Wegovy on NHS

Anyone been successful in having wegovy prescribed on the NHS?

Two weeks ago I spoke to the GP about my struggles with Weightloss. I’m 44, BMI of 40.4, 110kgs, high BP, fatty liver diseases confirmed by ultrasound last year. Fractured knee/meniscus tear that stops me exercising.

A week ago I started wegovy privately. I’ve lost 7.5lbs in my first week.

GP referred me to local tier 3 weight services. A letter arrived yesterday with details of clinic and to wait for an appointment.

I’ve just had a call from the GPs saying the WM service have come back to them saying they won’t prescribe any weight loss injections and did I still want to be referred. When I asked why they wouldn’t prescribe she said they aren’t commissioned to do so. I think this is against the NICE guidelines…..

Anyone with any experience out there?

It’s up to each service what they are commissioned to do as even though it might be ‘approved for use’, the weight management service might not be commissioned to provide it i.e. not specialist enough or that you need to complete XYZ first.

You can contact your commissioner to find out more information if you Google your area + integrated care board.

A lot of people on these forums are waiting very long times to get approved under T3 so perhaps this means you aren’t automatically eligibly approved from the start - you have to do the work with them in their programme to become eligible to be approved. I would go to the appt and find out more info

Someone on one of the mounjaro/wegovy threads mentioned they'd been prescribed wegovy on the NHS. I don't know the exact details, but they also said they'd been waiting several years (not sure if specifically for wegovy or just been a patient with the clinic that long).

I've been under the weight management services for 20 months and apparently they have just recently got/or are about to get, approval for wegovy for certain people that fit certain criteria. But is a very long drawn out process. So I'm still waiting and so is everybody else.

Research shoes that petite lose weight on these injections but when they stop they regain 2/3 of the weight within a year. So from what I gather they are much more effective when combined with bariatric surgery after weight loss has gained, but before the injections are stopped/weight regained.

If you can afford to pay privately then just stick with that?
