Unhappy with weight unhappy with dieting

I'm so unhappy with my weight at the moment, nothing fits me and everything looks rubbish. It gets me really down but as I'm only 5'0 to lose weight I have to eat 1000-1200 calories which is miserable as I have a massive sweet tooth. I don't know which is worse! I feel like I'm constantly dieting, constantly failing and then feeling guilty and I'm just in this vicious cycle I can't get out of. I've just started exercising and strength training but if I can't control my diet then what's the point

Allow yourself to have something sweet, to stop those cravings. A diet doesn't have to be completely restrictive. Track your calories and allow yourself the "treats".

LadyCrumpet · 09/07/2024 20:28

I read yesterday that something salty or sour takes away the want for something sweet.

Mollyplop999 · 09/07/2024 20:36

I feel exactly the same so following with interest.

I was going to say the exact opposite! The less sweet stuff you eat, the less you want, honest (after the first week anyway). I’d avoid calorie counting and anything that feels like “a diet” and instead just stop buying sweet things full stop.

This is literally me. The amount of calories needed is insanely low for us 5 footers. Utterly miserable 😢

Get yourself a copy of Why We Eat (Too Much) by Dr Andrew Jenkinson.

He explains (very clearly, but with evidence) why classic dieting (aka calorie counting) doesn't work.

Get your sweet fix from melon , strawberries, blueberries, raspberries

Detox off the crap sugar like sweets and cake

Have you put all your details in to something like nutracheck? I am 5ft and would get around 1300-1400 to eat to loose around 1-2 a week. Sometimes i loose a little more. It's also very important to up your protein to keep you full.

I'm same height as you and currently dieting so I feel your pain! I have to go cold turkey with the sweet stuff I can't just do a wee bit so I find it easier to just cut it out completely then after a while I don't get the cravings anymore. Currently subbing the chocolate for fruit and pretending it's just the same lol

CandiedPrincess · 09/07/2024 20:52

I feel your pain. I have to be under 1200 calories to lose weight, 1700 is my maintenance.

Not everyone agrees but I also found going cold turkey on the sugar was better and more successful than continuing to try to eat it in smaller amounts. I now find sweet things a bit overwhelming and I’m more likely to choose something salty.

I think people try to do too much at once. It’s ok to just do one new thing a week, like walk more. You don’t have to wake up like it’s 1st Jan and change everything, this is why it becomes too hard and you give up.

If you crave sugar there is research that magnesium and calcium supplements can help as it could be a deficiency.

I’ve also found it helpful to have only 2 days of the low cal diet in a variation of the 5:2 diet - I eat 1000 calories only 2 days then I can eat 1400-1500 the other 5 days and this is not as difficult to stick to
