Hi, apologies as I'm sure this has been done a thousand times but I can't work out which is better? Which gets better results? Also, the cost of the injections is hard to understand without going all the way through the process to order and sign up, please can someone give me a rough guide. Sorry if I'm being dense and if anyone can point me in the right direction to answer these questions I'd appreciate it too. Smile

These are medicines, that can only be provided on prescription. Mumsnet is not the place to answer your questions - please get advice from a qualified trained healthcare professional who knows your medical history.

The price increases as the dosage does, from what I've seen it's by £20-£30 as you progress

dandeliondaisy · 27/05/2024 12:04

@sorrynotathome believe it or not I have been back to my doctors twice with these questions but they are not interested and do not pass comment due to the medicines not being prescribed through them despite my weight being nearly 19 stone!

You can get a private prescription very easily

I believe most providers will offer you a choice depending on how you answer their questionnaire. I was offered both but went with Mounjaro. Mounjaro is apparently more effective but it really depends on how you manage on a day to day with your diet and exercise. what really differs with the providers is the starting price. The price increases as you move up your doses I believe. You’ll need to submit a photo aswell and id. It took them about 3 days to approve everything as I did it over bank holiday. Remember you can cancel a provider and switch to another.

I’m on my 3rd week of mounjaro and my results so far are slow. My food noise reduced significantly Straight away which helps to make more conscious choices for my meals and my side effects so far are fatigue and dry mouth.

dandeliondaisy · 27/05/2024 14:28

Hi @lettyrose thanks for your reply. I didn't realise they differ in cost as the dosage increases. Which is more expensive? I worry about the cancer risk associated with them and it has put me off massively but I'm at desperation point now...

In studies, Mounjaro has been found to be more effective for weight loss than Wegovy. This is quite a good summary. The link to thyroid cancer was first suggested ten years ago but the EU have stated there’s no clear causative link. It’s a very specific type of thyroid tumour it’s been linked to and, if I had any family history of it, I wouldn’t take Mounjaro. I take Mounjaro and have balanced the risks against my own health risks due to obesity. It’s a very personal decision. As for price, there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference between the two. Starter dose of 2.5mg Mounjaro is currently £125 from Bolt pharmacy, I think that’s the cheapest I’ve seen it.

No Proven Link Between Weight Loss Drugs And Thyroid Cancer, EU Says

All U.S. labels for Wegovy and Ozempic—diabetes drugs sometimes used to lose weight—warn use could cause thyroid cancer.

Thank you @EsotericMnemonic that's very helpful. It isn't clear whether ozempic and Mounjaro have both been proven not to cause cancers? They work differently so I wonder if there's one less likely to cause than the other?

ill be honest I didn’t look at the risks of it. I too had reached a low point and I didn’t want a quick fix I wanted something that would make me healthier. And bariatric surgery was not an option for me I’m too scared of that route. My sweet tooth is awful and I snack too much. I was considering getting one of those private health MOTs prior to starting but I’ll likely do one later down line of this Mounjaro journey.

EsotericMnemonic · 27/05/2024 16:35

@dandeliondaisy it seems to be the GLP-1 receptor agonist that is linked, which both Wegovy and Mounjaro contain. From what I can see, it is only animal studies showing a link. To confuse it further, most studies have been conducted on patients with diabetes, as that’s who the drugs were originally intended before. I can see, for example, how raised risks of pancreatitis could be feasible in diabetics but not non-diabetics.

I’ve put this on other threads but in case it helps anyone here my GP put me on Victoza last summer which was permanently out of stock so I didn’t even get started.
I went to see him about something completely unrelated a couple of weeks ago and he offered mounjaro.
I’m one and a half weeks in and so far it’s curbed my appetite significantly but I’ve not seen much movement on the scales, maybe a couple of lbs. I’ve not noticed much in the way of side effects - bit of bloating and constipation, and perhaps a bit more tiredness.
I’m diabetic and obese for the record, used to be hungry all the time and had a sweet tooth. For once I’m not thinking about food all the time or craving chocolate and cakes.
There’s no way I could afford to pay for it privately.

My starting weight was similar to yours and I chose to use mounjaro as I have pcos & found that everything I read said Mounjaro (MJ) would be better for me.

I spoke to my gp about my medical issues & weight & all they could offer me was a slimming world membership- as if I haven't already tried that. I also go to the gym 3 times a week but struggle to lose weight.

I've been on MJ for 6 weeks & I've lost 1 1/2 stone in that time. I'm now on 5mg & will soon be ordering my next 7.5mg pen. I chose to go through boots as its a name I trust & they provide additional support too.

So far I'd say its been life changing for me & I'm incredibly happy I chose to go down this route. It's completely switched off any hunger I have so I am now able to consciously chose to eat whats good for me. I do wonder if some naturally slim people are like this - its blowing my mind.

Side effects have been minimal for me (occasional headaches & sickness) but nothing too difficult to manage & not constant either.

For me, my weight staying that high massively increases my chance of cancer etc so I'm happy to take the side effects/risks to reduce the overall liklihood of disease by reducing my weight.

Good luck

Wow @Iwant2beJessicaFletcher incredible! Well done. You must feel fantastic! Thanks for your advice. I will definitely look at Boots as like you I'd like to go with a trusted pharmacy.
