Weight/strength training question

Hi all

Hoping there's a PT on here that can give me some advice please.

I love strength training but I'm trying to workout what is better for weight loss/toning up.

Are you better off doing high reps, low weight or low reps, high weight. Or does it work better mixing it up each session?

For example, if I plan to do barbell squats should I do 3 x 10 reps holding 60kg or should I do 10 reps holding 60kg, 8 reps holding 70kg and 6 reps holding 80kg. Or do I do one week of the former and one week of the latter?

I am not a PT will say from the start!
however my understanding is that for muscle growth you would do lots of reps and for strength you would do more weight less reps. Toning is muscle growth really as it fills out the area, you need to extend the muscle slowly and reach the full range of movement with lots of reps, not just be lifting a very heavy weight because at a high weight you can lose your good form and then you don’t get the best result from the muscle in terms of growth. That’s my understanding

I’ve had good success doing lower weights, more reps and less chance of injury too. So that’s always what I choose. Once I can do all the reps with a full range of motion and not even feel like I am struggling to failure point I will go to a higher weight (or more reps but usually more weight) and repeat the whole thing that way.
