Also I was more about the food. You can drink anywhere and it’s all the same wherever you go, but you can’t always eat gorgeous local delicacies. Vodka is always just vodka. (Chips are also chips no matter what country). No I didn’t eat pastries either I ate locally grown fruit, local/traditional meats and a lot of fish. I really enjoyed breakfast as it was fruit, yoghurt, cheese, meat and they had a lot of veggies out too so it set my day off really nicely. I think perhaps alcohol for me has finally lost most of its appeal, you kind of can’t beat a cold beer/shandy on a boiling hot day but just the one and it makes me want to fall asleep if I drink after a hot day!

Champagne. Premier Brut/Rose. Lowest calories.

DelilahBucket · 10/08/2024 07:51

Vodka and soda with fresh lime is my "diet" drink. I don't find it boring, it's very refreshing.

Calories in booze come from alcohol, it’s so calorific you can fuel your car with it. I would stick to one drink a night and some low in alcohol options - white wine spritzer?

No it doesn't.

Most calories in booze come from sugar, be that added to the product like wine, or in the mixers like cocktails.

Vodka with diet mixers/soda is the best.

FetchAPail · 11/08/2024 09:11

Plus low alcohol drinks are often much higher in calories than a vodka lime and soda

turkeyboots · 11/08/2024 09:17

I love a salad that I don't have to prepare myself, so go heavy on the veg at mealtimes, avoid bread and pastries as much as you can, and save some calories for a few nice drinks with dinner.

openforall · 11/08/2024 09:27

Don't inflict rules but try to enjoy yourself in moderation

CortieTat · 11/08/2024 09:32

@FetchAPail
1 gram of alcohol contains 7 calories, the only more calorific substance out there is fat at 9 per gram. HTH.

Drinks like wine are normally very low in sugar, unless you drink dessert wines like Tokay or Muscat.

Cava Brut is the cheaper alternative.
