Advice please, 2nd gym instructor has contradicted what 1st one told me to do!

i had a personal programme drawn up for me at the gym by a really nice instructor, the programme involved cardio and then weights.
I went and did this today - but then another instructor told me that it would be better to do cardio on one visit to the gym and then weights the next time, and so on. That way i wouldn't be tired when doing the weights.

I'm confused now - i thought the first way was ok! The second way would be quicker - but just as effective? ?? does anyone have any idea, please?

I cant help really but I have noticed every time I go to the gym that different instructors have so many different ideas on what exercises you should do

I would go with the one you like the best

no I would personally go with the easiest but I am a lazy fecker

Just to confuse you further, there is a theory that doing cardio after weights will help disperse the lactic acid build-up in your muscles, but I wouldn't think it makes much difference whether you combine your workouts or do them seperately-- stick to whatever works best for you. Though a little cardio before the weights is probably a good idea to warm up.

i would love the idea of just doing the cardio bit / weights bit every other session, because it would half the time i'm down the blardy gym!! however i have a sneaking suspicion the longer version is better.

yes those pesky gym instruct0ors - always moving the goalposts grrrrrrr

i think it depends how many times a week you plan to go to the gym and how intense your workout... plus your goals.

planning to go 3-4 times a week and my goal is weight loss esp. round the tummy area!

if you are going for 45-60 minutes then i would do 2 cardio based sessions and 1 weights session per week on alternate visits. Plus then a body balance or yoga type class.

cardio based
45 minutes cardio plus 10 minutes weights (just some lunges, arm weights, sit ups) stretch.

weights based
15-20 minutes cardio to warm up, then 30 minutes weights (get your heart rate up too) stretch.

i found i only lost weight when i do cardio for 40 minutes plus. Weights are good to build muscle/tone and raise your metabolism but it's the long cardio sessions that really burn the fat.

You could subsitute a weights session for a body pump class, or a cardio session for a RPM or more aerobic type class.

Good luck!!
