Not sure if I'm posting in the right topic but I want to get tested for AD-36 (adenovirus 36). This is a virus that is thought to lead to significant weight gain in those that have had it (or most of those that have had it, I'm not a scientist and don't know that much about it yet). I emailed the man who's done a lot of work on this virus (Dr Nikil Dhurandhar in the states) but got no reply. I then found out you can buy a test kit from this website but it says on it that the product is for research purposes only. Can anyone advise on a way that I could somehoe get someone to do this test for me? I've lived for decades gaining weight rapidly if I go anywhere near 1000 calories a day. No amount of exercise has any impact at all. It's miserable and I just want to know why. Can anyone advise?

As far as I could tell when I looked there isn’t a treatment cure so I am not sure what the point would be having a test? What would this achieve? I also don’t think it is a long lasting disease so might not be in your system even if you had it, you might be post viral now. As your doctor for tests to see if your immune system is healthy. If you have high inflammation markers then they might be able to treat that, or an immune system issue can be picked up. If you have otherwise normal bloods and no other symptoms apart from obesity - do you have any of the other symptoms then it’s likely that you might need other interventions to help you with your weight.

I have never heard of someone gaining weight on 1000 calories a day, all of the studies I’ve ever read on calories in vs calories out (and exercise) show that although people have different metabolic rates, it’s not scientifically possible to gain weight if you eat a very restricted calorie intake and it’s not recommended. I’m prepared to be wrong and in that fact, someone needs to study you because you would be pretty unusual. How much do you eat a day, less than 1000? Every single day for years?

Yes, I've been eating about 700 calories a day every day for 30 years with only a few periods where I tried to eat more but gained a ton of weight. I did 10 days on 1000 calories a day a couple of years ago for example and gained around half a stone in that time. There are actually plenty of documented cases of people who gain weight on such a small intake as there are various conditions that cause this. I don't have anything that shows up on tests but there's something called Metabolic Damage that they think can cause this but that doesn't show up on tests. I believe I may have had this virus too though - from what I understand there will be evidence that you've had it many years after infection if it's ever been in your system. It's not about finding a cure. Just having an explanation for something that's pretty much ruined my life would be like winning the lottery at this stage.
