Ozempic or Mounjaro

Had symptoms of abdominal pain on mounjaro after taking it for one week, blood tests came all clear.

doctor (outside of UK) is suggesting I switch to ozempic. I’ve heard weight loss is more on mounjaro and less side effects.

has anyone made this switch?

I switched the other way from ozempic to mounjaro. Tbh the side effects tend to wear off once your body gets used to it, so by the 3rd jab you will likely be fine? I didn’t have stomach ache, but used to get really bad diarrhoea about 48hrs after the jab, so had to take it on a Friday as I knew I would be at home on a Sunday. That settled down after a few months too. Do need to remember to drink lots of water and make sure you get some fibre (eg snack on fruit). Did 9months on ozempic/wegovy and last 3m on MJ - lost 4st without really trying and am no longer obese. Not sure that helps you much, though!

Don't know where else to post.
My daughter has just had her 4th injection.. First one she felt great and energised.
She's had no physical side effects but mentally she's been crying a lot and feeling really low and anxious.
Has anyone else had this and did it get better
Her weight loss is coming along nicely.. she was 20 stone and lost a stone already.

peebles32 · 20/05/2024 21:04

Started mounjaro on Friday and zero side effects.

confusedtemperature · 20/05/2024 21:05

Thank you all

@BusyMummy001 did you have more weight loss on mounjaro or ozempic? And any different side effects on the ozempic

So I’m thinking this could be a) because she isn’t eating enough and her sugar levels and or nutrient levels are too low? She might need to make sure she is eating more (nutrient rich fruit and veg), taking a vitamin supplement and electrolytes as these will likely be low if she has lost that much in only a month.

Or b) could she have been self medicating with food/wine, dealing with depression/stress, and now that her crutch has been taken away, she’d finding it hard to distract herself from her underlying MH issues? Would it be worth self-referring for counselling? (There is often a link online to local counselling under the NHS, eg Surrey Mind Works where I live.) Weight loss is fine in and of itself, but if there are underlying emotional and psychological reasons for the weight gain, they need to be addressed along the way as it will all go back on when the medication stops.

Also worth contacting the prescriber to discuss too.

Not sure if this helps?

@BusyMummy001
She doesn't drink.
She has PCOS and EDS and Type 2 diabetes... Yes she does have anxiety and depression and is on prozac and has therapy already.
That is/ was under control.
But these crying episodes have just come on since starting mounjaro.
She takes vitamins.
Magnesium
Vit D.
B12
Anyhow she's going to try more fruit for snacking.
GP gave her diazepam to take when ever she needs to ...until things start to settle down.
So hopefully her diabetes will be under control with added bonus of weight loss.
( I'm going to be prescribed it for my diabetes too and my BMI )

Had a google and although MJ seems to help with depression, one of the very rare side effects is acute depression and feeling suicidal. Given your DD has pre-existing depression/anxiety I think it’s reasonable to consider MJ MAY, in her case, be making it worse.

TBH I would contact your daughter’s GP tomorrow and discuss whether she might be better on Ozempic or Wegovy? Even if they are not prescribing it, they will be able to advise.

I have PCOS and an under-active thyroid (plus was pre-diabetic) and did Ozempic followed by wegovy and lost 3st over 9m. It would have been higher but the shortage meant I was stuck on a very low dose for 4m so my weight stuck. I started MJ 5 weeks ago and am another stone down and no longer obese. I can recommend any of them as they all work, albeit with different side effects (I’ve only had very mild, temporary ones) so I would explore your DD changing medication.

What happens when you reach your target weight? Do you come off MJ or do you need to stay on it? I've 4st to lose and would love to try it but worried about having to be on it forever!

curious79 · 28/05/2024 08:13

Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy - with all you need to use your time on them to massively change habits otherwise the research already shows people pack the weight back on

Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy - with all you need to use your time on them to massively change habits otherwise the research already shows people pack the weight back on

The research shows that only 17% of people using injectables regain all the weight lost, compared to 80-90% of those following a traditional diet (WW, SW etc), who usually regain it within 2 years. Both methods require lifestyle and diet habit changes, as the basic rules of eat less/move more are necessary regardless.

User364837 · 28/05/2024 09:07

I doubt they’ve been in widespread use long enough to really gather good data on what happens to people’s weight long term

BusyMummy001 · 28/05/2024 09:50

The study I quoted looked at 22,200+ participants over a three year period, and compared those subjects to stats looking at the 100’s of thousands of traditional dieters and their weight-loss trends over the same two year post-diet period. It’s been around since 2012, so there is more than 10 years data and the sample size was huge, so I’d say it was pretty reliable.

Longer term, over 5-10years say, it may be seen that Ozempic/MJ dieters put more back on on over that period… but if 80-90% of traditional dieters are putting all the weight they’ve lost within 2 years, it still supports the use of these medications, doesn’t it? Especially with recent additional studies demonstrating the additional benefits for inflammatory illness, kidney function, heart disease indices which diet alone does not impact?

Fizzysister · 31/05/2024 10:13

I'm seriously thinking about Mounjaro. Does it reduce your appetite for wine? That would be no bad thing for me!

BusyMummy001 · 31/05/2024 12:56

@Fizzysister yes, it reduces your interest in wine - something to do with the fact that it makes insulin production more efficient, means that you don’t crave sweet stuff (and yes, that includes wine) but it also changes your taste buds. I’ve been through 5 years of unmitigated, devastating stress and anxiety, with suicidal teen and two close bereavements. My drinking increased during lockdown and continued in response. When I started this I was on 5-7bottles of wine a week and a 1L bottle of rum. Yep, 80-100 units a week. No idea why my lover function tests are okay or how I functioned really. Now, I have the odd glass of prosecco if out at the theatre or in the garden on a glorious day. Barely 7-10 units a week now. Cannot remember what it was like to be watching the clock for 6pm to come and wine o’clock to officially commence. Have poured away bottles of, apparently, perfectly good wine because it tasted like vinegar to me (DH doesn’t drink white wine). Honestly, it’s been the best side effect ever.

Fizzysister · 31/05/2024 13:04

@BusyMummy001 thank you for replying, that will swing it for me I think. I had a very stressful time a few years ago that drinking 'helped' with and although the stress has now gone, I'm still drinking too much. WFH for 8 years, I use it to switch gears after work, and so find myself drinking most evenings and every weekend. It definitely sounds worth a try for me!

Honestly, it was unexpected for me. I knew I was self medicating with alcohol (I’d never describe myself as ‘alcoholic’ but I am sure others would, so I may just have been in denial) and that I’d never get my eating and weight under control unless I broke the habit (all those calories). I think now I understand that there is a definitely link between insulin/hormones and my response to alcohol as well as food, so am deeply grateful for the fact it has broken that cycle. My relationship with both is much healthier now.

I had a lot of stomach problems on ozempic. None on mounjaro and I’m on 12.5

I had a massive uptick in anxiety shortly after starting Wegovy. It has moderated with time, but I think is still higher than I was pre medication. On the flip side, I have lost 4+ stone and have seen massive improvement in physical health metrics. For me it has been worth the elevated anxiety, but wouldn’t want to minimise the negative effects.
