Malnutrition post weight loss surgery

Hi All

Can anyone offer advice? I had weight loss surgery almost 2 years ago.

Since then, the hair loss is epic, its still falling out in clumps. I've also recently noticed I am getting every head cold/ear ache possible. I never used to get sick before!

What can I do? I take a 50 plus multivitamin. I'm so sick of getting a cold every other month.

Does anyone have any remedies/advice/suggestions to boost my immunity?

Or any advice how to navigate the malnutrition? I'm pretty certain malnutrition is an issue, as I notice that as soon as I eat anything I have to poop (and it's diarrhea like sorry TMI).

Help - I am really struggling with my health. I almost wish I stayed fat, rather than deal with all these issues

Have you had your levels checked with a blood test? You may need extra strength iron, B12 and Vit D that you can't get in a multi.

Also the oral sprays can often work better than tablets for people with absorption issues.

What kind of surgery was it? How much protein are you eating each day?
I would go to the doctor for a blood test

What are you eating before you need to poo? Sounds like dumping syndrome. Is it sugary or fatty. Are you eating too quickly?
I'm guessing bypass?

Actually no I haven't. Thanks for the advice

Gastric Sleeve. I have a protein shake daily, but not 100% sure exactly how much protein I'm consuming

It can be anything! I've only noticed it probably in the last 4 weeks or so.

It can be cereal. Or eggs. Or toast. Or coffee. Or dinner. Or lunch. I don't think I'm eating too quickly. I have heard of dumping syndrome, but don't think this is it - 2 years down the line..... idk, maybe it is

Thanks everyone. Sounds like a blood test is in order.

This has all started happening recently, which is why its freaking me out a bit.

I'm so sick of catching every bug around

Op, what fruit & veg do you eat? The more you eat and the greater variety, the more robust your immune system should be.

I eat a pretty varied diet - I love my fruit and veg!

This feels like a new thing and I am at a loss as to why I'm suddenly catching every bloody cold going around!

Cereal is usually junk. Eggs are a common trigger for dumping post surgery - were for me for a few years and five years on still occasionally go right through me. Bread is notoriously difficult to eat post surgery. Coffee gives everyone the shits!

I would keep a food diary and try lots of foods and call the organisation you went through with the surgery and have a chat.

Two years on I still felt the surgery was new. I was definitely still counting my protein, religiously taking vitamins etc.

I ate lots of cod and other fish, some steak and chicken, tuna etc. eggs when I could - slowly! Always with lots of salad and veg.
My hair fell out too but came back.

Maybe you're just under the weather. It happens. Hope you feel better soon

Did you not have any dietitian follow up post surgery?

Nutrition after gastric sleeve is complicated and you can have all sorts of micro nutrient deficiencies.

A multi vitamin a day is not going to be enough.
